Impact of the Media in Pakistan

Here are some facts about Geo and some example of how Geo demorolizes the population and the general body of the Pakistani diaspora.

. Geo last year repeatedly telecasted false news about the Pakistani economy, the political situation and hence the stock market crashed in Pakistan In a pre-orchestrated campaign.

. Geo focuses on the negative news and instead of focusing on solutions it shows bodies of dead people in contradiction of PEMRA and all decency requirements.

. In a planned manner Geo supresses and ignores good news like 5.1 billion dollar of oil refinery in Pakistan and a $28 Billion Emar international island development, and–there is no discussion of the Bullet Trains in Pakistan.

. Geo does not focus foreign interference in Pakistani affairs.

. Geo did not discuss the 89 separatist movements in India in 2007 …from Seven Northeastern sister states, to the Naxalite insurrection, to Bihar to Kashmir, to Assam etc…

. Geo Dramas: 50 percent of the dramas are Indian dramas on Geo and 25 percent are with mix cast (Indian and Pakistani) and Indian film.

. Geo focuses on showing beheading of people and other depressing news.

. Geo did not cover for 36 hours the killing of 3000 Muslims in Gujrat?

. Urdu is not used by many hosts. Morning host shows are in English and “Urdlish” ( a horrible combination). The Younger generation is being spoiled by using them as instruments of hedonism.

. Some of the shows are way beyond the pale on being modern. Nudity is not modernity. Science and Technology is modernity.

. Geo plays into the hands of the opposition parties. It does not discuss opportunities for development.

When Mr. Shaharayar interviewed the President of Azad Kashmir he interrupted him and did not allow him to speak about the problems with the article of accession of Kashmir to India (which is now lost) if it ever existed.

. Geo continues to use Indian jargon like “partition”. Partition signifies a temporary dissection of the whole. India was never whole. Even during British times there were more than 500 states in the Subcontinent. Some of them banded together to make Pakistan and others banded together to make India.

. Discussion of Kashmir, Manvanagar, Junagarh are non-existent on Geo. Most Geo maps show Kashmir as part of Pakistan. Azad Kashmir is never shown. Some Geo maps sill show the Nothern Areas as part of India or part of Kashmir.

. Kamran Khan was getting RS 25 lakh per month. Income vs. salary? Dr. Shahid Mahmud used to get Rs 22 laks per month. He was a member of NSF student Hamid Mir the Editor of “Ausaf” get Rs. 22 Lakh per month.

. Nadia Khan gets Rs 6 lacs per month. Income vs. salary? When Geo was not able to broadcast the 8-hour cricket match, Geo said they lost 1 billion Rupees, After the ban Goo kept on broadcasting for 36 hours without any income?Let us investigate the players involved with Geo from information that is publicly available. We see these links which will be analyzed.

1) The controversial David Hazinski an ex US Navy Petty Officer with contacts with the State Department and the American Jewish Committee (AJC)
2) Who is Todd Fratz and why does Geo associate with such characters?
3) Casper Weinberger, Ronald Reagan’s indicted and pardoned Secretary of Defense who predicted the “Next War” with a rogue state like Iran. Why does Geo align itself with known war mongeres.
4) Geo has strategic links with SkyTV of the UK, CNN, IBN-CNN in India and the Voice of America (VOA). See article on VOA Geo alliance in Pakistan. http://www.usembassy.gov/pakistan/h05111301.html

ORIGINS OF GEO:

Geo was started with the help of an ex US Naval Petty Officer by the name of Hazinski who has links with Mr. Casper Weinberger and many Indian channels.
According to (http://www.intelligentmc.com/people.html) “Most recently, he re-designed the central International Broadcast Center for the Voice of America in Washington and is consulting on new network launches for the VOA”. Mr. Hazinski is the principal of the company called IntelligentMC (http://www.intelligentmc.com/Welcome.html,2870 Peachtree Road #713, Atlanta, GA 30305-2918, USA, email: info@intelligentmc.com, url: http://www.intelligentmc.com).the other principal of Intelligent MC is Mr. Todd Frantz. “Todd comes to IMC from 10 years at CNN in Atlanta”. He has links to “Cox Center for International Mass Communication Training and Research at The University of Georgia”.

