ISLAMABAD: Chairman Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaaf Imran Khan said on Friday that the Zardari-Gilani regime seemed to have started implementing the provisions of dreaded Mike Mullen memo.

“It appears the play suggested in the memo undermining the security of the country and institutions responsible for its provision has already been operationalised,” Khan said in a formal statement issued to this newspaper.

Amid unconfirmed reports that the Army chief and the DG ISI might be removed by the Gilani regime anytime for their refusal to compromise on the memogate, Imran Khan expressed his utter shock at what he called irresponsible statement made by the prime minister on Thursday.

Imran Khan said that the PM’s tirade against his own army had endangered the very security of the country. “His query ‘who gave Osama a visa’ not only showed a wilful targeting of the state security apparatus but also undermined the country itself since he seemed to be in consonance with those external forces that have been accusing Pakistan of aiding and abetting terrorism,” said Khan.

The chief of the emerging third political option in Pakistan — the PTI — said that for a prime minister to jeopardise the country and its security in his foolish attempt to create a conflict amongst the state institutions is irresponsible and simply unacceptable.

Also, according to Imran Khan, with the Abbottabad Commission still in progress and the Supreme Court still seized with the memo issue, the timing of the prime minister’s unwarranted outburst reflects a larger game at hand, especially when this outburst comes alongside the nonsensical NATO report attempting to indict the Pakistan army in the Salala episode.

With the Zardari-Gilani PPP government voicing the same views that the enemies of Pakistan harp on trying to link Pakistan and its state institutions to terrorism, the chairman PTI felt this corrupt leadership had endangered Pakistan itself.

“In the light of this, he expressed the view that to all intent and purpose, it appears the play suggested in the Memo undermining the security of the country and the institutions responsible for its provision, has already been operationalised,” Khan feared.

The memo, which in the government’s view in a non-issue as against the view of the apex court, army, ISI and the opposition - which all consider it a serious conspiracy against the national security - promises to get the Army and the ISI chiefs replaced besides constituting a national security team to the entire satisfaction of the United States.

The Memo also envisages a compromise on Pakistan’s nuclear programme. Mansoor Ijaz alleged that the he was used as conduit by Husain Haqqani to deliver this memo to Mike Mullen. Mansoor also alleged that Haqqani had the blessings of President Asif Ali Zardari to deliver this memo to US senior officials. Haqqani rejects charges by Mansoor and says that he has not written any memo. He also casts doubts on the integrity of Mansoor.
