If feasible, Meghna bridge at Shariatpur-Chandpur point to link 21 districts

9 km Karnafuli tunnel is only costing $1.1 billion.
Width of the river at the site of the proposed tunnel is 700m and the water depth is between 9-11m. The length of the proposed Tunnel is 2000 meters.

Please read the map. There is Palong. It is the center of Shariatpur. On the other side of the river, it is Chandpur which I visited many times whe Steamer ships were frequenting Goalondo-Chandpur route.

Note that Palong people can easily use the new Padma Bridge. The same is true for Chandpur people. But, they need a direct road to Mawa.

In my opinion, instead of this bridge a bridge can be built over Bhola to connect east and west of Meghna. This bridge will give shorter access to Chittagong for people living in all the SW Bangladesh. Even there is a proposal to build a bridge to connect Bhola with Barisal. So, if the other half is built, the distance to Chittagong will be greatly reduced.

That is moving too far away from Agartala route - though I admit it is far more logical. Modi pa-chata bandors in Bangladesh will not like it.

There is a Payra to Chittagong passenger ferry service which was introduced. Payra can easily transfer containers to motherships in Chittagong outer anchorage. Items produced for export in Barisal and Patuakhali can get on containers and be exported this way. Lot cheaper to transport containers this way than building a bridge.

It is doable @bluesky bhai, but does the traffic advantage gained justify the expense? Back into the Sri-Lanka unnecessary project situation question.

Of course Hasina has no problem because she (and Obaidul) will get a cut no matter what...

I just do not know what the GoB will do with the technical reports to be prepared by three foreign companies, but I am happy to note the presence of Nippon Koei, a Japanese company.

Any Japanese individual or a company is no-nonsense. Nippon Koei is a very famous civil engineering consulting company in Japan. It deals with bridges, sluice gates, etc.

Note that before Matarbari port project was undertaken, it was Nihon Koei that did the technical feasibility studies over the BoB.

Is it possible that JICA will be asked to fund the project? There are two other countries’ companies are also involved.

@bluesky bhai - JICA funding means feasibility will be typically "led" by Nihon Koei, which has a large office in Dhaka.

Other consulting companies will be roped in as called for re: specialized expertise.
