Games Village much more acceptable now, say CWG teams

New Delhi: After all the panic in the last few weeks, Thursday saw a turnaround of sorts for the organisers of the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

It seems the handing of the Games Village over to the Delhi government galvanised the workforce and inspired such confidence that at least three contingents now say the condition in the Village is much more acceptable now.

England, Wales, Australia, Scotland and Canada have finally stopped dithering and will be at the Games after all. The British and Canadian teams arrive today.

England decided to participate in the Commonwealth Games following reports from New Delhi that the improved level of arrangements will be in place shortly.

"Our Delhi team is seeing the improved levels of resourcing required to resolve the operational issues. We'll monitor the situation to ensure the village and stadia are safe," Commonwealth Games England said in a statement.

The England team decided to travel to Delhi after "unanimously" agreeing the decision with its 17 member sports.

England's men hockey team will stay at a holding camp after reaching Delhi early today, before moving into the Games Village.

The England statement came a few hours after their Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland counterparts revealed their teams would be travelling to Delhi as scheduled.

Wales chief Anne Ellis said they were convinced by the assurances given by the CWG organisers to CGF that all glitches will be fixed in time.

Ellis added, "We're satisfied that everything is ready. A week ago it was like a building site, although most of it was cosmetic work, there were serious problems with plumbing and electricity.

"But that wasn't in the village. The food zone has been ready for some time, the international zone has been up and running and our tower block, which we went into last week with our advance party, has been turned round and is now comfortable for our athletes."

Scotland, which has already delayed the departure of its athletes, also came out with positive signals, saying that it was "heartened" by the progress made by the organisers.

The Scottish official also issued a statement in which they expressed happiness that the state government of the host city was putting up efforts to clear the mess.

"We are heartened that Sheila Dikshit has personally taken control of the situation and ensuring that the necessary additional resources are brought in," Jon Doig, who is Team Scotland's representative in Delhi, said in a statement.

Australian CWG Association chief Perry Crosswhite also said the condition of the Games Village is "acceptable" as of now and also confirmed arrival of their contingent for the Games.

"Conditions at the Commonwealth Games Village are acceptable. Things are getting better every time. The residential towers at the Village are improving. However, water at the basement inside the Village is a bit of a concern to us," Crosswhite said at a media conference.

"But Delhi CM has directed the concerned authorities to clean it up by tonight and we think the assurance given to us will be fulfilled," he said.

He also assured that Australian contingent would reach the capital on September 27.

In New Delhi on Thursday, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh held a meeting with union ministers and others involved in the sporting event.

The meeting came two days after international delegates lambasted the Games Village as "dirty and uninhabitable." (With PTI inputs)

on the other side govt has made a massive investment into the preparation and such a spending can't go unnotice and will show it's brightness ..

verious concern raised regarding condition of the game's village , but it's a fect that even in a top notch hotels the manager told you to just wait in the lobby till the boy clean the room ,

few contries are even more critical in their approch , but at the same time Pakistan High Commissioner to India in New Delhi expressed hopes that the ensuing Commonwealth Games would be held as per schedule and the contingent..

pakistan is coming with it's 75-member contingent including tennis star Aisam-ul Haq who will be the biggest attrection in india..

India-Pakistan hockey match on October 10, in Delhi will add to the spice and possible fill the void created by few " gora" players who opt to pull out ..

hopefully at the end CWG will conclude at the high note..

India should not have been awarded CWG: AOC

Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) President John Coates today said India should never have been awarded the hosting rights of the Commonwealth Games given the shoddy preparations that have marred the build-up to the October 3 to 14 event.

"In hindsight, no, they shouldn't have been awarded the Games," Coates was quoted as saying by 'The Australian Associated Press'.

Delhi is racing against time to be ready for the Games after several missed deadlines and allegations of inefficiency and corruption against the organisers severely dented its image as an international sporting venue.

Coates said the Commonwealth Games Federation could have been more actively involved in the preparations.

"The problem is the Commonwealth Games Federation is under-resourced. It doesn't have the ability to monitor the progress of cities in the way the Olympic Committee does," he said.

Coates said had the International Olympic Committee been involved, the work would have been monitored better.

"If that had been the case here in Delhi, then certainly something would have been done a lot sooner because obviously the venues are not ready," he said.

"You can't ever cut any slack when your focus should be on the best conditions for the athletes," he added.

But Coates refused to say whether participating nations should pull out of the Games, which are already short of star power after several high-profile withdrawals such as Usain Bolt, Chris Hoy and Asafa Powell.

"I'm certainly not going to be drawn into making a commentary on whether Australia and other countries should pull out from this part of the world," he said.

