I'll take "dictatorially selected" Xi jinping over "democratically elected" Trump at any moment of my life. At least Xi came from the grassroots and identity with the people while Trump has been always with the tycoons and detached from the general public.

During the early days when communist seized the power, the leaders were presented with dilemma. How to achieve democracy, when knowing that as soon as elections were held, the rich will be sponsoring political parties, and soon the rich will usurp the people revolution.

As a stroke of genius, Mao came out with the idea of people democracy, to prevent the government from serving the rich, but rather, the government should serve the people. Mao committed his whole life for equality and well being of people.

Today, this system evolve into consultative democracy, where the government enact laws and execute policies based on consultation -- from the peasants to the experts. This is closer to people than anything else.

While in US and most western democracy system, the people has no voice in making policies. All laws were enacted based on inputs of business lobbies and rich people.

The system in China today is more democratic than US, in practice.
