What's new

India accounts for just 3.5% of global research output: Study

I am surprised, nobody has asked what these percentages mean !!!

What exactly? - India produces 3.5% of the papers published in the world?

Then it means nothing.. Bah.

That said, no country remotely approaches USA in terms of R&D output ..... no.2, 3, 4 are all lumped together.

And the reason USA excels at R&D is because the freely operating entrepreneurial spirit, rule of law (patents) etc.

India is yet to reach USA stage .. but when it does, it should also further strengther the freedoms already avaliable.

Meanwhile, we need focus on absorbing the technologies already in place in the west. There is some catching up to do, before we start focusing on basic research .... essentially re-inventing the wheel.

Brain drain is one reason, but major one would importance of research in Colleges, how many actually are interested in it? even so what facilities do our Universities have?

Also what is private sector's contribution to research?
Actually many, but if you are payed 1/3 or 1/5 of salary a person with less capability in an MNC and there is lack of research institutes, equipments and funding to present your work, collaborate etc.

Losts of students wants to do the research but since they can't get comforts their friends enjoys, it changes things. Those who do pursue research, try their level best to leave the country.

Do our Govt labs produce any output thats of value ??

ISRO's outputs are comparable to NASA, in the ratio of their respective budgets.

But, more than needing our own NASA (at it's scale), we need an APPLE.

Private sector R&D pays for itself.

Right now, private sector needs for technology are more economically met by techonology transfer from west.

It's cheaper to buy from Dupont, that re-invent what Dupont discovered.

But yes, a time will come when Duponts of the west will have nothing new to offer us, once we absorb everything.

Then, we need to join the search with the Duponts of the world .... but now, there "IS" a cheaper way available.

Let economics drive R&D.

i know its a shame that india accounts for 8% world population and just 3.5% of the scientific research but considering the fact that we have JUST started, its not bad

India's population is over 17% of the world population...1.2 billion out of 7 billion.

Give them the facilities they will. But one also keep in mind the critical knowledge we have and not have. To test Kaveri, we had to rely on Russia, for GSAT-10, we are using French one etc. Point is these labs and facilities do produce competitive products and relatively less amount, Chandrayan is a perfect example of optimization, PARAM super computer etc. all developed in India.

The politics and greed present in these facilities and its product is one of the major hurdle.

There are hell lot of factors and variables.

You guys will be surprised to know that Indian people have designed so many things that are produced by West. One of my Asst. Prof. when interviewed for the job, told that chips designed by him is in production in UK. Now, when he came to India, he had trouble finding good students as most of them go abroad. Also the lack of facilities for conducting experiments and fabrication a problem.

Other professor who works in nano-technology has to collaborate with researchers from US and the theoretical work was send to them and for doing simulation, codes were sent to them just because of lack of high level computing.

Many friends of mine, went for internship in various universities got offer for PhD, MS is not preferred, Indians are good PhD people. Their work efficiency was on par with other local students.

But to absorb these talents, private players have to open many institutes. Customized engineers are the need of the hour especially when we have such a bulk of young population.

No need for Jack of All Trades, we need "Master in One".
