IAF to Buy 83 more Tejas fighters from HAL instead of foreign jets, CDS Rawat says

Agreed! We should not waste our money to purchase any new aircraft from other country.

If possible, we should get additional 36 Rafale fighter and focus on HAL Tejas mark 2. Time line is very crucial this time now.

For 5th generation fighter plane we can wait till 2030..

Cost of 36 more rafales will be around $10 billion. That's the same as producing about about a 100 foreign jets in India through license production. There is simply no point in purchasing 36 more rafales. If they do so, they are a bunch of idiots.

Wrong!! It will be less compare to what we are paying now.

Considering how much time it took to make tejas (40 years) I think AMCA will be in prototype stage till 2060 and mk2 by 2040

smainly due to the Lack of Infrastructure, Change in requirement after the design has been frozen.

Electronics - Radar, flight control systems and Sensors.
Radar - DRDL started to develop the radar and unable to complete mainly due to the lack of ASIC and FPGA's availability here Israel comes they provide the necessary IC with implementing the Indian logic's, same of the flight controls(Used the Lockheed facility after sanctions all work lost) and Sensor modules needed the high-performance ADC's (analog device and TI processors)

Engine: Mostly delayed to due to alloys and crystal development, and lack of the engine test beds & simulators and wind tunnel facilities.

Next project AMCA has been fast-tracked, already funds are allocated in
2015 - 2016 budget 15000 crores and in 2019-2020 its added 21000 crores.

Still lacks the high-speed wind tunnels which is needed for AMCA, ISRO'S AVATAR RLV, BHRAMOS Missile developments.
The amca Hyderabad facility which started construction in 2017 has now been completed.

And why will the cost of the next 36 be less? Cost of the first 36 rafales was $8 billion Euro(Around $9 billion). Taking inflation into account and fall of Indian rupee, it will easily be $10 billion for the next 36, probably even more. Is Emmanual Macron your cousin that you think he'll give you a special discount? Just stop ranting, you have no fuckin clue. Even if it is less, it will be lesser by a few hundred million. Not worth cancelling a make in India deal for 110 foreign jets with TOT if you have $10 billiion to spare. Either just focus on Tejas and forget about Rafale or go for the foreign jet deal. Anything else is simply stupid.

Actually, you don't know that what actual packages included in the deal. I have very close link with one guy who are working in iaf headquarter in Delhi.

I could say that the Rafale deal is very Worthy and there are some genuine reason for high cost. But, if we will go for next 36 aircraft then it will be cheaper.

Also i would say that you need such a aircraft in your inventory to develop your own new aircraft's.

This is a win win for everyone in the region. Modi gets points for make in India, creating local job and patriotism. InAF gets a much needed replacement for a it's aging jets and Pakistan doesnt need to get pressured into a arms race as won't need a stop gap jet to counter disbalance.

Is MMRCA 2.0 Deal dead?
if yes then its
Good for PAF. Road to F-16 bk-70/72 has been clear.
also remaining 76 f-16s will get viper upgrade.

Only the block 52 can be upgraded to block 70/72
The majority of PAF fleet was block 15
This version can only be upgraded till block 40/42

Yaar, why you don't understand that you need to have infrastructure to develop such a aircraft.

Even If Pakistan will start to develop their 1st made fighter aircraft then you also need to start from scratch. India was doing as same as assembling job from last 50 years but it would not help much.

If I talk about infrastructure then It includes: Aircraft design process, Wing design, Wing configuration, wind tunnel, Fuselage. etc.... I did not mentioned about even 10% of whole process.
----------------------------

So, now we have it! It will not take much time for any other new aircrafts in India
What are you talking about....80% is imported parts assembly under gora supervision and still things are not working out.

Good atleast much smarter to invest in domestic industries even if the fighter is only 75% as capable as western counterparts. Eventually you invest enough money into buying these planes that HAL could use some of the profit to reinvest into R&D. Down the line build something more capable... With all the $$$ India wasted buying foreign equipment it could have a domestic weapons industry close to Chinas level.

Seems like HAL is starting to learn from KAMRA. Better late than never :D

Don't reinforce the failure - a supreme military dogma....

Pakistan got 5 major victories from this announcement:
1. Western trust in Indian defense procurements is reduced
2. MMRCA threat is replaced with manageable Tejas
3. Tejas is unfinished direct competitor to JF17 while JF17 is already on Block III
4. Pakistan will have more JF17's than India will have Tejas since Pak had head start
5. Now Pakistan can focus on just JF17 and doesn't have urgent need to splurge on a new jet to counter MMRCA. If PAF does buy a new jet, it will give edge to PAF over IAF since MMRCA is now dead.
Plus, now full throttle on Pak's 5th gen fighter by getting as much outside cooperation as possible. A good news from TFX is that the engine problem has been straightened out by using GE's F16 engine, which is produced in Turkey under license....

Plus plus, Pak might now get their F16s upgraded to 70/72 standard along with getting used F16s and upgrading them. The US needs as much business as possible due to the coronavirus...

this is slightly troubling news. any western fighter would have costed a lot, with small numbers being inducted, leaving little behind for r&d on local stuff, would also have caused logistic issues due to costs. a local fighter means more numbers for a lower cost, and as KaiserX said, more money for improving it.

ice to see West got burned by India. They won't fall for it next time. Pakistan should take full advantage of their misfortune by seizing the moment and making those defense companies an offer they can't refuse.
must not go for complete systems, only for sub-systems and components, integrate the systems ourselves. design the top level system ourselves.

The V upgrade is a package for all F-16 blocks, similar to MLU package where PAF F-16A/Bs upgraded to F-16AM/BM. Block 70/72 can only be bought new but the "V" Viper upgrades have the same radar and avionics.

Nevertheless now with pressure off from a arms race between InAF and PAF I think PAF should stick with existing plans, no need to spend on new Blk72s. F-16 upgrades can be delayed as previous upgrades aren't too old and still have some life. The Turks are working on their own F-16V style upgrade as well we can join them if US doesn't allow when needed. Let's let the economy recover a little and concentrate on domestic defence projects till then. Funds can be better earmarked for Project Azm now.
