Israel Aerospace Industries' (IAI) Barak 8, an advanced air defense system, won a technological innovation award in the air defense field. The award was presented at the International Aerospace 2014 conference held on Monday, July 7 in Tel Aviv.
According to the judges, the Barak 8 displayed a definite advantage in two leading areas: the project embodies breakthrough technologies, innovation, pioneering and creative thinking, and is also making a significant contribution to national security.
Barak 8 is developed and produced in IAI. It provides the ultimate protection against a variety of aerial platforms and munitions including aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aircraft and missiles. It is based on a sophisticated missile (in collaboration with Rafael), state-of-the-art phased array multi mission radar, two-way data link, and flexible command and control system. The system is able to operate day and night, in all weather conditions, and successfully deals with complex scenarios in the battle zone, including numerous threats which occur simultaneously.
Barak 8 has a very short reaction time and a fast missile vertical launch capability, supporting 360 degrees coverage. The missile deals with short, medium, and long range threats; its connectivity enables it to be a multi-layer system of systems.
To date, the system has built up significant sales to both customers in Israel and around the world.
Colonel (Ret.) Jacob Galifat, General Manager of IAI's Air and Missile Defense System's Division, said: "Barak 8 is a member of the elite club for Israeli military developments, and is one of the flagships for IAI. On behalf of myself and the project team, I welcome the award. This is indeed a fascinating and effective engineering development that brings us great pride."
