IAF finalises order for 10 C-17 strategic airlifters

Even if it becomes a success it would only be through Navy, as it could be used as a replacement for Dornier
No his number is correct for Saras but you are also right that its actually a replacement for Dronier in IN and ICG.

MMRCA shortlist by this month end and
C-17 deal by this month end
Many deals will be finalized this year. Those attack chopper and 197 light chopper and M777 light howitzer and ATGM deals are also very close to closing. Most probably within the first half of this year.

i think F-18 is out of MRCA
I hope so.

i think the competition is still on for heavy lift helicopter
Everything is over but negotiations and orders has to be placed. I think by the year end, this will be done.

i think the craze of arm purchase will start new arm race in the region
These are just the airlift capability modernization. This was necessary as our fleet was getting older and older. Its better to buy new before any accident occur. We are trying hard to maintain our present fleet of aircrafts forget about increasing.

nice move by goi.. hope they induct a lil more.. and yeah even i think american jets r out of mmrca esp. after the havoc in parliament today of u.s. interference in indian policies

I'm inclined to agree with your prognosis regarding American jets in MMRCA. Though, IMO that will not connect to the Wikileaks matter, but rather the persistent niggling doubts that the defence establishment has with American attitudes.

A "race" implies the possibility of two different winners. It is not a race and if it was India would already have won. In NO category does Pakistan beat or even MATCH India (defence spending, manpower, sqd strength, surface fleet, ACC, modernisation, future growth etc) the whole arms race idea is a joke aimed at trying to provoke outside sympathy which you LOST along time ago.

I mean could PAF even afford a SINGLE C-17? and India is looking to buy 25+ the most of ANY country other than the US.

Now your "allies" are arming India!

. . .
Looking at current recession and inflation, arms race is suicide for india. :cheesy:

Again, do you know what is the current economic scenario in India. Can you check our GDP figures, compare the same to yours? Have a quick look at inflation in China and then touch base.

Yes SARAS is meant for personnel transport or private jet. We are late due to crash of a prototype and than a lengthy investigation process that is not new for us. It will get certification by end of 2013.

Saras back from the brink again as NAL targets 2013 certification

After a break of two years, Bangalore's National Aerospace Laboratories has resumed development of its Saras 14-seat multi-role transport aircraft following production authorisation approval by India's civil aviation authority.
The Saras programme has been hampered for more than two decades by a host of setbacks including political, technical and design issues. The latest delay came in 2009 when the second prototype of the twin-engined, push-prop aircraft crashed outside Bangalore, killing all three crew members.
NAL director Alevoor Upadhya says the company will press ahead with development of modified prototype. The first prototype will be upgraded to meet the latest design criteria including higher-thrust 1,200hp (895kW) Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-67A engines and improvements to the flight control and flight operations systems.
A first flight is scheduled for August, says Upadhya, adding that NAL is working in parallel to reduce the weight of the first production aircraft by around 500kg (1,100lb) through the "extensive use of composites and by fine-tuning the structural design and optimising some of the on-board systems".
This aircraft is due to make its first flight by the end of 2011 leading to certification and first deliveries in 2013 and 2014 respectively.
Saras is targeted at regional airlines, charter, corporate and air ambulance operators as well as border control, surveillance and aerial survey providers.

No ToTs on products bought through FMS. And saras can carry like 15 people. C17 more than 10 times that amount. If anything Saras is a replacement for the dorniers

You're joking right? Recession? Where? What? And in what universe does an arms purchase cause inflation? In fact if we were to release all this money into the economy that would cause an excess of credit which would lead to inflation. So stop commenting on things you know nothing about

Its good news for indian air force. we desperately require C-17s.

The IL-76 is a fuel guzzler and its operating costs are increasing day by day. it wd be better if some of the work load can be shared by C-17. Also C-17 is a much better aircraft then IL-76. its max payload is 77.5 tonnes where as for IL-76 it is only around 40 tonnes. Also the serviceability of IL-76 isnt too great.

The air force has taken a wise decision in this regard.
