‘Imran Khan is crushing the poor’: anger rises as inflation grips Pakistan

1. If you can't afford sugar, don't buy sugar. Your body will thank you.

2. Why has sugar gone from 3000rs to 7000rs? Price of fuel has increased but that should only impact cost of transport and maybe cost of milling. The cost of the product itself should not be impacted. We grow sugar, we don't import it.

It's deliberate profiteering.
We only use a kilo in a whole month for a family of 6

There is nothing Khan can do to being down inflation while trying to fix rotting economy. If Khan wasnt here believe me people would have learnt the meaning of being crushed by poverty at the hands of Nawaz and Zardari. It is a crucial and difficult turn for Pakistan. At this turn either we will brace through it like a nation or force khan to give relief by reversing all at coat of economic gains.

From Bhutto era socialism. These prices mean nothing in a market economy
As a retailer you have to sell all basic necessities at a loss (you get higher prices from wholesellers, or the lower price items that you can get aren't worth consuming).

Better bite the bitter pill and have the economy stabilise after a few years.

Simply impossible for a country like Pakistan where every Pakistani lives in luxuries yet say we are poor. I have seen people having no money for medical check up but an iphone in hand. Cost of living in Pakistan is still very cheap compared to other countries. We are a hajoom not a qoam in any sense. Abi kal ho TLP ka molvi poori qoam ki lay jar gaye hain and you think we can tackle such a massive task.

It might not have fully gone the way he promised or you expected. Don't expect miracles in one term. Like a wise man once said, you don't rectify a mess made in 40 odd years in a few years. That rule still applies.

Have mistakes been made? Without a doubt. Were these intentional mistakes? I doubt that. Next elections are on their way. You have a chance to elect Bilawal or Maryam.

I do not want to elect either. However, simpletons/ordinary citizens who do not understand how the economy works would expect miracles. They consider what they were promised and what they actually got at the end of a government's term while making their electoral decisions. PTI would have done better if it was keeping a watchful eye on actually what was up with the economy, what real problems were by simulating how they would take care of emergent/existing problems when they move from opposition to the government. It did not do so, instead made unrealistic promises that could never have been delivered on considering the economic fundamentals of the time (that are worsening; circular debt, stubborn devaluation of PKR, creation of larger trade deficits, and so on). The concept of shadow cabinets is alien to our politicians. They like doing street politics more than politics of substance that could actually pull the country out of the economic quagmire.
Its bigger problem in pakistan as rupee devlaued 70% due to large CAD(..i mean due to IK) that led to higher inflation

My gloirous leader kept the CAD large but atleast he kpet the rupee in control but IK did the opposite he let the rupee drop from 130 to 170 that is 30% drop.

Vs only 60% drop in my leader tenure(80 to 130)

Exactly nawaz sharif my glorious leader never made any promises 50 years ago neither did bhutto did. The only promise he made was he is get rottee kapra makaan to london and fullfilled that.

We love you.
Pakistan will gwt back on path of prosperity with PMLN and PPP like it was before PTI destroyed everything..
Lets just hope that like PMLN Q PTI pakistan doesnt get part lf history too like USSR

Strawman argument.

1. Did I say that prosperity is contingent upon the two dynasties coming back to power?

2. Did I say the leaders before did not promise Sun and the moon and everything in between?

People had tried and tested the status quo-ist parties repeatedly, they know about their capacity to deliver. They voted for PTI because they were frustrated, trusted IK as a truthful politician who not only had people's best interest at heart but also knew how to pull the country out of the mess. You can't compare the value to people of the promises made by the heirs of political dynasties and those made by what people perceived was an anti-status quo politician.

Sometimes the urge to make strawman arguments is too high rather than trying to understand the nuances of an argument.

There is simply no evidence that the present setup has any more resolve or ability to solve the problems than all the previous ones, only manipulated hopes and patently false promises, also like all the times before.

I have no opinion either this way or that way. I am neutral. I would support satan himself if he puts my country on the path of prosperity. As far as the performance of incumbents is concerned, it is a mixed bag. The heart seemed at the right place, but the capability seemed missing. I think some good things have been achieved in the exports domain and if the momentum continues for a couple of years, we might be in a position to address our ever-lurking balance of payment problem. There was a lot of brouhaha about tax reforms, but the performance there at best could be described as a mixed bag and that too if majority PoS in the retail sector in the country could be linked to FBR and a robust surveillance system exists to vet the validity of the e-transactions that emanate through these PoS (none of this has been achieved as of yet).

This is the key statement in your well-written post above that bears repeating, with the observation that this has been exactly the case throughout Pakistan's history. Surely this is not accidental. No one can be that stupid or ignorant.

Same in the West Indies .
simple terms , Everything has gone up 30% .

The PTI government has increased petrol prices by Rs 42 per liter in the last three years. Additionally, a substantial depreciation of the currency against the dollar is followed by an upward price surge. First, the imported goods become expensive, and subsequently, all those locally manufactured goods that depend on imported input also show a surge in the prices, thus unleashing an inflationary trend.

A high level of inflation might be justifiable in extraordinary circumstances. Inflation follows whenever economic activity is in high gear for a significant amount of time. Put in other words, there is a tradeoff between the level of inflation and unemployment.

A recent PIDE report shows that while the government estimates 6.5 percent unemployment, as many as 24 percent of the educated people (those with a university degree) are unemployed. As many as 40 percent of the educated women are unemployed. This phenomenon is called stagflation; it features both a high level of economic stagnation and inflation.

This begs the question of why there has been an unprecedented increase in the prices. The official explanation is as predictable as it is unhelpful. The government asserts that the corruption of the previous governments has been responsible for the current economic mess. For starters, this does not absolve this regime of its responsibility to deliver, especially more so because the sole agenda of the current regime was to curb the corruption by public office holders.

Even if the previous regimes’ corruption has contributed to the current economic mess, the diagnosis is not sufficient to fill empty stomachs. No one has ever contested the claim that Pakistan has sufferd from corruption by holders of public office. Ironically, corruption has significantly increased under the current regime. This is reflected in the country’s downward journey on the transparency ladder.

One might ask what the PM has done in the last three years to stem the tide of corruption? How effectively he deals with the individuals named in the Pandora Papers might provide a measure.

Other official explanations of a spike in the inflationary trend are essentially an exercise in the race to the bottom. When the government spokespersons compare the price levels in Pakistan to the price level in other countries and take satisfaction of sorts that prices in Pakistan are still lower than some, this contradicts the long-held and oft-repeated claim of the current regime that prices increase on account of corruption by their rulers.

Of course I know that PMIK cannot do anything, given the system, of which he is a part of.

Lots of people on PDF were upset at me for bluntly saying that evident truth that the promised naya Pakistan will prove to be just like purana Pakistan, and many still are, but the truth remains the same. Those on PDF who were part of the manipulations to install the purported savior of the nation have some introspection and explanations due, but I am not holding my breath for that at all given their utter shamelessness.

On topic, the nation can only brace for more hard times in the next few months before things stop deteriorating so fast. Until the next slide downwards. Sad, but true.

bhai IK promised he is going to eliminate poverty ... na rahain gai poor na rahay gi poverty khatam baat! you guys only want to criticize IK bilawaja