CWG village better than Beijing: England Chef de Mission

NEW DELHI: England's Chef de mission Craig Hunter on Thursday said the arrangements at the Delhi Games village is much better as compared to the Beijing Olympics.

" The Commonwealth Games Village here is better than the Beijing Olympics," Hunter told reporters, adding that the Delhi Games would set a high standard for the hosts of London Olympics 2012.

"Every Games Village has progressed and this one sets a new standard. In other Games villages four athletes use one bathroom, whereas here only two would share one bathroom. Even the training facilities are wonderful," added Hunter, who has been staying in the capital for the last four days.

The Chef de Mission was also all praise for some Games venues, terming those as world class.

Asked about the security concerns, Hunter said: "We are happy with the arrangements and I can say that the pullouts of the players were not due to security or any other reasons."

"Security has always been an issue since 1972 Munich Olympic disaster. Some of the athletes, who opted out did so due to packed international calendar and injuries. However, we do have some Olympic and World Champions coming for CWG 2010."

LONDON: Chef de Mission of England Craig Hunter on Wednesday warned the Commonwealth Games organisers that time is running out for them to clean up the preparation mess even as sports minister Hugh Robertson said it would be "an utter tragedy" if next month's Games does not go ahead.

Hunter demanded safety guarantees of the English athletes from organisers following the collapse of a footbridge near the main venue of the Games yesterday but assured that as of now his country has no plans to pull out of the October 3-14 mega event.

"Time is beginning to run out. We are close to the wire, and teams may start to take things into their own hands. Athletes will start getting on planes soon and decisions will have to be made. We need new levels of reassurance," he said, but added that "it's hard to cancel an event of this magnitude".

Hunter made it clear that he was not at all happy about the unfinished work at the residential zones allocated to English athletes. He said 60 of the 280 rooms were leaking, while showers, air conditioning units and electrical sockets were malfunctioning.

"There is mud everywhere, there is a lot of remedial work to be done but the days of monsoon rain have delayed the work. There is unsafe electrical equipment in some rooms, in some areas there are plumbing issues, things like doors not fitting properly and one of the walls adjacent to our accommodation which has washing machines has not been plumbed in. On the top floor there is no secure barrier," he said.

"A significant number of bedrooms are not watertight and have been flooded, while the monsoon and the security lockdown of the village means there have been significant delays to what we thought was a relative straightforward process," he was quoted as saying by 'Daily Telegraph'.

"Later we heard the tragic news of the bridge collapsing and workers injured. We are now pressing the organising committee and the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) to give us real guarantees that the venues are safe."

England 'could pull out of Games'

England's participation in the Commonwealth Games has been thrown into doubt after a stadium bridge collapsed, two top athletes withdrew from the competition and a third threatened to pull out.

With just 11 days until the start of the Delhi Games, the head of England's team demanded guarantees of safety for competitors after 27 workers were injured, five of them seriously, when a major walkway connecting a stadium to a car park in New Delhi collapsed on Tuesday.

The departure of Scotland's athletes to the Commonwealth Games has been delayed after fears over the readiness of the accommodation. Team Scotland's first party of 41 athletes and staff, including boxing, rugby 7s and wrestling, were due to fly out on Thursday but the travel plans have been postponed.

Olympic 400 metres champion Christine Ohuruogu announced she would not be competing for England after suffering from cramp at a training session last weekend. Lisa Dobriskey, who won the 1,500m title at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, also chose to quit the Games after suffering from injuries throughout the season.

Meanwhile, Phillips Idowu looked set to become the third high-profile English athlete to pull out. The world triple jump champion wrote on his Twitter account that he was too concerned about safety at the site to take part. However, his agent Ricky Simms said on Tuesday night that a firm decision had not yet been made and that he advised his client to sleep on it.

Head of the England team Craig Hunter, who has also highlighted concerns about the athletes' village, is demanding reassurances from organisers and warned that "time is beginning to run out" before the Games begin.

There are fears some teams could pull out of the Indian Games due to substandard accommodation, with 60 of the 260 rooms set aside for English athletes not watertight, and a major cleaning programme needed throughout.

Mr Hunter said the team remains "committed to participating", but added: "It's hard to cancel an event of this magnitude but we are close to the wire, and teams may start to take things into their own hands. Athletes will start getting on planes soon and decisions will have to be made. We need new levels of reassurance."

Sir Andrew Foster, chairman of Commonwealth Games England, said he is "very concerned" about the preparations being made for the event.

A decision about England's participation will be made on Wednesday or Thursday as the safety and security of the site is assessed.
