NEW DELHI: As the only non-European B-school to get featured in the top cluster and a climb up to 13th position from that of 19 last year in the Financial Times Master in Management (MiM) ranking 2014, Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta made a significant stride by achieving its highest even global ranking.

The B-school has also been rated as the best globally for Economics and ranked number one among the 70 schools in the alumni careers parameter.

According to a press statement issued on Monday, IIM-C has been ranked 13 in the 2014 FT MiM ranking, post an impressive debut at 19 in the list of 70 B-schools in 2013. This year, it has improved its position by six places from 2013, for its flagship Post Graduate Program. IIM-C is the highest ranked non-European B-school with a prized positioning in the top cluster. With only six non-European schools in the list of top 70, the other Indian school in the ranking is IIM Ahmedabad at 16th place.

A valuable factor in the ranking methodology is Careers Rank under the alumni career progress section of parameters for which the batch of 2011 had been considered. IIM-C ranks number one the careers rank signifying that the alumni has registered the best career growth (calculated in terms of seniority and company size and employee strength) over the last three years in comparison to all other participating B-Schools.

Professor Ashok Banerjee, dean, new initiatives and external relations said: "This is a big day for India, its higher education apart from all associated with IIM Calcutta. FT Rankings is considered the gold standard in B-school ranking and we are indeed happy and proud to make such progress in a single year. This is a significant milestone in our globalisation journey along with our recent achievements including the AMBA, AACSB accreditations and the CEMS membership. The rankings will help us network more closely with the top European B-schools."

FT has devised a concept of clustering. The top 14 schools form the top cluster, with IIM-C belonging in it on rank 13. While 195 points separate the top ranked school from rank number 70, the differences are small within the group. The second cluster includes schools from rank 15-33; IIM-A belongs to this cluster.

Precisely sums up problem with Indian education system. A large proportion of graduating youths in India are just not employable. There is little to no practical training programs as part of the school curriculum. The foundation of education is built around cramming books and not around understanding concepts.
Top tier schools fare much better however. But they represent only a miniscule of the large school/university going populace. Instead of establishing new IITs/IIMs, government should really focus on establishing sound secondary education curriculum in schools.

For a nation with youth the size of India, current number of IITs and IIMs won't suffice. Too little impact. However, if they increase the number, then IITs and IIMs are no longer 'special'. The idea is, forced updated teaching and curriculum all across the board.

Even in UK/USA you have some Universities that are world leading. Like Oxbridge/Imperial/LSE/UCL in UK, MIT,Stanford,Caltech,Harvard,UPenn etc in USA. But the other universities ranked below them are also very good in one way or the other.

It is said that quality of education in a school is nothing but the quality of students receiving the education. Better students make better schools not vice-versa. Instill better secondary education to high school students and you will definitely see an increase in the quality of the universities they ultimately join.
