India all set to kill Maitri SRSAM Project
After Four years of negotiations with French MBDA , over development of Short Range Surface to Air missile (SRSAM) . code named “ Maitri ” . it seems that India will go global to shop for the missile , as per media reports , Indian and French were not able to agree on terms of funding and technology transfers for the project .
according to Sources , India wanted to further develop missile technology developed from the scrapped “ Trishul Missile project ” and mate it with the proposed SRSAM offered by French , but MBDA wanted to bring in their technology in the missile , which could have resulted into no Indian technological contribution to the project and cost of development was considered much higher then other missile development carried out by the country .
After India’s Indigenous Trishul SRSAM Missile project was scrapped in 2008 , India has been looking for a replacement project since then and in mean while ordered two regiments of Spyder quick-reaction surface-to-air missile systems from Rafael has interim solutions.
India along with Israel has been developing long range surface to air missile with 70 km+ range , while India’s locally developed Medium range surface to air Akash Missile has been inducted in the armed forces and the missile carries 25 to 35 km range . Indian has been looking for a 15km Short range surface to air missile to complete , low-Med-high SAM coverage .
Barak-2 aka Barak-8 , will be tested this year in Israel first and other tests will be carried in India, Missile has been developed for Indian navy , but a modified version will also be inducted into Indian army and Indian air force after 2013 induction in Indian navy .
Indian army has 10 regiment requirement for the SRSAM class missile , and will be primarily will be replacing old Russian Sam systems . India has already send Global tender to Russian , German , South Korean , Ukraine, Israel and American companies regarding this recently and technical requirement of the missiles are similar to the proposed Maitri SRSAM Project.
As per Tender requirements Two regiments will be brought off the shelf from the winning bidder and rest will be assembled in India .
