In India 7 yrs in jail for eating beef; cops can raid on mere suspicion

.
(Indian Express) Cow slaughter is now a serious offence and could invite a jail term of up to seven years in Madhya Pradesh. Consuming, keeping or transporting beef of any cow progeny will invite the same punishment. A police official not below the rank of a head constable — or any person authorised by a competent authority — has the power to enter, inspect and search any premises “where he has reason to believe that an offence (under this Act) has been, is being or is likely to be committed and take necessary action’’.

These stringent provisions will be notified after the Madhya Pradesh Gau-Vansh Vadh Pratishedh (Sanshodhan) Bill, 2010 received the President’s assent on December 22.

Citing public interest and communal harmony, the BJP government argued that existing legislation provided for only a three-year jail term for cow slaughter and had several flaws. The state government amended it in July 2010 and sent it to the President. The new provisions will enable authorities to punish transporters, their employees and drivers with jail terms from six months to three years.

Do not support this, breach of fundamental rights. Strange that Supreme Court upheld it. Who the hell are they to tell me what to eat or what not to eat? (except human flesh and endangered species)

Its a just hypothesis ,not well established or accepted .So don't get too excited.

A Brahmin's Cow Tales
Beef—it's the oldest shibboleth in the Indian mind. It is with textual evidence from Hindu,Buddhist and Jain canons that historian D.N. Jha takes on the sacred cow.

SHEELA REDDY ON D.N. JHA
For over a month, the mild, balding professor of history, Dwijendra Narayan Jha, has been shuffling to hisclassroom in Delhi University escorted by a police constable. Teaching ancient history does not usuallyendanger one's health, but ever since Jha went public with the best-kept secret in Indian history—the beef-eating habits of ancient Hindus, Buddhists and even early Jains in a book titled Holy Cow—Beef in IndianDietary Conditions—his phone hasn't stopped ringing. "The calls are usually abusive," says Jha, "butsometimes they demand to know what evidence I have, and one day late in July it was an anonymous caller threatening dire consequences if I ever brought out my book."The calls had two effects on the 61-year-old historian: he called the police and braced himself for battle."There is a cultural war going on and academics have a role to play," Jha says calmly. But it's not the kind of war that he had anticipated. Even before his book could hit the stands, the vhp exhorted its cadre toconfiscate and burn copies. The bjp followed suit: one of its MPs, R.S. Rawat, wrote to the Union homeminister demanding not only a ban on the book but also the arrest and prosecution of its author and CBPublishers. But before the book could be burnt or banned, the Jain Seva Sangh stepped in. Outraged byJha's reported assertion that their founder Mahavira ate meat, the Hyderabad-based organisation sought acourt injunction against the book, leaving the nonplussed historian without the words to fight his war.Anticipating controversy and debate, Jha meticulously scoured ancient texts, culling material from originalsources for over two years. "If they want to ban my book, then they will have to ban the Vedas, theUpanishads, the Sutras and the epics. Where will they stop? I have given evidence, if they have counter-evidence, why don't they come forward with it? But they are so illiterate, they haven't even heard of thosetexts, let alone read them. I have texts and they go by blind faith," he says. "That is what a historian can andshould do: counter faith with facts," he adds.Jha's interest in dietary history began a few years ago after reading French historian Fernand Braudel'shistory of early modern European diet. But he soon became intrigued by the beef-eating habits of Indianswhich existed in Rig Vedic times and continued till the 19th century and after, despite repeated Brahminical

In country like India where people of all religions live this is type of laws are common.what about Jain's they are pure vegetarian if we think according to them than Non veg should be completely banned in India.sikhs only eat jhatka meat where as muslims eat halal and majority of hindus dont mind whether its jhatka or halal.I think people in India are more tolerant for these things.I dont think Non availability of Beef meat in certain states is going to be any thing which is anti muslim.Christians also eat beef but I have not heard from any christian complaining........

this law is totally against the fundamental rights of human in a secular society. A person should have all the rights to eat whatever he/she wants those who want to eat should be able to eat pork/chicken/goat or beef & those who don't should not not it simple but forcing ones believe on another person & not letting him/her eat whatever he/she wants to eat in the disguise of sensitivities of the majority is abnormal to say the least & it's utterly deplorable i thoroughly condemn this weird law

Its not the question of eating the meat but slaughter of cow which as per Hindu belief is sacred animal.

I have posted only 2 sources out of hundreds on this thread and these BJP extremists are not willing to even listen. So much for liberal Indians and their sham of a democracy.

Its not accepted. And nobody gives a ****.

Look at post #243 without your BJP extremist glasses.

Man hindus, particularly Brahmins used to eat beef no problem before in history. This is a fact.

Religion and culture keep evolving. Do you think Hindus just woke up one day and decided not to eat beef? You think you are going to change our way of life by posting a few links? You are laughable.

It is belief remember?? If I post the benefits of eating pork will your people start eating it?

Nope devloped in centuries.

It's true that when Vedas were written, Brahims used to slaughter cow. However in coming time they grown out of cow meat. Fair enough, red meat is bad for health anyway. If it hurts someone's sensitivity, lets ban open slaughter of cows and allow slaughtering only in licensed enclosed place, which means no gory display of headless cows on street in the name of religious custom.

But this law is stupidity at best, 7 years of eating a stake, that too if a constable doubts I have eaten it? WTF?

Nope- we will counter it with its drawbacks- and it will be a choice to eat it or not to the individual- not a imposed Law worth 7 years--
