If a war happens, in very short term China could take control the islands which been held on Viet Nam hands. In mid term and long term, China could keep them safe as it right now. Unless, China has more fleet and carriers like U.S then it could maintain those Islands for a while.

I don't deny that China is 100 bigger for its military spends or even more than that, I also don't deny China country is bigger than Viet Nam 20 times. Even though its economics is still larger than Viet Nam. Overall, comparison China vs Viet Nam just like compare sky tower with 1 story house.

For strategic and tactics compare between China and Viet Nam is difference, whoever has good tactics runs, strategics stable then its win. Plus, China always standing as an Invader so its soldier will not strong fight than Defender soldiers.
