Imran refuses to collect funds for flood relief but asks to fund his Jalsas

PTI Chairman and former prime minister Imran Khan Friday expressed his inability to raise funds for flood relief efforts.

In a video released after he took an aerial view of the flood-affected areas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Imran said he could not currently collect funds for the flood-hit KP province, as he had to collect donations for Shaukat Khanum, NUML University and Al-Qadir University.

Chief Minister Mehmood Khan and Ali Amin Gandapur accompanied him during the aerial visit. Imran said he could only appeal for funds when assessment of losses will come to him as he should along with the relief activities being undertaken.

Looming shortages

Management of this crisis should henceforth be our number one national priority.

THE devastation wreaked by floods in large parts of the country will spare no one — not even those who have been lucky to avoid being directly impacted by the worst of the disaster unleashed by this year’s unseasonably heavy rains.

A formal assessment of the extent of damages has yet to be done, but the situation already looks quite grim. Vast tracts of farmland across the country are now submerged under water, which means many standing crops have been completely destroyed. Hundreds of thousands of livestock heads have additionally been lost to the floods. Transportation and communication networks have either been disrupted or completely destroyed in many areas, meaning it is no longer easy to move goods from one place to another.

Meanwhile, the people residing in the worst-affected areas do not have enough food to eat or clean water to drink. There are reports that many are suffering from starvation.

According to a report in yesterday’s paper, citizens in Dera Ghazi Khan had mobbed a food distribution truck out of desperation to feed themselves and their families. Those heart-wrenching scenes are expected to be repeated elsewhere as the relief response has been slow and mainly focused so far on saving lives that may otherwise be lost to the floods.

Given the extent of damage caused to crops and livestock and the disruption in transportation networks connecting farming areas to urban settlements, there are bound to be food shortages in the coming months, which will drive up food inflation even further.

Not only that, reports of widespread devastation in cotton plantations means industrial activity will be severely affected. With textiles contributing a major chunk of export earnings, the impact will reverberate throughout the economy.

The federal and provincial governments face an uphill battle in ensuring food security over the coming months, as importing foodstuff to make up for domestic shortages is unlikely to be an easy option because of the upheaval in global markets as well as Pakistan’s considerably weakened external position.

It is imperative, therefore, for the nation to come together to contribute towards relief and rehabilitation efforts. It is not only a moral obligation but also a practical need.

Farming communities form the backbone of Pakistan’s economy, and their suffering will directly affect the entire country if it is not alleviated quickly. There needs to be a coordinated effort to rebuild and restore as soon as the rains subside and the floodwaters recede.

Meanwhile, the government needs to set up a centralised crisis response task force so that it has better control of the situation and can address urgent needs like getting sufficient food and shelter to the displaced people. All federating units need to be a part of this task force to ensure there are no slippages in service delivery.

Management of this crisis should henceforth be our number one national priority.

They call him dishonest, and say he can't be trusted. Then blame him if he doesn't collect funds (even if that's not true).

First off all it's a lie. Secondly why you need Khan to collect funds. After all great honest leaders like Shabaz Shareef, Asif Ali Zardari, Fazlur Rahman are in power. Why do you need to a corrupt person like Imran Khan to collect funds. I hope people trust great democratic honest leaders of PDM.

Has Nawaz Sharif announced to raise funds from UK and overseas Pakistanis? You want to arrest and convict IK on terror charges, and at same time expected him to raise funds ?

He is 100% correct.

He said he won't raise money unless he knows who will spend it and how it will be spent. Should he raise funds ans hand it over to govt thieves?!

If the govt is not capable of doing its job they should stand aside.

It's quite clear that overseas Pakistanis are not contributing to the extent they have done in the past due to the regime change and overseas voting saga:

The headline doesn't support the narrative, but they are appealing to overseas Pakistanis to rise above politics and help. IK raises funds from overseas hence this rona-dhona by patwaris that he's not raising funds. Guess what geniuses, when people don't trust where the funds will go, they dont donate.

Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf chairman Imran Khan on Friday asked for an immediate acceleration of relief efforts for the flood victims in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as he visited the flood-hit Dera Ismail Khan and Tank districts to oversee the situation and meet the marooned families.

Talking to mediapersons after inspecting the flood relief camp set up for the affected people at the Ratta Kulachi Sports Complex here, the PTI chairman said that the calamity had surpassed the destruction caused by the 2010 floods in Sindh.

“We used to think of the 2010 floods as an unimaginable catastrophe, but according to reports, the devastation and the loss of life caused this time is far greater.

The construction of dams is extremely important for Pakistan. If there were dams, this water could have played an important role in the development of the region but now the entire nation will have to bear the burden of the flood damage in Sindh and Balochistan. During my tenure, I had planned to construct 10 dams,” he said.

Imran said, “I am under pressure to raise funds from the public for flood relief, but I will not raise funds until I have a clear picture of whether I can spend the money fairly or not. Our governments in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab will actively participate in all possible relief activities for the flood victims.”

The PTI chairman issued instructions to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Mahmood Khan to ensure immediate release of funds for the rehabilitation of the victims after assessing the losses on an emergency basis. He also appreciated the efforts of the district administration and provincial departments.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Mahmood Khan said his government was with the flood victims and would not leave them alone in this hour of difficulty. He said that an emergency had been declared in Dera Ismail Khan district to speed up the rescue and relief activities and ensure early rehabilitation of the affected people.

“Officials of the rescue and other departments are being dispatched from nearby districts to DI Khan so timely relief activities can be carried out,” he added.

On this occasion, Dera Ismail Khan commissioner Aamir Afaq gave briefing to PTI chairman Imran Khan and Chief Minister Mahmood Khan about the flood situation and relief operations.

Later, Imran Khan conducted an aerial survey of Tank city and adjoining flood-hit villages of Kot Allah Dad, Barakhel, Ranwal, Gara Baloch, Pir Kachha and Pathankot by helicopter.

Mahmood Khan gave a briefing to the PTI chairman on the aerial survey, while provincial minister Sardar Faisal Amin Gandapur and the deputy commissioner Tank briefed him on the flood situation, at the Jahaz Ground, Tank.

Later, Imran Khan also met with the flood victims at a relief camp set up at the degree college and issued instructions to the chief minister to provide full assistance to the Tank flood victims.

The PTI chairman was accompanied by provincial minister Shaukat Yousafzai, Senator Shibli Faraz, MNA Sheikh Yaqub, former federal minister Sardar Ali Amin Gandapur and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Secretary Dr Shahzad Bangash.
