India ban on Chinese telecom manufacturers exposed

Right so i suoppose that is why ZTE and Huawei HSDPA modems are being sold to carriers around the world including carriers in the UK, USA, EU and Canada?

Get real, this is not about quality but protectionism... And if India feels that such measures serves it's sectors well and benifits its economy... Then okay, but don't go blaming the ban on "Chinese tech being sub-standard" because that sir is a lie.

It is about protectionism, and it is about quality.

The phones which are banned were absolute junk. The retailers themselves warned that they will not do anything, even if you bought it just an hour ago.

Those phones were loaded with very attractive features and a very low price. Uneducated consumers thought of it as a good alternative to actual phones when they could not afford expensive branded phones. Really, they were junk..I'm speaking of the ones sold in India. :-)

the real issue is being missed out completely, Chinese have been known to bug their products no matter if it is just a USB and it has been proven again and again,
India considers this the real reason for the ban india is trying not to jump into the so called sino usa conflict which usa trying very hard to do.

its better if india stick's to its policies and develops its economy "evenly" !!!

that is a good news, now, it's time for huawei and zte to retreat from indian market

India ban on Chinese telecom manufacturers exposed - People's Daily Online July 08, 2010

Although India has been insisting it has never issued an import ban on telecommunications equipment from particular countries, the local media recently released a "blacklist" has long existed within the Indian government, much to India's embarrassment.

India's Economic Times reported on July 2 that the Indian government made a list of banned telecommunications equipment providers, citing the impending release of new security regulations. Twenty-five Chinese companies and an Israeli company are on the list.

This ban will directly affect the orders of Chinese communications equipment manufacturers like ZTE and Huawei. Data show that in 2009, India contributed 10.10 percent of ZTE's global income, while India is Huawei‘s most important overseas market in the Asia-Pacific region. In last fiscal year, India contributed about 1.4 billion U.S. dollars to Huawei's global revenue, more than doubling the previous year.

In fact, the news of the Indian government ban on Chinese equipment manufacturers appeared long ago. The turmoil began in late 2009, but the message was always complicated and confusing. ZTE, Huawei and other Chinese equipment manufacturers have not been officially notified by the Indian government. But attitude of these Chinese enterprises is very clear: they hope to participate in the construction of the Indian telecom market and are willing to actively cooperate with the security review and even provide the core code for review.

According to industry sources, as an emerging telecommunications market with 3G license issuance and a network undergoing upgrades, the network construction of the Indian telecom market will enter a new round of expansion. In such a crucial time, a blacklist against China's equipment manufacturers would seriously affect their revenues and profits.

Well security is the most convenient excuse to hide behind. You don't have to explain the specific vulnerability the nation is or maybe facing.

Really thats the first I heard of, are there any articles to support the bugging of the products?

In the world of manufacturing its not always about the manufactures quality but the countries infrastructure to support the industry.

Once a batch of Nokia phones manufactured in India were left out in the rain due to lack of storage and transportation in the port for a month. In the end Nokia had to write off the whole shipment.

How is it protectionism when India does not have Indian companies competing in this area. This just looks like instead of importing from China,India is comfortable importing from the West probably paying more.Maybe they do have legitimate security concerns..otherwise it would be insane to pay more for the same thing.

@topic

Chinese are crying so much about the ban on their telecom manufacturers without looking into justifiable security concerns. The ban was imposed for the below reasons

1. Phones manufactured were without proper IMEI making them untraceable by ATS in case of terrorist activities.

2. Spyware and malware embedded in the telecom equipment could expose Indian telecom networks to intelligence agencies across the border. Chinese hackers exploited such vulnerability and hacked into Indian computer networks recently.

India is justified in looking into its security concern after all China itself is involved in a tussle with Europe and the United States over Beijing's attempts to force foreign suppliers of computer security technology to reveal the inner workings of computer encryption and other security products to conduct business in China.

More over its not only India which has Trade restrictions on Chinese products. Care to enlighten me, why there has been trade restrictions on Agro product imports from India? India has been asking China for removal of these restrictions for past 10 years now but no effect. We have told our concerns for the restrictions what are China's concerns about Agro-product imports from India? Now isn't that a protectionist measure? :azn:

The Trouble With India

Btw I'm not questioning India's ability to manufacture quality goods but its lack of infrastructure to support the industry

Polish up your manners before questioning others a simple "please provide a link would suffice". Its this kind of superior attitude that alienates India from its neighbors.

For the people who say China manufacture junk .I just want to ask how much you paid .every one all know low price low quality. China not only just product poor quality but also high quality it base which you want to buy ,how much you want to pay .they do OEM for famous brand ,produce high quality.so don't just say junk just look the purse.HUAWEI is a good company the quality you can test .and it also offer mang jobs for indian .is it a junk can launch SHENZHOU
areoboat,is it a junk built for the fastest speed railway.there is no need to argue it . as the global develop world become a little village.
For India and China all can manufacture high qualitly just depend the price.
