Jakarta. PLN has joined forces with Energi Selalu Baru (ESB) to deploy battery swap stations for Volta electric two-wheelers at a number of locations belonging to the state-owned utility firm.

ESB focuses on electric vehicle infrastructure, particularly battery swap stations for Volta motorcycles. Under this partnership, PLN will provide locations in its offices for battery switching stations.

Today, battery swap stations are available in over 250 locations across Indonesia. This is expected to expand more battery switching stations in hundreds of PLN offices. PLN will support its power supply and address any electrical issues in the battery swap stations. ESB will work on developing the battery swap stations and their infrastructure.

In the initial phase of the partnership, the battery swap stations will be available at PLN UP3 Serpong, UP3 Cikupa, UP3 Cikokol, UP3 Teluk Naga, UP3 North Banten, UP3 South Banten, and the distribution unit office (UP2D).

ESB will also help integrate the stations with the one-stop EV digital services on the PLN Mobile app. This will enable electric two-wheeler owners to search for swap stations and make battery-switching transactions on PLN Mobile.

PLN president director Darmawan Prasodjo said that the company is open to partnerships to boost the EV ecosystem.

“This ecosystem will change the paradigm that dirty energy can turn into clean energy. The energy that is once expensive can become affordable, and that energy, which is once imported, can be homegrown,” Darmawan was quoted as saying in a recent press statement.

ESB chief executive officer Iwan Suryaputra said that adding more swap stations would make it easier for Volta owners to swap batteries.

“By partnering with PLN, we can provide a fast and easy battery-switching infrastructure that is in close proximity. This is something needed to accelerate the transition to EVs,” Iwan said.

ESB is a subsidiary of NFC Indonesia and part of the M Cash Integrasi (MCAS) group. The government will grant Rp 7 million ($468) in subsidies for 200,000 units of brand-new electric motorbikes this year. The e-motorbikes, however, must be produced domestically and have at least 40 percent local content. Volta’s electric motorbikes’ local content has reached 47.36 percent.

Jakarta. Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC) is set to produce tens of thousands of battery packs in 2023 as it launched a prototype of its new charging and battery swap platform that is compatible with all electric motorcycles regardless of the brand, according to a government official.

The IBC on Monday launched the battery asset management services (BAMS) upon the realization that a robust charging infrastructure and battery management were pivotal to boosting e-mobility adoption.

E-motorbike users will be able to use BAMS regardless of their two-wheeler's brand and condition: be it brand new or converted bikes.

“With BAMS, IBC is forecast to produce around 21,000 battery packs in 2023. About 15,000 of those battery packs will go to electric motorbikes, while we will put 6,000 others in swapping stations across Indonesia,” Rabin Indrajat Hattari, the permanent secretary at the State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) Ministry, said in Jakarta on Monday.

The BAMS platform will provide integrated charging infrastructure. Rabin added the IBC will partner with electric motorbike producers as well as industry players in two-wheeler conversion for better compatibility and accessibility.

“IBC’s BAMS infrastructure will offer an efficient and reliable battery management solution. By adopting state-of-the-art technology, IBC will monitor the battery health, conduct preventive maintenance, and optimize the charging cycle to extend battery life,” Rabin said.

“This will slash the long-term maintenance costs,” he added.

BAMS is also expected to be a boon for job creation in the technology sector and carbon emission reduction, according to Rabin.

The IBC encompasses four state-owned enterprises, namely miner Antam, mining industry holding Mind ID, oil firm Pertamina, and electricity firm PLN. Each company accounts for 25 percent of the shares at IBC.

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - PT Pertamina (Persero) through Subholding Power & New Renewable Energy Pertamina (PNRE) revealed that the company will prepare an investment of up to US $ 5 billion or equivalent to Rp 75 trillion (assuming an exchange rate of Rp 15,180 per US$) to build an electric vehicle battery ecosystem in Indonesia.

PNRE President Director Dannif Danusaputro said the investment was mainly to prepare electric vehicle battery charging infrastructure.

"We also in terms of EV batteries, we have a target of US $ 3 billion to US $ 5 billion," he explained to CNBC Indonesia in the Energy Corner program, Wednesday (2/8/2023).

Dannif said that the move from conventional motorcycles based on Fuel Oil (BBM) to electric motors is an initiation that requires additional infrastructure.

He said that people who previously bought fuel as fuel would switch to battery swap stations and that would require additional infrastructure.

Therefore, it will prepare the additional infrastructure by creating an electric vehicle battery ecosystem. The company will cooperate with Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC). Pertamina is one of the shareholders of IBC, together with MIND ID, PT PLN (Persero), and PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (ANTM).

"People who used to buy gasoline will switch to charging batteries or swap batteries. We are preparing swap charging infrastructure and also battery ecosystem with IBC subsidiaries. That's an example of us capturing the energy transition in terms of mobility," he explained.
However, Dannif emphasized that the target is a target that is achieved in the long term, so it takes years to achieve.

