Illegal immigrants aiming to cross the Channel say Brexit will make it EASIER to sneak into Britain because France will no longer try to stop them

  • Mayor of Calais has called for migrant camps in French town to move to UK
  • Natacha Bouchart says Brexit means 'England must take back borders'
  • Currently migrant checks are conducted by British officials in Calais
  • Migrants believe French police will no longer stop them sneaking into UK

Migrants living in the jungle refugee camp in Paris have praised the Brexit vote claiming French authorities will no longer block their passage to Britain.

French politicians reacted angrily to the referendum result, with the Mayor of Calais seeking the removal of the controversial refugee camp claiming the British government should deal with the situation.

Asylum seekers make nightly attempts to sneak on board trucks looking to cross the Channel, but are often intercepted by French police.

Migrants living in the Jungle Camp in Calais believe Brexit will make it easier to sneak into the UK

One Afghan asylum seeker told the Mirror: 'Everything is very tough now, they don’t let people go to the UK. But if the UK is out of the EU, France is going to say, "Bye bye, you are out, now take your refugees".'

Currently border checks are conducted on the French side of the Channel with many migrants living in the infamous Jungle camp.

But now the the understanding, known as the Touquet agreement, between France and the UK has been called into question following Britain's vote to leave the European Union.

And mayor of Calais Natacha Bouchart says she will be pressing for the agreement to be suspended.

She told French broadcaster BFM TV: 'The British must take on the consequences of their choice.

'We are in a strong position to push, to press this request for a review and we are asking the President to bring his weight (to the issue).

'We must put everything on the table and there must be an element of division, of sharing.'

This echoed calls from Xavier Bertrand, the centre-right president of the Hauts-de-France region, who tweeted: 'The English wanted to take back their freedom, they must take back their border.'

Prior to the referendum, a French government minister had warned a vote for Brexit could see migrant camps being moved from Calais to Britain.

Finance minister Emmanuel Macron said in February that the treaty, which was signed in 2003, could be scuppered, telling reporters: 'The day this relationship unravels, migrants will no longer be in Calais.'

There are currently around 7,000 migrants camped in Calais and Dunkirk, many of whom make regular attempts to get into the Channel Tunnel or board a ferry.

Britain and France signed the Le Touquet treaty in 2003 amid tensions over the number of people in camps

Britain and France signed the Le Touquet treaty in 2003 amid tensions over the number of people in camps at Calais.

The deal was the latest in a series that allowed Britain to carry out border checks on the French side of the Channel - meaning papers were checked there and vehicles inspected.

British officials are based on the French side of the channel and cooperation around the eurotunnel terminal was stepped up last summer as the numbers trying to break into the tunnel grew.

Scrapping the deal could see British border checks brought back to the English side of the Channel - potentially allowing people to reach the Kent shore to set up camp while awaiting processing.

There are currently around 7,000 people at the camps with 'roads' handed British-styled names such as Queen Elizabeth II Street.

Immigrants has to be the biggest reason for voting out, let's see if it backfires. Maybe UK will get tougher too.

.
Brexit will give British border guard the license to shoot those trespasser. I am sure many British will agree to tougher measure against illegal immigrant.

.
But what would be the response of border guards of UK ?

What I don't understand is why does the Afghan asylum seeker want to move from France to UK? Is France that shitty? Some of these asylum seekers really don't seem to be grateful at all.

There are a lot of reasons why these people want to join the UK. Such as ;

-The language barrier.
-The fact that many of them have family or their friends already in the UK.
-The fact that UK offers better work opportunities and that if I'm not wrong, you can work there without any IDs. (They are exploited.... underpaid and insecure at best.. dreadful housings...)
-The fact that they apparently offer 'better benefits....'

Even if the UK sends their police officers to Calais, not only to check migrants but also 'promote the advantages of asking for asylum in France',this has little effect. There are some that even prefered to go back rather than staying in France.

UK has paid a price for brexit, and if illegal immigrants try to eat the free cream i think they will bear the heat from free UK now.

.
Do it. That way EU can get rid of those migrants.

.
I think it more accurate to say that "establishment elites" in France are reacting angrily to the brexit vote. That is, until the French people throw them out on their ears just like Cameron was and they elect Marine Le Pen the next president of the republic and she joins the UK in their efforts.

its mainly because first two reasons... you cant work without ids easily anymore and no benefits offered. The idea that people are moving thousands of miles for benefit is stupid.
Prefer to go back to afganistan than work in france? I hope they dont really mean it.. that will upset me if I was french border guard.. :(

Having been to these refugees camps, I asked the refugees the exact same question , and they had no real answer. The majority spoke none or barely any English, I tried telling them about how countries like Germany are more open towards outsiders and at the same time doing better financially. However they were intent on going to the UK. Only God knows why!

Our coastguard have already intercepted many of them and sent back to France. The only other way is through the tunnel ....

Those that landed or are rescued by the british coast guards are being brought to the UK and being processed there.
There are more and more that will try their chances, and we can nothing about them.
+ Add the fact that the UK Border Force is facing severe cuts as it is operating just three of its fleet of five vessels. (According to the Sunday Times.)
And those reported in the news are just the one being intercepted and caught....
The UK has long coastlines and limited ressources, but I guess things will be easier when the brits will take back their border, once they have reached the UK,they will set up camps while awaiting their processing.

You arent allowed to send them back once you have them on your ships. Thats against the conventions. You must bring them to the UK and check their status.

Many have been processed here that is true, and back they will go as well. Not to France, but to their nations. We do need more funding and that happen, after we get back border control.

That's true, a mistake on my part.
