Pakistan’s 15 not a formidable combo for World Cup

The mega event in India has a challenging format, with each of the 10 teams playing each other before the semis

KARACHI: With the announcement of Pakistan’s World Cup squad on Friday, it is significantly evident that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the national selectors and skipper Babar Azam have not learned their lessons from the recent Asia Cup debacle.
The 2023 World Cup has a very challenging format, indeed, with each of the 10 teams playing each other before the semifinals. So only best of the best will emerge as the winner this time.

The mega event that commences in India from October 5 is without a doubt the stiffest test of skipper Babar’s career and he ought to have gone in with the best, most balanced 15-member squad for the extravaganza. Alas, it is not to be.

To begin with, Shadab Khan has been retained as the vice captain which defies all logic, especially after his abysmal faring in the Asia Cup matches.

The all-rounder, who until 2020 was dubbed as the next best thing for Pakistan after the prolific Babar Azam, is merely a shadow of himself today.

Though never a great turner of the ball, nor a front-ranking batsman, Shadab was instrumental in many limited over victories for his team as he broke vital partnerships and scored useful runs at crucial moments to see Pakistan through.

Regrettably, he has not displayed any of that flair in the recent matches. And yet, by virtue of his position as the team’s vice captain and his camaraderie with skipper Babar, he has continued to play every game without making any impact of note.

Reports coming out of Pakistan camp during the past few days led many to believe that Shadab will surely be replaced by Shaheen Shah Afridi as vice captain. However, for reasons best known to them, the selectors have retained Shadab as Babar’s deputy.
Recalling the tried and failed Hasan Ali to fill in the shoes of injured Naseem Shah is another glaring move which reflects poorly on Chief Selector Inzamam-ul-Haq and his band of selectors.

Hasan has been in and out of the team in all the three formats during the past few years, mainly due to his checkered performances that have earned the public ire besides scathing criticism from the former players.

In his own admission, Hasan has not lived up to the promise he had shown in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy and is, at best, an average player whose erratic bowling and sloppy fielding could well prove to be a burden than a boost for the team.

Most critics feel that the talented Zaman Khan or hardworking Arshad Iqbal deserved to be selected ahead of Hasan for the World Cup.

Opener Fakhar Zaman’s 14 flop games on the trot have not shaken the selectors’ faith in him, which is extremely surprising, given the swift changes they tend to make in every series.

No doubt Fakhar is a class player but has clearly struggled to find his feet in the recent games. He was all at sea against the medium pacers as well as the slow bowlers in the Asia Cup and it is a huge gamble to go with him for the mega event in India.

Besides, both Wasim Jr and Salman Ali Agha are bits and pieces players who certainly donot possess the kind of firepower to turn a game around on their own.

Mohammad Nawaz, too, have struggled to take his game to the next level which is a matter of concern for skipper Babar. In short, Pakistan’s lower middle-order desperately need to put its act together for the competitive extravaganza for Pakistan to fancy its chances of reaching the semifinals, at least.

Perhaps, a specialist spinner like Abrar Ahmed would have served the team better as he has the ability to keep the batsmen guessing with his fine range of deliveries.

However, one must commend the selectors for keeping faith with opener Abdullah Shafiq, gifted spinner Usama Mir and batsman Saud Shakeel as all of them are specialist players with proven credentials at the international level.

In the final analysis, one would say that Pakistan’s is not a formidable combination at the moment, more so because they have not been able to upgrade their ODI cricket style as per the modern times.

Given all these factors, Babar's men are certainly not among the favourites to lift the title. But the fact that they will be entering the World Cup as the underdogs augurs well for them.

The history has it that whenever Pakistan gets the top billing, they fall short by quite a distance. However, whenever they are written off, they bounce back handsomely to stun the best in the business.

ODI World Cup 2023 winner to receive USD 4 million in prize money

Two million dollars have been set aside for the runner-up

As in 2019, the winner of this year's ODI World Cup will be awarded prize money of USD 4 million. The ICC has allocated a total of $10 million for the tournament, which begins on October 5 in Ahmedabad.

Two million dollars have been set aside for the runner-up while the losing semi-finalists can also bank on a sum of $800,000.

