There are limits to freedom of expression when religion is insulted, Pope Francis has said in reference to the cartoons in the French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo. However, he also pointed out that killing in God’s name is an "absurdity."

Francis spoke to reporters on a flight from Sri Lanka to the Philippines.

Answering questions on the Paris attack on the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, he said that freedom of expression was a “fundamental human right” like freedom of religion, but it should be exercised “without giving offense,” the Catholic News Service reports.

“One cannot provoke, one cannot insult other people’s faith, one cannot make fun of faith,” Francis said, adding that every religion “has its dignity.”

The Pope said that one can react violently when being offended. He offered an example, referring to his trip planner saying that if his “great friend says a swear word against my mother, then he is going to get a punch. But it’s normal, it’s normal.”

However he added that “one cannot offend, make war, kill in the name of one’s own religion, that is, in the name of God.”

Well, the massacre has at least triggered a debate not related to terrorism, which is a win for the perpetrators and their silent supporters.

So how many are you going punch? Sometimes ignoring is good.

See Charlie Heibdo, nobody knew that there is such a newspaper, and even few knew that they published caricature of Mohammed. Now millions of dollars are being invested into the paper. Suddenly their circulation went from 60,000 to 5 million and its a household name across the world. And did it deter them from publishing caricature of Mohammed...no. They have become bolder knowing that people support them.

Balls are pleasure....but sometimes thinking with brain is important too.

Nope, he's one of the most modest popes and unlike other Popes he's friendlier, more accessible, at the same time bolder and brusque at times. But has never made any statement sullying other religions.
He would 've been called secular had he been a politician.

you've got it wrong I guess , Pope also said this "One cannot provoke, one cannot insult other people’s faith, one cannot make fun of faith,” Francis said, adding that every religion “has its dignity.”

i know , it was just a sarcasm post for some posters here ... who believe that Freedom must not have any limits ..
I respect every other faith as much as i do respect mine ...

Dear Pope, and other muslims, stop eating beef, put your money where your mouth is.

Also those pakistanis and bangladeshis who support this logic, please stop insulting Nawaz Sharif and Sheikh Hasina on this very forum, because despite their public role that ''represents something more than their private lives'' they are someone's mother and father too.

if a friend insults his mother sure the pope will sock him in the eye, but he is MOST DEFINITELY NOT allowed to kill said friend.

Pop should stop doing chance pe dance by using this event to control free speech. We'll have the freedom to insult religion including popey in the future too.

does he done anything bad to you ?

He's either a corporate, or some other kind of stooge, but he's a stooge for sure. Pushing mad made global warming, pushing the gay agenda (I don't have a problem with gays, but it makes him unpopular with conservative christians) and now he's preaching BS like 'free speech has limits' etc

I don't understand how any person of faith, who is at peace with themselves (which is the whole point of religion anyway, right?) can take so much offense to a cartoon. Cartoons, or even some negative commentary about one's faith shouldn't be anything to take offense at, let alone go on a murdering spree.

this whole pope francis thing runs on a huuge PR machine, he's just a conduit to push someone else's agenda.
