In exclusive deal, India to get ‘Most Advanced’ F-16 fighter jets by 2019-20

I think you are looking from an operational perspective, as I said, we want US on our side for UNSC and other important membership. Unless, there is a common geostrategic interest in which military angle is quite important, US may not push India into those elite clubs.
I am looking at this from an operational perspective.

That said, looking at it from a strategic position, there is no indication that a military purchase of any kind has ever been the basis of the kind of partnership you are talking about creating with the US. There is no silver bullet to these things, it is about creating systimatic ties across the board, India could buy 1000 F-35s and it wouldn't amount to anything. Instead to reach the objectives you state will require a combination of diplomatic, economic and military strategies/engagments.

I think if we are really wanting to compensate USA for its support then we should
  1. Look for avenger drones
  2. look for C130 XJ line and global MRO
  3. seek DTII projects results and movements on paper to see how much is actually shared/progressed
  4. fishhook ocean detection jointly with Japan and USA

Its best if we keep them out of frontline jets but then we never know.. if they give a deal which has more strategic value than Rafales/French side or Russian side then perhaps rope them in as well and lets then buy 100 such jets.

But question is will USA able to match France strategic depth or Russian strategic depth? On paper yes..with fancy PR campaigns.. In reality very very tough..

law of land and restrictions wont allow it or make it very difficult to give them to us.

Sure, that still didnt stop them from acting up in the C295 deal, did it?
Well that's to be expected, but HAL are certainly finding their feet and reforming themselves so I don't feel the need to "bash" them with quite the same spirit as I had in the past. Now they are looking to work with the pvt sector it is clear to see it is not business as usual with them.

Nothing to bash, I actually think that this new found competition will actually be beneficial for them in the long run.

But make no mistake, them finding out TATA might also be lead integrators of fighter jets, will not sit all that well.

Wild thought..

Could they not be made for India and their old ally?

Leverage would always retained at home and never outsourced.

For NSG waiver India promised $10 billion worth of business. The expectation from India was that MMRCA would be given. But India instead went for C-17s, C-130s, P8Is

For NSG membership the negotiations were more specific.

It would be hard for government to justify signing CISMOA without a fighter.

NSG membership <==> Fighter <==> CISMOA

The pressure is a fighter aircraft rejected in MMRCA is being again considered to be made in India after some cosmetic changes, secondly it will kill Tejas in longer run for sure as IAF will get further excuse to kill Tejas

BJP is a west leaning government. There is absolutely zero pressure on them. They just need to find a way to justify the purchases and not being labeled as sellouts. The incumbent government has been under pressure only from Russia.

Super Hornet makes more sense instead of F-16

Super Hornet IMO would beat the F-16 in a dog fight.
And it can fit the requirements of both IAF & IN.

But still I don't think either F-16 or 18 is coming to India.

A strange opnion I came across today,
" LM can setup the fighter production line and can produced fighter in India under MII but it doesn't mean India will buy them."
 it's really really hard PR push.
Good luck 60 year old "TEEN"

@PARIKRAMA @Abingdonboy
I tried my best to dig on this F-16 story but it hit rock bottom everywhere. The people who supposed to know things aren't aware of this and officially they are sticking to DM MP's statement. Unofficially they are saying LM can do that if they want but it doesn't means we are buying. This is were doubt is. They are playing it safe even in unofficial statement !!!! Why would LM do that for NO local customer !!!!
Anything you guys know.

@dadeechi : dude you sure about your source ??? You are claiming a lot of things for a lot time now which people in official capacity don't know !!!!

ARE YOU SURE YOUR SOURCE ISNT A JUST FANBOY ??? Sorry if it's harsh.

Main factors of dog fight are:
1) Seeing first.
2) Superior altitude.
3) Superior speed.

F-16 has superior canopy view, much better speed, acceleration, T/W ratio, climb rate. Thus F-16 has much better chances in dog fight.

F/A 18 has surperior manverability.

coupled with HMCS+AIM-9X=fire shot first kill.

Maneuverability means very little without speed and altitude. In 1941 Russian fighters had superior maneuverability over German Me-109. But it ended very bad for them.

1) Sources - Yes

2) Certainty - Hmm.. There is only one certainty in life ... Death:D
