NEW DELHI -- Ahead of the visit of Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who will be the Chief Guest at the Republic Day parade here, India and UAE will hold their first strategic dialogue tomorrow to discuss cooperation in key areas including energy, trade and security.

Announcing Al Nahyan's visit between January 24-26, External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Vikas Swarup today said the dignitary would call on the President and the Vice-President as well as hold discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on "bilateral, regional and global issues of common interest".

The Strategic Dialogue, being held for the first time since the two sides have agreed to elevate the mutually beneficial relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership after Modi's visit there in 2015, will be co- chaired by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs M J Akbar and his Saudi counterpart Anwar Mohammed Gargash.

According to officials, the Strategic Cooperation Agreement is expected to be finalised during tomorrow's meeting and is likely to be signed after the meeting between Modi and Al Nahyan, who is also Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of UAE.

This is the second visit of the Crown Prince to India who travelled here in February 2016. He will be accompanied by a high-level delegation, including Ministers, senior officials and captains of industry.

During the visit, the two sides will explore ways to strengthen ties in key areas of energy and trade.

The two countries have been among each other's top trading partners with a well-balanced bilateral trade of about USD 50 billion in 2015-16.

"UAE is among the top investors in India in terms of foreign direct investments. It contributes significantly to India's energy security and is the fifth largest supplier of crude oil to India in 2015-16," Swarup said.

Noting that there was about 2.6 million strong and vibrant Indian community forms the largest expatriate group in UAE, he said, "Their positive and well-appreciated contribution in the development of their host country has been an important anchor of our excellent bilateral engagement."

Is this what Chinese are teaching you after Americans?

It's common sense. Our brothers will pacify you as you will again come see the benefits of and from Islam and we will be welcomed as heroes once Hindutva runs its course.

Pakistan becoming an economic corridor is a cause of concern for many countries, some of those which do not want to get stabilized economically and few seeing it as an economic set back for their own economy. The project started way back in early 2000. Gwadar port developed before end 2008. That was phase I of the project. This means neither PPP nor PMLN government are the ones initiating it. Yes one of them is responsible in slowing down the process. Phase II started getting delayed, until one of the major players decided to seek PA support which was extended in last COAS time and Phase II started fully speed. If God willing it should be complete by 2018.

UAE's interest in India is because of its dependence on Indian human resource, which is relatively cheaper against Pakistani power. This competitive edge allowed many Indian investors to start small business ventures in UAE. Thus now UAE is too dependent on Indian manpower. They have to keep India and Indians happy to maintain their local's luxurious life style. Philipinos and Bangladeshis are also contributing to their comforts, yet Indians, especially from people from Kerala are one of the major source of competitive human resource to UAE.

Having said that, almost 40% of Pakistan's standing army is pitched against eastern boarder to cater for hostile army which has deployed more than 70% of is army to their western boarder. comparing these armies gives a ration of 1:6 circa. Western front was activated to engage 40% of PA, thus leaving 20% to look after other affairs including internal security.

CPEC is now a reality, the only options left with those whose interests have been defined earlier have no other option either to slow its pace down or create an environment whereby its effectiveness is reduced. Thus, all these countries in the interest of their own country (which is right) are collaborating.

UAE on Sunday pledged total support to India in combating terrorism, as it looked towards elevating bilateral defence and security ties and inking a Strategic Cooperation Agreement during the visit of Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan here from Tuesday. The pacts are part of the 16 agreements to be signed between the two countries after the talks on January 25 between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Al Nahyan, who will be the Chief Guest at this year’s Republic Day Parade, UAE Ambassador Ahmed Al Banna told PTI in an interview here.

“We cooperate with India to combat and fight extremists and terrorists all over the world and we support Indian authority and government in their endevour in protecting itself from any terrorist or extremist group,” he said.

He was asked about the decisions taken by the two sides during Modi’s visit to UAE in 2015 on working together to control, regulate and share information on flow of funds that could have a bearing on radicalisation activities, cooperate in interdicting illegal flows and act against concerned individuals and organisations.

It was projected by the officials here at that time that the decision will help India in taking action against the most wanted criminal, Dawood Ibrahim, including freezing of his assets in the UAE.

However, the envoy refused to comment on any individual case including Dawood’s, even as reports said that UAE government has seized properties of the 1993 Mumbai blast accused worth Rs 15,000 crore. “I don’t know” was his cryptic reply.

Asserting that his country was among the first to condemn the terror strike on Indian airbase in Pathankot, Al Banna said the UAE had also supported the surgical strikes carried out by India.

“When the bombing of the airbase took place, we were the first ones to condemn it. UAE was among the first countries which supported Indian surgical strikes and we support India’s efforts to fight and counter attack and attack terrorists and extremists,” he said.

The UAE envoy also said the National Security Advisors of UAE and India have been holding consultations regularly.

After the first Strategic Dialogue on Friday, the UAE side, led by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash, held a meeting with NSA Ajit Doval, he added.

Asked about the role UAE, which is seen as a “key interlocutor” by India, could play in conveying Indian concerns to Pakistan over terrorism emanating from there, Al Banna said “We listen to them (Indian authorities). We coordinate with them and will be more than willing whenever we are asked by the Indian side to assist or interfere or take any action for betterment of our relationship….”.

He also said that they would work closely with India in Afghanistan where five UAE diplomats were killed earlier this month in a terror attack.

Noting that investigations were still on to find out those responsible for the attack, he said, “we will take our revenge (once we know the culprits).”

Al Banna also pitched for closer collaboration between the two countries in dealing with terror groups like DAESH (or al-Dawla al-Islamiya al-Iraq al-Sham), also known as Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

Naturally.

It was stupid to even assume that any country would openly return hundreds of billions of dollars worth of easy pickings just like that.

We tried it with Mauritius, who offered us a couple of their islands instead for military bases.

We tried it with Switzerland, who helped us with the investigation but refused to give the money.

We are trying it with UAE, who has instead offered us an investment fund (though it is a small amount compared to the black money stashed away).

But something is better than nothing.
