I found these charts interesting and wanted to share them here for a good discussion (without chest-thumping please).

Comparing Indian states and territories with countries

Which countries match the GDP and population of India's states and territories?

How big is Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state? One way of answering the question is to take its total area: 95,000 square miles (246,000 sq km). Another way is to think of it as a country. If Uttar Pradesh were to declare independence, it would be the world’s fifth most populous country (as the map below shows, it has about the same number of residents as Brazil). Yet its economy would only be the size of Qatar, a tiny oil-rich state of fewer than 2m people. That makes it poor on a per person basis. Despite India’s two decades of rapid growth, Uttar Pradesh’s GDP per head is close to that of Kenya. The map below presents country equivalents for India’s states and territories in terms of GDP, GDP per person (in PPP terms) and population.

Interesting thread. India's growth has been driven by only certain regions. Most notably Mumbai. So if we considerthis as a seperate region (a la Monaco)
It has the highest GDP of any city in South, West and Central Asia. At $ 209 bn it is 29th city in the world.
To put things in Perspective Israels nominal GDP is $213.147 billion and Pakistan's is $174.866 billion. So it would be in the top 40 in the world.
It's population of around 21 mn would be close to the population of Sri Lanka but crammed into 603 sg.kms of space.
In short, a small but rich and extremely crowded place.

. . .
I think the Southern states would soon become industrialized nations.

P.S:- Economist does seem to have strange fetish not to show complete J&K as a part of India.

Which city in India is Industrial hub? and which is Agricultural?