The other six teams will exit the competition at the end of the group stages with $100,000 each, which essentially means everyone taking part in the World Cup are assured of this sum of money. The winner of each league match is also assured $40,000.

India qualified by virtue of being hosts while New Zealand, England, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Australia, Afghanistan and South Africa progressed from the 2020-23 ODI Super League. Sri Lanka and the Netherlands came through the qualifying tournament held in June and July 2023.

This World Cup follows a simple round-robin format with all teams playing against each other for a total of 45 league matches. The top four will qualify for the semi-finals, to be played in Mumbai on November 15 and in Kolkata on November 16. The semi-finals and the final will have reserve days.

The defending champions England and the runner-up in 2019 New Zealand will kick off the competition in two weeks' time. The hosts, India, will begin their campaign against five-time winners Australia on October 8 and then build up to the group stage's marquee clash with Pakistan on October 14. The matches are spread across 46 days and 10 cities with the final scheduled on November 19 in Ahmedabad.

After the recent ICC decision to offer equal prize money for both men's and women's events, this sets the precedent for the next Women's World Cup in 2025.

Pakistan cancel pre-World Cup Dubai trip due to visas delay

PCB confident team will be able to travel to Hyderabad ahead of warm-up game against New Zealand

Osman Samiuddin
22-Sep-2023

Pakistan's plans for a pre-World Cup team-bonding trip to Dubai have been cancelled as the team was still awaiting visas to travel to India as on Friday.

The Pakistan squad was due to fly to the UAE early next week and stay for a couple of days before flying to Hyderabad, ahead of their first warm-up game against New Zealand on September 29. Instead, Pakistan now plan to fly out of Lahore to Dubai early next Wednesday and fly to Hyderabad from there. Although one official said the situation was "alarming", there does appear to be general confidence that the visas will arrive in time for Pakistan to travel. The application for visas is understood to have been made over a week ago.

As of now, ESPNcricinfo understands, Pakistan are the only one - of nine sides traveling to India for the World Cup - still awaiting visas. The delay does highlight the complex and tense political backdrop against which the team is traveling to India. Travel between the two countries for citizens on either side is extremely limited because obtaining visas is an arduous and often fruitless process.

Hasan Ali replaces injured Naseem Shah in Pakistan's World Cup squad

Leg spinner Usama Mir gets a call-up while Faheem Ashraf misses out; Naseem appears set for a lengthy layoff

Hasan Ali last played an ODI in June 2022

Hasan Ali has been drafted in to Pakistan's ODI World Cup squad in place of the injured Naseem Shah, who is set for a lengthy layoff.

Pakistan have also brought in an extra legspinner in Usama Mir, who made his ODI debut earlier this year against New Zealand but was not part of the Asia Cup squad. Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf and Mohammad Wasim make up the remainder of Pakistan's pace attack, while Mohammad Haris is among the reserves. Spin-bowling allrounder Mohammad Nawaz also keeps his place in the side, while Faheem Ashraf misses out.

"Naseem was injured, he was our main bowler and it was unfortunate. [Mohammad] Hasnain has an ankle injury and is out injured and so is Ihsanullah," Inzamam-ul-Haq, Pakistan's chief selector, said on the situation with the fast bowlers. "If you see how Hasan Ali performed in the LPL, or other performances, he has performed better than most. He is an experienced bowler who has played big mega events for Pakistan and performed well in them.

"And when Naseem was ruled out, we needed someone who could bowl with the new ball. He bowls well with both old and new ball, and is a team man. His presence lends energy to the team."

As reported by ESPNcricinfo earlier, the shoulder injury, picked up during the Asia Cup, will keep Naseem out of action for several months, with Inzamam confirming his term of absence would not be confined to just the World Cup.

"Unfortunately, the report we have from our doctors, we hear Naseem will be out for a longer time than just the World Cup," Inzamam said. "At this time, he was the world's best bowler in my view. It's a loss for Pakistan and we hope he's fit soon."

Hasan last played an ODI in June 2022 and last played for Pakistan in any format in the second Test against New Zealand in Karachi in January this year.

Pakistan's World Cup squad announcement was delayed by several days as the PCB took stock of a disappointing Asia Cup campaign where they finished bottom of the Super Four group following defeats to India and Sri Lanka. The board also waited on a second opinion on Naseem's injury, though positive news on that front has not been forthcoming.

