In a humanitarian measure, India has agreed to facilitate American officials who wish to visit Arunachal Pradesh in search of the remains of American pilots killed during the Second World War.
"The U.S. government has in 2006 onwards made this request. They have sent teams there and at that stage, they did not find anything. They have since then raised this issue again. This is a humanitarian issue and we have agreed to deal with it in a humanitarian measure. This is being done not only in India," said External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin.
"These are remains of World War II pilots who may have lost their lives there. This is their perception and we welcome this and we are willing to assist them in any way," he added.
In the past too, American officials had attempted to recover the remains of its war heroes from various sites in the northeastern Indian state, but without success.
More than 500 US warplanes were believed to have gone missing while flying in the hilly and remote frontier areas of China, India and Burma during the Second World War.
According to an estimate, at least 400 US warplanes went missing in Arunachal Pradesh alone. Certain analysts believe the remains of the pilots may have been frozen in the glaciers in the region over the years.
Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna talked about India's participation as an observer country in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting.
Krishna said that India's track record as an observer country was well known and respected by other participating nations.
"We have made known our seriousness in our association with this very important grouping and India's track record, when we discussed this with reference to other groupings, is well known and as a result of that, I think, but from my position of evolving the consensus, I think we have moved in a more positive direction of finalizing the modalities, the terms and conditions under which new members could be entertained and we are looking forward to that," said Krishna.
Talking about the two Indian traders involved in a financial dispute with Chinese businessmen in China's Yiwu city, Krishna said that he would take up the matter with his counterpart on Thursday.
"Well, I had a good meeting with traders, the two traders and they conveyed the position as they see it and then I did tell them that tomorrow I am going to be meeting the distinguished foreign ministers and I will certainly take up this issue with him," said Krishna. By Mrityunjay Singh (ANI)
