IAF to focus on bombs & air-to-air missiles for edge over Pakistan

If IAF was that Good Why didn't IAF responded? Since they were 2 aircraft down, must have avenged that.
I gave an explanation. With Abhi being caught, used for propaganda and our own Mi17 which was a bigger disaster shocked the conscience of IAF and political circle. It's just 1 mig down anyway, not 2. Unlike Pakistan it's impossible to hide pilots/soldiers death in India nor escape an parliamentary scrutiny. Ispr still don't have an answer for doosra Bandi. Anyway that's not the scope of topic.
Mi17 disaster stopped IAF retaliation after that and priority was given to take back abhinandan.

New Delhi: The Indian Air Force (IAF) is looking at regaining its edge over its Pakistani counterpart in air-to-air missile capabilities that was “allowed to slip” amid a “struggle” to acquire them in a process that has lasted 15 years, Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhaduria said Friday.

In a frank conversation on the takeaways from the Balakot air strike and the subsequent dogfight on 27 February 2019, the IAF chief said the force is not just depending on the Rafale aircraft and its weapons to regain the edge but also on other missiles, including indigenous ones.

He was speaking at a seminar organised by the Centre for Air Power Studies.

When Pakistan launched Operation Swift Retort, their F16s were armed with the Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missile — AMRAAM — which has higher capability than that of the R-77 used by the Su 30 MKI and the MICA used by the Mirages.

This meant that while Pakistan could hit Indian aircraft in air from BVR, the Sukhois and the Mirages could not.

Rafale to tilt scale in India’s favour
The 36 Rafale fighters that India will operate come with state-of-the-art radars and unmatched BVR capabilities. They will also be armed with the Meteor air-to-air missiles that have a range of 150 km. This means that a Rafale can take out an enemy aircraft 150 km away, in effect without even crossing Indian airspace.

At present, neither Pakistan nor India have missiles to counter the Meteor, which tilts the scale in India’s favour.

“We had the edge over the Pakistan Air Force in terms of Beyond Visual Range Missile capability at the time of Kargil. We allowed that to slip and thereafter it took a decade-and-a-half of struggle with the acquisition process to be able to get better capability,” Bhaduria said.

He added that the BVR capability will soon materialise with the induction of the Rafale. The first four Rafales will land in India in May.

The IAF chief underlined that in air engagement, especially in a deeply-contested area, it is important to have an edge in weapons.

“Once we retain this edge, it is important that we don’t allow it to slip,” he said.

The IAF chief further said that the force cannot depend on the Meteor alone to meet the requirements and so is looking at other systems too.

The trials for the indigenous air-to-air missile Astra has been successfully completed and is now being inducted. The plan is to increase the range further, sources said.

There are other systems too that India is eyeing, sources added.

‘We struck at the heart of terrorists training camps’
Speaking about the Balakot air strikes, the IAF chief said the government took a “tough and bold decision” to strike at the heart of terrorists training camps deep inside Pakistan.

He said that the successful strike proved how air capability can be used for non-conventional warfare as well.

Even during Kargil, the then government did not allow the IAF fighters to cross the LoC since it was always felt that the use of air power could be escalatory.

“The IAF successfully struck the chosen target. The Pakistan Air Force responded 30 hours later with a large package of aircraft under Operation Swift Retort. IAF ensured they weren’t able to hit targets,” Bhaduria said.

“They were in a hurry to disengage after being surprised by our response. They were doing it for their domestic audience.”

‘Strong will of government necessary’
Speaking at the same seminar, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Bipin Rawat said if the military has to be prepared for the tasks assigned to it, “then it’s important we maintain credible deterrence at land, air and sea at all times”.

“Deterrence comes from keeping every personnel trained and motivated. The credible deterrence comes from the will of the military leadership and intent of political leadership while taking the tough decision,” he said. “This was amply shown after Kargil and the Uri and Pulwama attack.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the security scenario has completely changed in the last few years.

“Kargil and incidents of cross-border terrorism are examples of new kind of warfare,” he said. “Hybrid warfare is the reality of the present day. There is no clear beginning and end in this changing scenario of conflict.”

He further said that for Pakistan, employment of terrorism against India is a low-cost option. “We have taught a lesson to Pakistan on this. Through Balakot, we have indicated that terrorist camps across the Line of Control are no longer secure places for terrorists,” Singh said.

What m i reading. I thought India has a huge edge. They took out our frontline f16s with retiring bisons and our AMRAAM cant touch them due to some out of the world manuvering.

Sonds like an admission of IAF *** getting kicked.

