What is "RESCUE" for?

You'll find this on most/all Western fighters:

the arrow is pointing to a button/mechanism that jettisons/releases the a/c canopy so that in an emergency those on the outside can open it and get to the pilot it, for whatever reason, he is unable to do so himself.