David Hazinski, associate professor at the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, is the principle architect of GEO-TV and managed the station’s launch. Hazinski was contacted by the Jang Group, Pakistan’s largest newspaper publisher and GEO-TV’s owner, after he shepherded the successful launch of a similar station in India in January 2001. Aaj Tak, the first all-news, Hindi-language channel in India, now has a 60% share of the news audience in India.

As one of the owners of Intelligent Media Consultants, an Atlanta-based company that helps its clients design efficient and profitable network operations through the creative application of broadcast technology, Hazinski has worked all over the world launching news operations in markets starved for unbiased reporting. “This is really the cutting edge of technology and journalism,” says Hazinski, a former NBC news correspondent who says he and his partners have helped launch at least a dozen news operations in the last 10 years. “These are new markets. They haven’t been exposed to lots of TV.”

Because most of Intelligent Media’s clients are unfamiliar with broadcast news techniques, Hazinski says he is able to tailor unique approaches that maximize their limited budgets. “These people are willing to try new things because they don’t want to pay the outrageous costs associated with news production in the United States,” he says. “Right now, based on what we learned in Pakistan, we’re convinced we can launch a network today for half of what it would have cost three years ago. And no one would see any quality difference on the air - even if we aired it in the U.S.”

At GEO-TV’s main broadcast center in Karachi, Hazinski built a newsroom around 24 Mac G4s running Final Cut Pro. News footage is captured with 40 Sony PD150s and 15 PD100s. NewTek Video Toaster 2 systems are used at bureaus in Islamabad and Lahore to switch between the main broadcast center.
In addition to designing a systems approach for GEO-TV, Hazinski helped teach the station’s staff how to use the equipment and how to produce television news. Greg Pope, a freelance editor and producer formerly with CNN, spent one month in Karachi this summer training GEO-TV’s news staff, which primarily consists of newspaper journalists. “We basically had to convert people from print journalists to TV journalists,” says Pope, adding that he had never taught production techniques in a classroom setting to non-English speaking students. “These print people were basically issued cameras and editing equipment and within months were transformed from pen and paper to this new electronic media. Some of them didn’t even know how to use a keyboard when we started.”

Considering the steep learning curve for the Pakistani journalists, Pope says he was amazed at their perseverance and enthusiasm. “These people are tired of having Western news and government news shoved down their throats,” says Pope, who estimates that he taught 100 people to shoot and edit video. “They want their own voice. They want to represent themselves in their own way.”
But there is still a chance that the government will shut down GEO-TV. Pope says that while he was training the news staff, it was widely believed that there were spies for PTV within their ranks. However, in recent years the Jang Group has won many battles for freedom of the press, so there is hope that GEO-TV will succeed.

“If they have minimal government interference, [GEO-TV] will change the face of Pakistan,” says Pope.

.
However, there is no denying that later on in his regime, he became more and more "dictatorial"; he wanted to control the Army, the judiciary, the media and the policy.

See Army was under his control, however, he did try to control the Judiciary. In recent interviews, Gen. Musharraf has expressed regret over the handling of the whole issue. This is the quality which I appreciate as Pakistani, he accepts his blunders and appologize for his errors.

As far as the media is concerned, I will say that he should have actually done more to control the media via laws. May be I should specifically say the Jang Group instead of media. I will give one example, in one of his interviews, Gen. Musharraf said (in english) that teh West should not ask Pakistan for democracy which it has achieved in hundereds of years. Pakistan is working towards democracy and will achieve that in time (something of this nature). Now Shahid Masood was analyzing this quote on tv and translated as such - humain jamhoriat nahee chaheey, ye kitya keh rahay hain Gen. Musharraf? This is just one example.

I have said this many a times and will state again that Gen. Musharraf is not perfect and he has committed his share of mistakes BUT he is far better than NS and Zardari to lead Pakistan.

Last but not least, Eid Mubarak, a beautiful day in TO thus far.

.
Gen. Musharraf said (in english) that teh West should not ask Pakistan for democracy which it has achieved in hundereds of years. Pakistan is working towards democracy and will achieve that in time (something of this nature).
Reflects his pathetic level of general knowledge and also perhaps of his blind supporters. Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, South Korea, Japan, India, Iran, Bangladesh, Israel and countless other countries have successfully achieved democracy, maintained it and strengthen it in the only past 60 or so years not hundred of years. West is not the only part of the world that has achieved democracy and when West asks dictators to embrace democracy, it does not mean 'Western only democracy' but simple democracy that apparently either Musharraf had trouble understanding or he just wanted to twist and turn the facts as usual.

