Singapore keen to build city in outskirts of Dhaka
Tribune Online Report

Visiting Senior Minister of State for Foreign and Home Affairs of Singapore Zulkifli Masagos came up with the desire
Singapore is interested to construct an independent city with all modern facilities at Purbachal, in the outskirts of the capital Dhaka.

Visiting Senior Minister of State for Foreign and Home Affairs of Singapore Zulkifli Masagos came up with the desire when he paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her office on Tuesday noon, reports BSS.

After the meeting, Prime Minister's Press Secretary AKM Shameem Chowdhury made the disclosure to the reporters.

"Our investors are very much interested in setting up an independent city having all modern facilities at Purbachal and it could be built under joint venture with Bangladeshi entrepreneurs," Zulkifli said.

Zulkifli Masagos informed the premier that the Singaporean entrepreneurs are also keen to set up a power plant in Bangladesh.

The PM said her government is ready to allocate land at Mirersarai in Chittagong for the Singaporean investors to set up an exclusive economic zone.

Sheikh Hasina also sought support of the Singaporean government to train up the young generation in tourism and other specialised sectors for further development of Bangladesh.

In this connection, she also sought cooperation of the Singaporean government to set up a training institute for tourism. -

Singapore can help with infrastructure consultation, advice and support, but i think our own developers can fund the new city.

we lack in tech

In the construction industry what tech do we lack? Essentially what we are talking about is building a small modern satilite city, not anything that our developers technically havent built before.

Such as? What facilities are you talking about, that can't be built by local developers?

The main things that we need are management and planning of modern integrated townships, that have been built in and around dubai, doha and malaysia. The actual construction can be done by existing developers in BD, its the programme management and experience of building satilite townships that we lack.

It's a no fly project. Most of the locals at the outskirt of Dhaka, not interested to let go their land as they know their land price gonna worth 10 times more as the Dhaka city extends.

Forget it. Only people can do housing projects are mastans like Jamuna, Basundara etc. Its not the job of decent people in Bangladesh.

dhaka is not in near sea ahahahaha

Hah was about to say the same thing. :D but yes we could build it on the long stretch of coastline Bangladesh south east has. But singapore is interested in building it near dhaka as it is the capital city.

I want our cities to be built by planners of great American cities so we can have Western style metros (minus the haram stuff). I have been to the Far East and I didn't like what I saw. Everything is just crammed into small space, lacking good design, that are highly livable. They just like high rises. I know they may be cheaper but we should spend that bit more and hire American/British planners/advisers. Employing Far Eastern techniques could ruin the country. You only get one chance.

With Bangladesh population density, i don't think US cities with their huge suburb is a good option for long term solution.

You can still build classy, spacious suburbs. Also, as Bangladesh grows economically I expect the population growth to stall and then even start coming down.

I don't mean cookie-cutter homes within a grid pattern that look identical to each other, which are usually designed for low income people, but nice leafy suburbs with wide roads and individualized homes.

BD with 160 mn needs at least 15 planned mega cities throughout the country, each surrounded by sun-urban towns. AKA decentralization which will also reduce the overall pop. density throughout the country. Dhaka has become an uninhabitable hell hole. But brain dead morons run the bureaucracy where as politicians are morons anyway.
