Because my friend is about to give me one of his puppies and I'm not quite sure how to react.
According to some pages, these dogs could become very dangerous if not tutored and trained very well. Hm.

how old is the puppy?
do you have pics of pup or parents? is it pedigreed or non-pedigreed?
If its pedigreed is it hip and elbow x-rayed?
You will still need to socialise puppy at young age. GSD has natural guarding instincts which will show sooner or later, if late then even at 1.5-2 years old, but they show much sooner mostly.

German shepherds are amazing dogs (even though they're too mainstream for my taste 
) that can be a great family members if you treat them well and respect them. Dogs in general are loyal and good creatures (much better than humans IMO) who love their owner/s more than anything else. Love and loyalty in it's purest form.
You should keep in mind that German shephers are guardians in nature so they might get a little bit triggered around people who they don't know and who look like a danger to you and your property but other than that they are not aggressive at all. It all depends on how you raise them, in what enviroment, on your character, on the way you treat the dog. German shephers are one of the most intelligent breeds around and for that they are used by the police forces from all around the world but they can be a great family members too. I think that you will have no problems to raise a great dog as long as you treat it with love and respect like it is your own child and as long as you take care of it (I mean to feed it well, to take it to the vet once in a while and walk it around everyday). You should also be very patient towards it and try not to get mad after every hole it digs in the garden or every object it chews for fun- violence against the dog will only make it fear you and even hate you- eventually it can even go against you. Try not to put a chain on it's neck if it lives in the yard of your house, try to give it a little bit of freedom because it is an energetic type of dog that needs a constant phisical activity. If you live in an apartment just try to play with it more often and walk around everyday. Just try to create a bond between you and your dog. Show the dog you are the master, the leader of the pack but treat it with respect.
ps I don't know you or you family and I don't know where you live and what you lifestyle is but before you take this dog as your pet you should first think of one thing: are you able to raise it well. Is this kind of dog fitting your personality and everyday life? Are you able to provide it with the care it needs?

As the name suggests the breed originated in Germany from the various sheep dogs found at the time. The acknowledged father of the German Shepherd Dog is Captain Max Von Stephanitz. He had experimented with breeding dogs throughout the 1890’s, and had employed many of the ideas that English dog breeders were using at the time. Von Stephanitz also believed however that, "The breeding of shepherd dogs is the breeding of working dogs; and this must always be the aim, or we shall cease to produce shepherd dogs". In 1899 he bought a dog named "Hektor Linkrsheim". He immediately changed the dog’s name to "Horand von Grafrath."
To the Dog enthusiasts of that time, Horand embodied the fulfilment of their fondest dreams. He was of medium size, with powerful bones, beautiful lines and a nobly-formed head. His character corresponded to his exterior qualities. Von Stephanitz and a friend, Artur Meyer, founded the Verein fur Deutsche Schaferhunde, (SV), and Von Stephanitz became its first President. Artur Meyer became Secretary and conducted the affairs of the Club from his home in Stuttgart. They were joined by 9 other Co-founders and subsequently founded the club that was destined to become the greatest single breed club in the world. The SV today has over 100,000 members.
It is believed unofficial imports of the breed had arrived in Western Australia as early as 1904. However it was not until 1925 that the breed’s official Australian history began with the importation of Crufts winner Ito of Fallowdale into Australia. Also on the same boat was Pinkerton Rhoda. The year 1929 saw the founding of the Alsatian Club of Victoria, which is now known as the German Shepherd Dog Club of Victoria Inc. The term ‘Alsatian’ came from Anti German sentiment following the First World War. The British re-named the breed as the Alsatian Wolf-Dog. This was then shortened to Alsatian. Today the breed is known by its correct name as the German Shepherd Dog.
Getting a GSD is simple but maintaining it is a big responability. I would urge you to think thrice before accepting that resposnability.

Not true, they are only disallowed from entering specific areas where prayer, food etc is/happens. We have over a dozen guard dogs in Pakistan...

Good question, just don't bring the dog into sections of the house you eat and pray in. dogs to many in Pakistanis are like a second part of the family.
.Hardcore muslims don't keep dogs, but most normal Pakistanis have no issues with them

Verse 5:4 says "Lawful for you are all good things, and [the prey] that trained [hunting] dogs and falcons catch for you."
Verse 18:18 describes the Companions of the Cave, a group of saintly young men presented in the Qurʼan as exemplars of religion, sleeping with "their dog stretching out its forelegs at the threshold."
Please don't attribute to Islam what your local religious leader has told you without first investigating the matter.