Shahid Masood is not a translator, he is an analyst and based on the lie Musharraf told (about hundred of year’s requirement for democracy) his analysis is correct. Musharraf was using his hundred of year’s thing as an excuse to actually avoid from democracy. I remember his interview in which he said “If they (West) want democracy, I’ll put that ‘label’ on my Government” and indeed he did that after he instructed General Ehtesham Zameer and his ISI’s political wing to rig the elections and bring PML(Q) into power that eventually gave Musharraf a rubber stamp parliament.

Mate,
Musharraf was about to giveup Kashmir to India. There was a secret deal, that was ready, everything was in place but he could not finish it. Then 26/11 happened and the talks shut down. Musharraf had proposed something on the lines that Kashmir's borders would not be redrawn, the borders would be declared as soft. There would be greater travelling facility for both sides of the border in Kashmir. Simply, this was not just gift us Kashmir that we hold but also giving on platter PaOK.

and you were witness to this secret deal. I am going to suggest your name to the mods as a troll. Nice attempt to derail the thread from original topic to Kashmir.

.
Musharraf, himself has alluded to this secret deal many times. He had been suggesting soft borders for sometime as well.

And how is it that a derailing? The topic still is Kashmir.

As for your complaint, its your wish. But I think you are a fan of Musharraf and dont like to hear anything against him, but the truth is truth.
SSGPA1 is right that we are not discussing Kashmir in this thread. This thread as the title suggests is about the 'impact of media in Pakistan'. There are other threads where Kashmir is being discussed, please post your opinion in those threads.

SSGPA1, please hesitate not to use the report button.

oops, I apologise for deviating the thread then. I request mods to delete those posts if deemed necessary. Thanx for telling it, mate.

MY GOD. WHAT HAVE WE FALLEN INTO?

.
Actually, Geo frequently used to tie up with NDTV and conduct those lovey-dovey Indo-Pak friendship shows. Maybe NDTV and Geo have some kind of partnership. The real story always is in funding. Is NDTV an extension of Geo or other way around? I think its the other way around.

.
Geo is definitely no channel that has no particular interests. It talks a lot about bollywood, never mentions Kashmir, always showing bad stories about Pakistan and not mentioning the good ones - particularly during 2004-2007 when Pakistan was really doing well.

.
So the BBC is also biased about Pakistan?

The BBC is notoriously anti-Pakistan. It routinely publishes Indian media propaganda without independent verification, including Indian media blatherings about Musharraf, events in Kashmir, etc. Most BBC 'documentaries' on the India/Pakistan history are blatantly pro-India.

The BBC was ranting right alongside the Murdoch media against Pakistani students falsely accused of terrorism. A google search of 'BBC India Pakistan' will yield several anti-Pakistan articles parroting the Indian propaganda.

Another zionist conspiracy by the western world to defame Pakistan, is it?

It is more of a neocon agenda to help India.

The standard rhetoric for the delusional - Everyone else is too blame for Pakistani problems except Pakistan.

Only the blind ignore the reality of the Western agenda. It is the Indians who are delusional about their newfound courtship by the West. Attacking Pakistan is a gift by the West to India as part of the Western agenda to prop up India as a regional power.

All problems get solved when you find someone else to blame for it. ;)

Problems don't go away if you don't acknowledge your real enemies. The Western media is at war with Muslims in general, including Pakistan.

http://www.defence.pk/forums/pakistans-war/31811-western-media-s-war-pakistan.html

Please treat that "All-The-World-is-Enemy-of-Pakistan" syndrome of yours.

Correction: The western world wants to build up India as a counter to China. Part of pampering India is to defame and demonize Pakistan. That is why the Western media parrots Indian propaganda.

Don't let it go to your head.

.
The BBC is notoriously anti-Pakistan.

Oh really?

It routinely publishes Indian media propaganda without independent verification,

Maybe because the Indian media does have a certain amount of credibility?

including Indian media blatherings about Musharraf, events in Kashmir, etc. Most BBC 'documentaries' on the India/Pakistan history are blatantly pro-India.

Pro India? Or perhaps the truth.

