IIT plans to enroll students from Bangladesh

Students from Bangladesh can now look forward to securing admission in Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT), one of the most prestigious and sought-after tech institutions in the world.

The Institutes are planning to hold entrance tests abroad for the first time, including in SAARC countries for the upcoming year. However, Pakistan was barred from it, reports our New Delhi correspondent.

Preparations are underway to conduct entrance exams in SAARC countries and in Singapore and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for undergraduate and postgraduate courses, but Pakistan will not figure in the list, sources said.

"Considering various factors, especially difficulties involved with regard to students procuring visas, it has been decided that entrance tests for IITs may not be conducted in Pakistan for the upcoming year," a senior official said.

Earlier, it had been decided that to attract more talent, the coveted IITs would hold tests in countries like Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia in Africa, Singapore and Dubai (UAE) next year onwards.

Officials said that seats to be offered to foreign nationals would be additional in nature and would not reduce those available to Indian nationals at the IITs.

While the test is to be held in 2017, the outreach programme for the exercise would be conducted earlier.

Well IIT is a very competitive institution. Not too bad if BD students get an opportunity to study there.

Tuition is 5000 USD to 22000 USD Depending on your financial background and caste

Well, they claim to be making extra seats for foreign students. So its my guess that Indians and foreigners wont compete with each other but among themselves.

We have large pools of extremely talented students who can make it to IIT for sure. However, they are likely to try out our own BUET and IBA first. Usually that is what happens unless one has plans to go abroad from the very start.

So they have no funding available? And what are the average entry job salaries?

No. IIT for Indians is very subsidised. I remember my brother studying M Tech in 2011 for 25k per sem including mess and hostel.
However for Foreign students it will be very high. I wont be surprised if its like 2 Lakh INR for an year.

The minimum salary after completing graduation is near about 12000 USD.Average is almost near to double or more than that....Google or Microsoft has history of recruiting from IITs with multi crore (INR) rupees packages

Not sure if foreign students will be funded by govt. or receive scholarships. Though students are offered interest less education loans by banks. salaries range upon the the merit of the student. In general IIT students have demand all around the world, they make it to the best of MNC's and top universities world wide. Companies like google, Microsoft, Facebook recruit students to their US campuses offering a package of 1cr+ but then it is rare and only meritorious students make it.

As long as that happens Indian students will be okay with that.
IIT and NITs already have students from Africa, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Singapore, etc

Yes I am aware of their success in global stage. Even if not the tech giants or facebook, there are other MNC that might be interested in them. However, I am just curious as to what BD students would do after having got in and attained the degree.

Yes but the competition in India is much more. My friends wrote medical exams along with 6cr people in his state in Kerala I believe for 300 NRI seats. The competition there is on decimals. (99.92 gets a chance and 99.91 doesn't if there is one seat left for example.)

IIT is very well known institution, most of the ppl do bachelors in IIT and proceed to complete masters in US. OP does not mention whether is for bachelors or masters. More than curriculum its the academic culture,independence and freedom that sets them apart.

Given that competition is pretty hard, any student selected will be in top 1% percentile and chances of certainty succeed elsewhere is very high.

You dont get it. BD students would most likely not compete with Indians, rather with other foreign applicants if I understand the news correctly. So the pool for competition will be smaller (my guess, for instance, is that 6 cr applicants wont be applying from abroad).

Apparently some universities in Bangladesh have exchange programs with foreign universities. I know of Uppsala in Sweden and couple of universities in Netherlands. They are also fully funded.

Competition for free seat is very high bcos of lower number of seats allocated for that category. But if you are willing to shell 2Cr you can get a seat .

Doubt so, they might have to write the same exam and meet atleast min cut off criteria. If not it will be diluting standards.
