What's new

IAF orders more Tejas LCAs to replace MiG-21s

Hi gogbot, can you please enlighten us about any indegenous UACV programme.....thanks

There isn't much Info On the UACV specifically. Other than the fact that DRDO is working on developing them

But Once we have Medium range UAV.
and the LCA program can produce both the Engine and Radar

DRDO has openly admitted that it planed to use the Kaveri engine and Multi-mode radar in UAV.

Combine all that and you you get a medium range Light Bomber UACV.

Given its experience with unnecessary Criticism with regards to the LCA.

I doubt we will ever get as much Info in regards to Ongoing projects again. Better to Just announce tests.

Well, We have our LCA ready as of now with Engines and Radars Imported from US and Israel respectievely... But We should not forget that Kaveri is finished as well and is taken to Russia to check High altitude testing by replacing an Engine from IL 76 And replacing it with kaveri, and gonna test it with that....

Next HAL produces 15 sukhoi 30 MKI every year, and It LCA can be produced at a rate of atleast 20/annum as we dont have much speculation about our own product..... Mig 21's wil be completely replaed by LCA MK1 and MK2.... Around 200-250 LC's are a very good in number, Currently Bangalore has taken up the charge of manufacturing LCA, so other division must take up the responsibilityu and fasten up the proccess.....

If India can do that, IAF will be a perect one.

We have no doubts about the MCA as our pople hve gained enough knowledge from LCA.... So MC will surely rock as we are a member in the FGFA programm as well...

Why have IAF only order 2 Sqds

They have 200 mig21s today.

They need 200 LCA = 10 sqds.

Wats the wait ??

LCA mk-2 would comprise most of the other squadrons.

But with the induction of 200 MMRCA planes.
Combined the LCA and MMRCA plane will replace all the migs except the Mig-29.

they better have started working PROFESSIONALLY on MCA rather than their usual pace because if there is more than 5 yrs gap between fgfa and mca then theproject itself has possibility to be cancelled...
by the way do you think mca can have some inputs from fgfa program considering the fact that we are partner in this also..

The average Development cycle is 10 years today.

It used to be 15 years. Its not about working professionally but about working with what you have. If You think DRDO is to blame for all the problems. Then that's not true. If the GoI sanctioned 10 billion dollars for the LCA programe in the first place we wouldn't have had any delays.

It took them €39.6 billion to make the Rafael.
The total programme cost, as of 2008, is around €39.6 billion, which translates to a unit programme cost of approximately €138.5 million. The unit flyaway price as of 2008 is €64 million for C version (Air Force), and €70 million for the Navy version.

And 20 billion pounds to make the Euro-fighter.\
In 1988 the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Armed Forces told the UK House of Commons that the European Fighter Aircraft would "be a major project, costing the United Kingdom about £7 billion". It was soon apparent that a more realistic estimate was £13 billion. By 1997 the estimated cost was £17 billion; by 2003, £20 billion, and the in-service date (2003; defined as the date of delivery of the first aircraft to the RAF) was 54 months late.

(Rafael has naval version so greater cost.)

HAL and DRDO had 3 billion dollars to work with.

If you really want An aircraft of the top quality with no delays. then lets fork our Billions of dollar's as well.

and stop commenting on the DRDO as if you know better then them

i wonder how much they have alloted for mca... work is even started or not????

According to this 2004 report, the design work's on the MCA has already been started !

DRDO to develop new fighter aircraft

June 05, 2004 00:39 IST

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has initiated talks with the Indian Air Force to design and develop a Medium Combat Aircraft (MCA), a fifth generation fighter plane.

"We have started drawing (designing) the next generation Light Combat Aircraft, which we call as Medium Combat Aircraft (MCA). We are in a dialogue with the users (IAF) to find out their design specifications," Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister and DRDO Director General V K Aatre told reporters in Bangalore on Friday.

"Sooner or later, perhaps, in a decade or so, we should build our own twin engine aircraft," he said.

The single-engine Light Combat Aircraft, called Tejas, is a delta-winged, tailless, fly-by-wire, supersonic fourth generation fighter under development by the Bangalore-based Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA).

The fifth generation fighter will be powered by two indigenous thrust vector Kaveri engines and is likely to have stealth capability. The Kaveri engines, developed for the LCA, are under developmental trials.

if we remember the mock-up model of MCA in AI-09...

Then we can say that MCA project is very much active from 2004-05..

Now it is depend on DRDO/ADA/HAL to get or develope the technologies for MCA... and that is also in time 2017-2019 date line mention during AI-09..otherwise MCA will also meet the fate of LCA..:frown:

I dont know if we can make that Deadline.

Our primary problem is the engine.
With the Kaveri still not achieving 99% of its desired trust.

The MCA does not have an engine, yet.

The plan was to use a heavily upgraded version of the Kaveri in the MCA.

This would undoubtedly be the Kaveri Mk-2 or something.

We have yet to even try and accommodate TV or SC into the Kaveri.

At best The MCA will make first flight around 2020. At least an MCA using the KAveri.

All other technologies required for a 5th gen aircraft, India alredy has a technological base to work with.

to hell with kaveri.... it has already delayed lca...
later versions of mca can have kaveri-mk2 or mk-3.. if everything else is in place then we should go for foreign engines rather than than waiting again for it....
however lets hope for the best and it will be perfect if we have our engine in our own aircraft....
looks like a beauty in pics..........what say.........

Of all the hard work and knowledge earned and investment done on project LCA, I don't think fgfa should replace lca. 200-230 mig 21s, 16-20 harriers, 55-59 mirage 2000s all of them would be on the verge of replacement by 2020-2022; that's 280-300 fighter at the most..a single fighter like LCA mkll can take over the work load from these old horses with many indigenous and french/israel inputs as well will turn out to be a potent fighter Jet easier to maintain one single large fleet hassle free.
300 LCAs (Air Force and Naval role replacing mig21, harriers, mirage 2000)
300 MKIs appx (upgrade status to SU-35)
200+ MRCA (later on MIG 29s can be replaced with more MRCA)
200 PAK-FA I believe not more than 200 PAK-FA would be acquired by IAF (maintaining stealth Jets is not an easy business lots of $$ would have to be spend to keep them air worthy consuming budget to large extend)

Yes fgfa if flies off from the paper could replace all squadrons of mig 27s and Jaguars..

I think as per the report lca fitted kaveri engine by next yr. Kaveri already passed & clear at high attitude in Russia with IL-76. I admit that it is under power for lca but with the jv from snecma or import core from EU country we can create thrust around 120kn with import core or jv from snecma next 5-6 yr and completed. We can start from making TD with kaveri-mk-1 (80-85kn thrust) and start testing as like lca (f404) for IOC and then for Foc we can use kaveri-mk-2 around (120-130kn thrust)

FGFA and PAK-FA are the same aircraft! RuAF will employ single seater PAK-FA while the Indian version with two seats, inhouse developed avionics, FBL FCS and many other bells and whistles satisfying IAF needs will be named the FGFA.

MCA is apparently what is supposed to be the indigenous replacement for strike aircraft - Mig-27s and the Jaguars.

Two different aircraft, different airframes, different technologies.
