"There is India, a free society (of) over a billion people, successfully lifting countless millions out of poverty and into the middle class," Trump said while addressing world leaders at the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly.

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday heaped praise on India’s efforts to lift millions of its citizens from the clutches of poverty. “There is India, a free society (of) over a billion people, successfully lifting countless millions out of poverty and into the middle class,” Trump said while addressing world leaders at the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly.

His remarks come nearly a week after the 2018 global Multidimensional Poverty Index has revealed that India has made giant strides in reducing multidimensional poverty, bringing down its poverty rate from 55 per cent to 28 per cent in ten years. According to estimates released by the UN Development Programme and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative, more than 271 million people have come out of poverty in India between 2005-06 and 2015-16.

This was Trump’s second address to the General Debate of the UN General Assembly.

In his about 35-minute address, he said over the years, history has transpired in the halls of the UN General Assembly. “We think of the many before us who have come here to address the challenges of their nations and of their times and our thoughts turn to the same question that ran through all their speeches, resolutions and through every word and every hope.”

“It is the question of what kind of world will we leave for our children and what kind of nations they will inherit,” Trump said.

Trump also mentioned Saudi Arabia’s bold new reforms and Israel “proudly celebrating” its 70th anniversary as a thriving democracy in the Holy Land.

.
There is no doubt about India's track record of pulling continental sized population groups from poverty into a decent middle class life.

There can be no politics on that. Congress or BJP, the efforts and results keep coming.

Cheers, Doc

He just quoted the UN report... which is far more credible than a wild imagination of a fanboy...

ITR FILLINGS has reached all time high in India... even the BPL card holders were caught depositing around 2,00,000 in each family member's bank account during demonetization...

If they are below poverty line[BPL] card holders and gets rations and maybe same monthly payment through Aadhar Card registration, how they are lifted out of poverty, the reason they are in BPL category even then...

Aren't these schemes making people more despondent, dependent on free dole-outs with small portions and not allowing people to make a jump start.

China followed a different model...

In other words, China had to forge a homegrown political and economic system that was good for its own people. It didn’t copy lock, stock and barrel from other countries far ahead. It recognized that economic development and political stability were intertwined. President Jinping has built on the vision of his forebears, and articulated ideas on governance, which include; keeping the Chinese Dream alive through hard work and innovation, realizing youthful dreams, and connecting Chinese dreams with the rest of the world by sharing the benefit with other countries.

China has identified five development concepts to battle poverty, which I believe are useful to Nigeria. Ensure that innovation and development are the driving forces, solve the problem of unbalanced development, solve the problem of harmony between man and nature (preserve the environment), ensure there is internal and external linkage in development, solve the problem of social equity and justice.

“Making people receive more education is the fundamental way to tackle the issues of chronic poverty and poverty passed from generation to generation.”
