IAF to Acquire Stand-off Missiles from Global Market

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has decided to add more lethality to its advanced jet fighters by complimenting them with stand-off missiles. A request for information (RFI) to global firms has been sent for stand-off missiles fitted with light warheads which can target enemy planes.

A stand-off missile is a ballistic missile which can be launched at a distance sufficient to allow attacking personnel to evade defensive fire from the target area.

According to IAF, these stand-off missiles can be very lethal when linked with airborne early warning and control systems (AWACS) that provide inputs on enemy missiles and aircraft beyond visual range. Since IAF has AWACS capability, the addition of stand-off missiles will give a decisive edge to the forces. They will be fired from beyond visual range and will enable the security of the fighter jets by remaining out of the offensive range of the enemy aircraft.

As per the RFI, the IAF has specified that it requires a high-accuracy, precision strike weapon to avoid collateral damage. The missile should have a guidance system for both its midcourse and terminal stages after being launched. Besides, the missile must be a day-and-night weapon with all-weather operational capability. In addition, IAF is looking for a ground-based training simulator along with multi-media training packages, dummy training missiles, captive training missile pods and storage-cum-maintenance infrastructure.

Currently, IAF’s MiG-29 and Su-30 jets operate Russian-origin R-27 medium-to-long-range missiles and the R-77 medium range missiles. The IAF’s need to procure long-range air-to-air missiles has become more pronounced since it is increasing the number of Sukhoi aircraft in its fleet, apart from upgrading the MiG-29s.

As for the state-run Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), it is planning a host of missile tests in the current year. Almost 10 missiles, including the country’s first intercontinental range ballistic missile (ICBM) Agni-V will be flight tested this year. Besides the sophisticated K-15 earlier, the test of other projectiles that are in the pipeline include advanced air defence (AAD) interceptor, Agni-I, Agni-II, Prithvi air defence (PAD) interceptor, BrahMos, Prithvi, Astra and Agni-V. Amongst these, the debut test of the 5,000 kilometers range Agni-V, a China-specific missile, will be a major event. It is scheduled to be test-fired in September.

.
how they going to integate weastern missiles on russian systems , they are not compatible as i thought !!

. . .
Options are -
1. Novator K-100 - 200km+,

2. MBDA Meteor - 100 km+,

3. R-37 (AA-13 Arrow) - 150km+,

4. R-77 (AA-12 Adder) - 80 km+,

5. AIM-120C/D AMRAAM - 70 km+

Range are as per Wikipedia.

.
The article is from april and if at all, they aim to integrate it at MMRCAs, or Mirage 2000s/LCA, so Scalp as a common missile would be a great idea and a good alternative to Brahmos. The question is, are they searching for missiles with propulsion, or for extendend range weapons with wings like JSOW, or HOSBO, which should be cheaper.

Guys IAF is looking for long range stand-off missile rather than a normal BVR like the one mentioned above :
AGM-158 JASSM :
Operational range >230 mi (>370 km)
AGM-158 JASSM - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

.
The author of the article made a mistake. If they are talking about stand-off missiles then India isn't looking for BVR's A2A missiles. They are looking for A2G missiles.
The best options would be:
SLAM-ER
Taurus
JASSM
SCALP/Storm Shadow.
Taurus seems like the best option, but its expensive as hell! 950K euros.
SLAM-ER is 500K
SCALP-EG - 800K
IF This purchase goes similar to others then the US should win if they offer the SLAM-ER as it would be the cheapest.

.
The Diehl BGL manufactured MBDA HOPE/HOSBO and the Raytheon JSOW-C are great stand-off weapons.

.
Is SCALP/Storm Shadow and German Taurus offered to us in MMRCA ?? Tauras has longer range than 300 km but SCALP/Storm Shadow does not and it could be easily sold to us without any problems...

Stand-off missile means exactly what you said.....

Two lines are contradictory to each other. May be IAF sent RFI for LRAAM(Long Range Air-to-Air Missile) and LRSSM(Long-Range Standoff Strike Missile) as well.

If at all, India will get the range limited export versions, so 300Km is the limit, just like Brahmos. Taurus will be very difficult to get, because Germany and Sweden developed it and both countries are not selling these kinds of weapons normally, especially with their laws to not provide weapons to countries in conflict areas.
The US weapons will not be available for licence production and I doubt that JASSM, or SLAM-ER will be offered.
Storm Shadow / Scalp seems to have the best chance, although I'm not sure if a licence production would be cleared.

300km is enough for current battle scenario. We need to go with indigenous longer range versions of cruise missiles like nirbhay but air versions will weigh more.
If EFT selected germany will not feel much pain to sell such missiles, and more over saab is still offering Gripen NG apart from MRCA deal.
U r right US will be not interested for licence production of those missiles as MRCA is lost. Else it wouldnt be a different scenario. US tried to offer F-35 in MRCA but being feared they may lose they withdrew their plan. Not sure otherwise.