The same reason now mig 29 (upgraded) fighter deployed in j&k after this incident....
That's nuts. Despite 3 wars, despite Kargil and despite knowing the impending threat of retaliation from Pakistan after botched airstrikes inside Pakistan, the professional, renowned Indian Air Force still needs Pakistan to teach her lessons in what assets to acquire and how or where to deploy them! WTF!?

.
IAF to focus on long range missiles after 27th feb 2019??

What was all that Boasting about a two front war after operation Gagan Shakti by the Indians than???

I remmeber Indians were boasting about highest sorties, aircraft availbilty and operational awarness and preparation. Indians were claiming to destory Paf in 3 hours and than taking down plaaf.

I guess none of them realized they had short range missiles and rafales to save them??

On 27th Feb 2019 Paf byched slapped the Indians and woke them up from their bollywood slumber and now they dont even talk about a two front war.

Unlike Pakistan it's impossible to hide pilots/soldiers death in India nor escape an parliamentary scrutiny. Ispr still don't have an answer for doosra Bandi.
Soldiers Martyred in the line of duty are called Shaheeds here. They sacrifice brings honour to their families back home. People respect them as family of Shaheed.
Its impossible for Armed forces to hide their dead men. We are not living in 1980. By accusing ISPR of hiding dead pilots, you are implying that F16 went down. And you have no proof to back your claim. This F16 thing has been discussed to death here. Bring solid proof or stop it.
Local People always reach before security forces at the site of downed plane. Everyone has smartphone. First thing they do is shot videos and pics which are immediately uploaded to social media. Abhi was greeted by locals first not Pak Army.

Why an Indian Airforce Mi 17 helicopter was flying in a most deadly air warfare zone with 7 crew members at that specific time? What were they doing ? What were they trying to locate ?:coffee::coffee::coffee:

There used to be a time not too long ago, indians used to say that they don't even consider Pakistan a threat any more they're way ahead of us and their focus is on China but than you look at these articles coming from India these days and laugh at how delusional they were.

There is a reason we have a large number of AWACS. Thunders or F-16s will never face IAF alone.
PAF AWACS lack aerial refuelling capabilty, all of IAF AWACS can refuel mid-air.

Why an Indian Airforce Mi 17 helicopter was flying in a most deadly air warfare zone with 7 crew members at that specific time? What were they doing ? What were they trying to locate ?:coffee::coffee::coffee:
They were flying to Kupwara on a daily supply mission.

Unfortunately, India can’t find anything as potent as PL-15 which has led even USA to come out of AIM-120D circle... AIM-260 still some years to go....

@Beast kudos to China on this one..
PL-15 is quite inferior to Meteor, it's NEZ is just half of Meteors NEZ.

AIM-120D NEZ is only 35 km whereas Meteor is more than 70 km.

If IAF was that Good Why didn't IAF responded? Since they were 2 aircraft down, must have avenged that.
IAF lost only one 40 yr old MiG-21.

.
Su was downed by a BVR however when it came to situational awareness and closed situation the EW capabilities were also critical... Therefore one should have good equipment + skill in all departments rather than only focusing on a plan and missile

. . .
Mi-17 was our own kill so does not count.
And no Su-30 got a scratch, which is why PAF failed to provide an iota of proof for their Su30 claim.

So why did IAF flew a SU30 in a ceremony with the call sign "Avenger 1" only after when it was mentioned by PAF.

plus why this "Agar Rafael hota to " thing??
if Su30 was not Downed then why you need Rafael to counter PAF. because as per Inidans Su30 was mini AWACS,
and after getting upgrades it will be more capable then any other 4.5+ Gens.
"Why O Why"

.
Bombs and air-to-air missiles, the air-to-air missiles need good competent, trained pilots and seems as though IAF has short supply of them...Abhi none done will tell this.

The full sentence from Modi was "If Rafale was thr, the Result will be much better" pointing to the past UPA govts which didnt focused on military procurement.
Pakistani on other hand is taking this as some kind of win lol.

This means instead of Mig-21 countering F-16 and Mig-21 loss would not b thr... Rafale would be thr if past UPA govt did their job for military modernization to a media audience for his 2019 election.

Su-30 MKI has better:
Radar
ECM
Strike Package
Maneuverability

than F-16 BLK 52

and is on par for BVR missiles
R-77 is near peer of Aim-120C5 ...

only 2 Su-30MKI were countering dozen of so PAF fighters when F-16 panicked and fired
and basically wasted thr BVR load of Aim-120C firing from DMAX ranges.