"This is indeed multi-year and a commitment to set aside Pertamina's annual capex for Pertamina's new business," he said.

ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – PT Mineral Industri Indonesia (Persero) or Mining Industry Holding Indonesian State-Owned Enterprise (MIND ID) continues to pursue the target of building an electric car battery factory or electric vehicle (EV) with a capacity of 15 Gigawatts (GW) in 2027 future.

Main Director of MIND ID, Hendi Prio Santoso said, the company realized the construction of the electric car battery factory through PT Aneka Tambang (Persero) Tbk (ANTM), by becoming the majority shareholder or 51% in a joint venture with the largest EV battery company from China, Cotemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL).

Apart from CATL, the issuer with the ANTM stock code also cooperates with the largest battery company from South Korea (South Korea), LG Energy Solution Ltd (LGES).

Antam's subsidiary that will become a joint venture with Ningbo Contemporary Brunp Lygend (CBL), a CATL subsidiary, is PT Sumber Daya Arindo (SDA). Meanwhile, Antam's subsidiary that cooperates with LGES is PT Nusa Karya Arindo (NKA). In SDA and NKA, Antam will act as the majority shareholder with 51%.

Hendi Prio Santoso said that the strategic partnership aims to realize the target of 15 gigawatts of electric batteries in 2027 while continuing to monitor developments in the electric vehicle market in Indonesia.

“This means that between two and four-wheeled vehicles must be available first,” explained Hendi in Jakarta, Monday (14/8/2023).

This electric vehicle battery mega project, said Hendi, required an investment of US$ 12 billion.
Apart from cooperating with battery companies from China and South Korea, MIND ID is still open to other parties. In fact, it is possible that Antam will carry out corporate actions in the future.

Carrying out the principle of a strategic partnership in the form of a joint venture, both CATL and LGES will own a portion of shares in Antam's subsidiaries, SDA and NKA.

However, Hendi ensured that Antam would become the majority shareholder of 51% each, which is expected to be completed before October 2023. "InshaAllah, before October," said Hendi.

Previously, Antam Corporate Secretary Faisal Alkadrie said, regarding the cooperation between the company and CBL, currently in the process of finalizing the condition precedence of the CSPA agreement.

"It is planned that the CSPA process will be completed in the fourth quarter of 2023, including the final valuation aspect of the cooperation transaction value. Antam will submit further disclosure of information according to compliance with capital market rules after the CSPA is completed," said Faisal.

Just like Antam, Hendi also emphasized that MIND ID must become the controller of PT Vale Indonesia Tbk (INCO). This is because the government wants to ensure that the potential for added value occurs in Indonesia after its development has not run optimally since 2014.
"InshaAllah, (MIND ID) will become the controller at Vale. Please pray and bless. Not necessarily 14% (the acquired shares - outside current 20 % stake already taken) because so far it is still in the negotiation process," said Hendi. (AT Network)

Jakarta. The state of Western Australia says that it wants to help make Indonesia -- its close neighbor that is also abundant in nickel -- one of the key players in electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing, particularly its components such as batteries.

The Western Australian government and Indonesia's business lobby group Kadin not long ago agreed to explore cooperation on the critical mineral supply chain. They even signed an action plan in July as a follow-up to this partnership. According to Western Australian Premier Roger Cook, this partnership will likely see some progress over the next year.

“We are expecting that over the next 12 months to see those letters of intent to lead to strong contracts,” Cook told reporters on the sidelines of the 2023 ASEAN Business and Investment Summit (ABIS) in Jakarta on Sunday.

“We know how Indonesia wants to play a key role in the development of EVs and its other components. Western Australia wants to be part of that supply chain. So we can continue to assist our Indonesian partners to be leaders in EV manufacturing,” Cook said.

Cook said that the resource-rich state had all the necessary critical minerals for battery production.

"We aspire to be an important part of the global supply chain, particularly here in Indonesia. … Western Australia is a strong investment partner for Indonesia and ASEAN in general. … Western Australia, particularly our capital Perth, is closer to Jakarta than we are to Sydney," he said.

Cook is not alone on his Jakarta trip. He also brought a hundred of Western Australian delegates who would have business-matching talks with the Indonesian private sector. And there is a chance for these talks to pave the way for some actual business deals.

A 2023 US Geological Survey report puts Indonesia and Australia as the two countries with the world’s largest nickel reserves, standing at 21 million metric tons, respectively. Indonesia’s nickel mines produced 1.6 million metric tons in 2022, while Australia’s production of the silvery-white metal totaled 160,000 metric tons that year.

Half of the world’s lithium is being produced in Western Australia. It is also a major exporter of nickel, cobalt, manganese, and rare earths. In 2021, all of the country’s lithium production came from Western A