A google search of 'BBC India Pakistan' will yield several anti-Pakistan articles parroting the Indian propaganda.

The BBC parrots Indian propaganda? Then why does it continue to call terrorists in Kashmir with the moniker gunmen or at worst militant? Why does it continue to use terms like Indian administered and Pakistani administered Kashmir? Why is it that the BBC always uses the prefix of "alleges", or "allegedly" with regards to Indian accusations on Pakistani sponsored militancy/terrorism/freedom fighting in kashmir?

It is more of a neocon agenda to help India.

 Do you know anything at all about the BBC?

The BBC is funded by the British government, however it is controlled by an autonomous board of governors. This autonomous body does not parade a pro government in power line. In fact, during the Iraq war, the Blair government was scathing in its criticisms of the BBCs coverage. A case in point would be the reporting of Rageh Omar from Baghdad during the invasion. Also, It was a BBC investigation which led to hearings on the lack of WMDs in Iraq. The point here is to establish the objectivity of the BBC.

About it being part of the neocon agenda, pray tell, who exactly are these neocons in Britian and what is their agenda? Was Blair a neocon for supporting the Iraq war? But wait...havent i already established the neutral position of the BBC during the war?

Perhaps you mean pro israeli coverage on the bbc? You would be mistaken. The BBC, is one of the few news organizations that are neutral on the issue.

Calling BBC a part of the neocon plot smacks of stupidity. The BBC, along with certain left to centre British newspapers (Guardian for example) - if they were part of the American media - would be shouted down by the neoconservatives, actually most of mainstream America, for "pushing the socialist agenda".

Only the blind ignore the reality of the Western agenda.

There is no such thing as a Western agenda. The West is not a monolithic entity.

It is the Indians who are delusional about their newfound courtship by the West.

Thanks for the reality check, but its not needed. India is not the topic under discussion.

Attacking Pakistan is a gift by the West to India as part of the Western agenda to prop up India as a regional power.

Problems don't go away if you don't acknowledge your real enemies.

Problems will continue to remain until the real enemies of Pakistani society - most of which are within Pakistan - are addressed.

The Western media is at war with Muslims in general, including Pakistan.

 Please stop. You are only embarrassing yourself.

Correction: The western world wants to build up India as a counter to China.

Is that why there are more articles praising China's economic miracle than India's? Most articles on India's economic boom also focus on the flip side of it. This is not true for articles on China. Before you construed this as "Indian whining", let me state that i have no problems with this kind of reporting.

Part of pampering India is to defame and demonize Pakistan.

You're right. The news reports we see on Pakistan are actually imaginary. There are no problems in Pakistan at the moment. The videos of terrorist attacks/army action/ etc/ is actually done by Hollywood special effect artists - after all Hollywood is controlled by Jews - in an effort to demonize the people and country of Pakistan.

That is why the Western media parrots Indian propaganda. Don't let it go to your head.

Can't get that India obsession out of your head eh? Not everything should be seen with an India oriented prism.

You give India way to much importance. Appreciate the sentiment, but it is not needed. We are aware of our place in the world.

.
As a student of political science it is very difficult to ignore Jang group. Jang group is extremely commercial. From the beginning it is “traditional policy” of Jang group not to involve in any political conflict. If you see from the beginning when Jang was Karachi base newspaper, its editorial policy used to be “mathematical balance” one column pro govt and other one criticizing. When people see number of anti govt columns increased that clearly meant that days of that govt were numbered. This groups jumps only when something is “decided” final. This can be retraced from today to any date.

.
We are aware of our place in the world.

Top from the bottom - highest HIV rate in Asia, 40,000 + farmers committed suicide since 2003, repeated failures in the manufacturing of defence platforms and many more. Soon failure in Afghanistan will be added as well.

Indian media and teh govt. are big brown nosers even after FBI showed your REAL place in the Headley case:rofl:

.
So what can we do to tackle this zionist/neocon/w.e propaganda? A humongous majority of Pakistan watches GEO. I really doubt a boycott would work.

NO WONDER MUSHARRAF RAIDED GEO STUDIOS!

What is up with this world?

.
One can't see BBC's stand on Pakistan? It never reported any good news on Pakistan, even when Pakistan was experiencing very good growth around 2004-2007 and only mentioned the bomb blasts or Taliban or Al Qaeda.
