IMSc unveils India's seventh-fastest supercomputer `Annapurna'

The Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc) at Chennai today unveiled India's seventh-fastest supercomputer, Annapurna, to provide a boost to simulations and numerical calculations in the areas of statistical mechanics and condensed matter physics.

Annapurna is a high-performance computation (HPC) cluster having 1.5 Tera Byte (TB) memory and 30 TB storage space cluster capacity.

The supercomputer ranks below that installed at IISc Bangalore as well as the one at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, IMSc said, adding that it is on a par with the other supercomputers such as Vindhya, Aravalli and Kabru.

"Among broad-based scientific institutions in India, the Annapurna cluster is the third fastest, ranking below the IISc Bangalore and Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai," an IMSc release said.

Atomic Energy Commission chairman Srikumar Banerjee who unveiled the high performance computer at an even at the IMSc highly appreciated the technical team for developing the super computer in a completely non-commercial domain.

The computer will boost academic research in the field of computational biology, statistical mechanics and numerical calculations.

Suveet! Now we should do something about making the world's fastest supercomp. Chinese did it and hold the record now. And that too we're supposed to be the IT hub.

India gets another Supercomputer ? Annapurna | ZDNet

The brilliant minds at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc) in Chennai have developed India’s seventh fastest high-performance computation cluster. At an event at the institute, Annapurna was unveiled by Dr. Srikuma Banerjee (Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission).

With 1.5 Tera Byte memory and 30 TB storage cluster capacity the supercomputer is set to help researchers with computation and statistical analysis in fields such as condensed matter physics, lattice gauge theory, computational biology and complex systems research. The Annapurna cluster project is a Rs 6 crore ($1.3 million) investment which should bolster India’s research efforts. Annapurna boasts of some powerful technical specifications:

•1024 cores – Intel Nehalem 2.93 GHz chips
•1.5 tera byte memory
•30 TB storage
At peak speeds of 12 teraflops Annapurna is ranked as the third fastest cluster among the broad-based scientific institutions in India after those at the IISc Bangalore and Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai. This is IMSc’s forth high performance computing cluster, the other three known as Kabru, Vindhya and Aravalli are still operational. The Garuda grid, India’s national computing grid that connects 45 institutes in India uses IMSc’s Kabru.

Dr. Srikuma Banerjee, during the inauguration (pictured above, courtesy The Hindu) said that technological embargoes restricted development and different institutes were tasked with overcoming limitations on processors. US based Silicon Graphics International helped with Annapurna.

India Ranks 33 with TATA "EKA".

EKA, the supercomputer built at the Computational Research Laboratories (CRL), subsidiary of Tata in Pune has grabbed the top place in the list of Top500 Supercomputers announced at SC07, the international conference for high-performance computing, networking, storage and analysis at Reno, Nevada, USA.

The EKA has been rated as the fourth fastest supercomputer in the world and fastest supercomputer in Asia.

This Indian super computer uses nearly 1800 computing nodes and has a peak performance of 170 Teraflops (TFlops or Trillion Floating Point Operations per Second). Moreover, it delivers a sustained performance of 120 Teraflops based on the LINPACK benchmarks which are used by the world-wide community to rank supercomputers based on performance.

Celebrating this success Ratan Tata, Chairman of the Tata group said, “High performance computing solutions have an ever-increasing role in the scientific and new technological space the world over.”

He added, “The Tata group has supported this development activity and is extremely proud of the team that has developed and built this supercomputer, which is now ranked as the world’s fourth fastest. I am sure this supercomputer and its successor systems will make a major contribution to India’s ongoing scientific and technological initiatives.”

The supercomputer installed at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore is India’s second fastest computer and has been ranked 58th in the Top500 list. Meanwhile, the BlueGene/L System developed by IBM and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and established at DOE’s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California is the fastest supercomputer in the world.
