AMSTERDAM: Dutch coach Ryan Cook believes his team can upset the odds and make it all the way to the World Cup semi-finals, fully deserving their seat at cricket’s top table.
Inspired by star all-rounder Bas de Leede, the Dutch secured their place in India with some eye-catching results.
The most notable was beating West Indies in a super over after equalling a huge total of 374 at the qualifying tournament in Zimbabwe in June.
And Cook told AFP that his team were not going to the World Cup just to make up the numbers.
“We hold high hopes going into this World Cup that we can put in a couple of really big performances and those can result in wins. We’ll be putting everything that we can in to get to those five or six wins to take us into the semi-finals,” he said.
The Dutch open their campaign against Pakistan on October 6 and recently spent eight days at a “spin camp” in India to prepare for the conditions and the bowling they are likely to face.
They have a well-earned reputation as giant-killers at international tournaments, edging out South Africa at the T20 World Cup last November.
Max O’Dowd, the team’s top ODI scorer this year, said the Netherlands have shown they can compete with the big guns and chase down big scores when needed.
“I mean if we go there just trying to get involved and enjoy a World Cup, then what’s the point? We’re going there to try and win every game and hopefully we can do that,” O’Dowd told AFP.
Dutch cricket ‘unique’
Both Cook and O’Dowd said the Netherlands had benefitted from recent fixtures against the top teams but were hungry for more.
It hasn’t always gone to plan. England came to Amsterdam and smashed the record for the highest total in a 50-over game, scoring 498, powered by Jos Buttler’s 162 off just 70 balls in June last year.

“If we can be that team that plays on that main stage more often, we can make strides at the main table for sure,” said Cook.
The Netherlands has good infrastructure, good facilities and can host teams and supporters well, insisted the coach, urging more major nations to tour the country.
“Playing the best teams in the world is something that I think we’ve deserved through the cricket we’ve played, and we just want teams to come here,” added O’Dowd.
The New Zealand-born O’Dowd admitted that Dutch cricket was “unique”, especially at club level.
“One week you could be playing against Punjab on a mat and then three days later you’re playing an international,” he said.
“I think that’s the unique thing about Dutch cricket and I think it actually makes us who we are, makes us play the cricket we play and it forces us to get in uncomfortable situations and it makes you develop fast.”
The Netherlands have not qualified for the World Cup since 2011 and O’Dowd says they are under no illusions as to the challenge they face.
“Obviously it’s going to be very tough. Some of the best teams in the world are there but we’re one of those best teams ourselves,” he said.

Offspinner R Ashwin has replaced left-arm spinner Axar Patel in India's final 15 for the 2023 World Cup*. ESPNcricinfo has learned that Axar, who left the Asia Cup with a quadriceps strain, needs at least three more weeks to recover fully.
Today is the deadline for teams to make changes - no questions asked - to their World Cup squads, as per the ICC's regulations. From tomorrow, any further changes will need the consent of the World Cup's technical committee.
This means Ashwin joins Virat Kohli as one of only two players in this squad who also featured in India's 2011 World Cup winning run.
Ashwin's inclusion has come as a surprise, with things changing quickly. He was not part of the 15-man squad announced by the BCCI in late August. At the time, India's chief selector Ajit Agarkar pointed out that while Ashwin was one of the contenders, the selectors and the team management had opted for Axar, whom they felt provided batting depth. In the Asia Cup, when Axar got injured and returned to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, the BCCI drafted Washington Sundar as his replacement.
Both Washington and Ashwin were included three-match ODI series against Australia that followed, which India won 2-1. That series was the first time Ashwin, 37, had played for India in ODIs in 18 months.

Ashwin is the right choice to replace Axar but India's weak link is Shardul Thakur, who probably wouldn't make the list of either the top 10 batsmen or bowlers in the country but who management seems to play as the fifth/sixth bowler along with Pandya in the first choice XI. None of India's top batsmen bowl and the tail is very long. If India had the confidence that Pandya could be relied on to bowl his 10 overs, it would drastically improve the balance of the side and allow them to include five specialist batsman + Rahul/ Ishaan.

KARACHI: Just a month ago, Pakistan were riding high as the world’s top-ranked ODI team and one of the favourites to win the World Cup in India.
But a crushing 228-run defeat to arch-rivals India and a narrow two-wicket loss to Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup have cast a shadow over their prospects.
This unpredictability is a constant feature for Pakistan, who frequently swing between highs and lows.
Adding to their challenges, the team suffered a major blow with the loss of key fast bowler Naseem Shah, who was ruled out of the World Cup with a shoulder injury.
Nevertheless, team director Mickey Arthur remains optimistic.
“Losing a player of Naseem’s calibre is a massive setback,” Arthur told AFP. “But we have a mix of experienced and young bowlers who are more than capable of stepping up to the challenge.”
To fill the void, Pakistan have recalled experienced pacer Hasan Ali, who has regained fitness after finger surgery last month.
Arthur, Pakistan’s head coach at the 2019 World Cup when they failed to make the semi-finals, is confident the team can bounce back from recent disappointments.
“This is a very capable team that can turn things around. Remember that we were ranked number one before the Asia Cup, and we’ve only lost two games,” he said.
“This team has the potential to go all the way.”
The challenges facing the team reflect the broader issues plaguing Pakistan, including a struggling economy, rampant inflation, and political turmoil, with cricket legend Imran Khan, who led Pakistan to their only World Cup victory in 1992, currently behind bars.
The Pakistan Cricket Board has also seen instability, with three different chiefs in the last 10 months and current leader Zaka Ashraf uncertain about his position.
On the field, Babar Azam faces the dual challenge of lifting the team’s performance and improving his own much-criticised captaincy.
Despite being the top-ranked ODI batter, Babar had a lacklustre Asia Cup, scoring just 207 runs in four matches — 151 of those came against Nepal.
However, Babar remains confident that the team can overcome its issues.
“Our preparation for the World Cup is on track despite our Asia Cup setbacks,” he said.
In addition to concerns about spinners Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz not taking enough wickets, opener Fakhar Zaman — a specialist in white-ball cricket — has been struggling with form.
Fakhar, the only Pakistan batter to score a double century in an ODI, managed just 65 runs in four Asia Cup matches and was on the brink of being dropped.
