I don't understand how any person of faith, who is at peace with themselves (which is the whole point of religion anyway, right?) can take so much offense to a cartoon. Cartoons, or even some negative commentary about one's faith shouldn't be anything to take offense at, let alone go on a murdering spree.

People who advocated for free speech understand that it has limitations and never say its is 100%- all or nothing. For example any person in the U.S is free to criticize or even depict Jesus in a bad way. What he/she cannot do is run into a theatre and scream fire when one does not exist.

Opinion is free speech, satire is free speech because if you limit them there where does it stop and what exactly are the redlines. When someone videotapes themselves dancing to the Happy song?

Well the issue is that if you say " Charlie Hebdo did provoke muslims " then it is assumed that you're justifying the attack and if you say "Chalie Hebdo did not desreve it" then you 're bracketed with those who support absolute freedom of speech. But there no absolute freedom of speech and thats the truth.
Pope is doing a good job by trying to bring the nations closer and condemning such acts of terror and doing so without sullying a religion.

i had this debate with some friends over dinner and second-hand smoke yesterday......

you have to look at it from the perspective that many (if not all) Islamic countries tend to be more honour-based societies whereby even moderate people can be offended easily if there is an attack on self, family, or identity. Our Prophet is our honour. He used to face many insults and threats but never saught retribution. Those who kill in his name are going against the teachings in the Quran. At the same time, there are clearly people who take religiosity extreme to heart - leading them to take matters into their own hands

I could make a cartoon about a woman being raped....that's freedom of speech. But its morally bankrupt and quite frankly - disgusting - b/c in the civilized world, making fun of a woman getting raped isn't funny. It's drilled in us that you cant make jokes about stuff like that. You wouldnt make a cartoon about jews choking to death in gas chambers @ Auschwitz. You could - but it would inflame tensions and hurt sentiments.

Am I offended by the cartoons? No, not really (I havent seen them and dont hope to).

Am I dismayed that there are people who are so lifeless (I guess now some of them really are) and who get paid just to piss and annoy people by making offensive cartoons? Sure, I think many of us are.

Do I believe in freedom of speech? Absolutely!!! But it shouldnt mean insulting and offending a certain % of people just for cheap attention
