Have you been wondering about the increased movement of jets over Bengaluru skies lately? This is in preparation for the Indian Air Force’s Operation Livewire, which is being described as the ‘mother of all exercises’. The induction for the war-games begins on Tuesday.

With the Operation Livewire, India will fly into the elite club of the US and Russia, which are the only other countries to have conducted such war drills. Livewire – the first-of-its-kind wargame by the IAF – will involve all bases and commands, including the Yelahanka Training Command, and will be conducted between March 16 and April 9. The biggest operation in the history of IAF involves the entire force and aims to evaluate the integration of every platform in a full-scale war operation.
The IAF, the fourth largest in the world, inducted many new platforms recently and needs to validate each of these individually. The exercise was to be held in March last year, but was put off by a year as the IAF was waiting for new inductions to be integrated with the existing system.
“The kind of transformation that the IAF has gone through in the recent past makes it essential for the force to check its technologies, machines and war strategies. The idea is to check the integration of the newly-acquired platforms and network-centric warfare systems with the existing fighter fleet of the IAF,” said a senior IAF official.
“The exercise is to check our preparedness for a war, fought on multiple fronts in both conventional and unconventional warfare. Livewire would be helpful, as the integrated aerial games would help us see how well each command functions and how efficiently they are integrated in a simulated war operation,” he added.
For the wargame, the IAF will deploy the entire fleet of its frontline fighters, including Sukhoi Su-30 MKIs, Mirage-2000s and Jaguars. Recent additions – transport aircraft C130 Super Hercules and IL78 – will be part of the exercise. IAF’s AWACS will control the entire air operations.
Livewire is the second big exercise of the IAF this year after the recent Iron Fist, a firepower demonstration near the India-Pakistan border.