Williamson to be selected in New Zealand's World Cup squad

Kane Williamson will be included in New Zealand's 15-man ODI World Cup squad, after having reached a point in his recovery - from a ruptured ACL sustained in last season's IPL - that he admitted looked unlikely in the days after the injury.

Williamson is presently with the New Zealand limited-overs squad in England, where he is continuing his rehab. On August 28, New Zealand coach Gary Stead had said that Williamson had two weeks to prove his fitness for the World Cup and he has done enough to make the cut.

However, exactly when Williamson will be able to return to action is still uncertain, and New Zealand's opening game of the World Cup, against England on October 5 in Ahmedabad, may be too soon.

"Through this entire process, I have tried to keep an open mind on when I might be able to return to cricket and not get too focused on one date or match," Williamson told reporters. "Being selected doesn't change that and I know there's still work to do and day by day goals to tick off to get back on the field with the team."

Williamson called it a "special moment" to have reached the World Cup and added that he was batting at close to 100% in the nets, but some work still remained on his change of direction movements.

"The next month is really key," he said. "It's putting in the work, the training, all those sorts of things. It's been quite motivating putting in the work and seeing some of those little rewards and progress that is required in terms of targeting a specific match. Think it's still more about being fit and ready as soon as possible.

"A lot of it comes down to those quite intricate parts of the leg that you haven't considered before experiencing an injury like this."

He admitted he doubted that the World Cup would be a realistic target in the aftermath of suffering the injury while playing for Gujarat Titans, when he leapt up at the boundary to try and catch a ball that was going for six, landed awkwardly on his right leg, and went down immediately clutching his knee.

"Absolutely, when it first happened probably most people assumed that [missing the World Cup] is what could be what would happen," he said. "But I also didn't want that to dictate how my rehab. I didn't want to be in a rush. But at the same time having a bit of a carrot in the back of your mind is probably helpful...when it first happened and I learnt a little bit more about what it meant I sort of thought it probably wouldn't be on the cards. It's really exciting to be sitting here now and looking at the prospect of taking part."

The rest of New Zealand's 15-man squad will be named in Auckland on September 11.

"Kane has applied phenomenal dedication to his rehabilitation and has been supported by a strong group of experts around him," Stead said. "He's left no stone unturned in trying to get back playing cricket at the highest level. We are delighted to be in a place to select him.

"At the same time, he's also kept perspective about his recovery and hasn't wanted to rush or force his way back too early. As we've previously said, it's great he wants to play cricket for New Zealand in the long term.

"As we've said throughout this process we want to give Kane every bit of available time to aid his recovery. The World Cup is not a short tournament and we will continue to monitor his progress over the next month ahead of the first tournament match."

Fakhar Zaman, Shadab Khan and Hasan Ali should not be in team. The issue with Babar Azam's captaincy is that he doesn't drop his favorite players till the Pak team is out of the tournament.

Hasan Ali was under performing in whole T20 World cup held in UAE few years back but Babar didn't replace him and Pak lost the Semi Final. The same happened this Asia cup when he didn't bother to rest Fakhar Zaman and Shadab Khan who were consistently under performing and Pak came out a loser.

Jos Buttler: It was 'my responsibility' to tell Jason Roy of World Cup omission

'He's a really great mate of mine so it was a really tough call to make', says England captain

Jos Buttler felt it was his responsibility as England's white-ball captain to inform Jason Roy that he had missed out on selection for the World Cup.

Buttler rang Roy last weekend to explain his omission from England's final squad of 15, before head coach Matthew Mott followed up shortly after. Roy had been named in a provisional squad a month previously, but missed all four of England's ODIs against New Zealand due to back spasms and lost his place in the squad to Harry Brook.

It was the second time that Buttler had told Roy that he had missed the cut for a major tournament, after his omission from England's T20 World Cup squad a year previously. Speaking to the PA news agency at a Castore event, Buttler said it was "a really tough [phone] call to make".

Buttler said: "I don't think any time is easy. It's part of the job as captain that is not enjoyable, whether they're great friends or not, it's not a nice job to do.
