The Maldivian Democracy Network (MDN), on Friday, condemned the actions of those who discriminate between Maldivians and expatriate workers, denying them the right to obtain bottled water.

MDN, a non-governmental organization which promotes human rights and democracy in Maldives, issued a statement as the capital, Male’ City struggles with day two of the Male’ Water Crisis.

MDN, in their statement, noted that each and every human being had the right to clean water and expressed concern over the increasing incidents where expatriate workers were being denied the right to obtain bottled water being distributed in the capital. Expatriates were seen being harassed and pushed out of line by some Maldivians as they waited in ques outside water distribution outlets.

The organization also expressed concern that many households had not received any water during the one hour period the water plants still in operation had been switched on, and called out for relevant authorities to do everything possible, in a speed that was acceptable, to provide relief to the citizens of the capital.

Male’ houses over one third of the total population of the country. Over 100,000 people – both Maldivian and foreign are suffering from the water crisis.

A fire which broke out in Generator Unit of Male' Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) – the country’s sole water treatment company on Thursday afternoon has resulted in the water being shut off in the entire capital city.

Most household depend solely on the water supplied from the company for drinking water, bathing, and cooking.

I'm not kidding when I say there are hundreds of these. Go to twitter and see for yourselves.

Big slap to those who keep on chiding " Hegemonic " India ....

Thanks a lot for posting ....

We must extend all help to our nieghbours in their hour of crisis

Including ..Pakistan

and india has always done that .

that is what defines us ...no matter what few narrow- minded people would say ...

best option for what? they cant have good relations with everyone? is india making them choose?

No india is making case for itself .
India has proved that it is a good and reliable neighbor who will not turn face away in time of crisis .

Despite Maldives rebuke to India by annulling GMR agreement ...India acted in mature way .

and Maldivians will understand the truth .

Just tried doing some back of the envelope calculations - the news stories are saying Male has 100,000 people left without water. Assuming just drinking water (2 litres per person per day), we are talking about 200 tons/day of water. For other needs, water requirement will be much higher.

I think the crisis may be mitigated by December 7, when INS Deepak reaches Male with 800 tons of water (as per PIB).

INS Deepak with 800 Tons Fresh Water to Reach Male on 07 Dec 2014
INS Sukanya reached Male Friday evening (05 Dec 2014) and transferred around 25 Tons of fresh water to water tankers and sintex tanks positioned on the jetty by the Maldivian authorities. Thereafter the ship moved to anchorage and produced another 15 tons of fresh water during the day i.e. today 06 Dec 14. This fresh water would be transferred ashore by water barges arranged by Maldivian authorities and subsequently to water tankers etc on the jetty.

INS Sukanya, an offshore patrol vessel, on a routine patrol off Kochi was diverted to reach Male at the earliest to render necessary assistance and all the possible help to Maldivian authorities. The ship has has two Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants onboard which have a capacity of producing 20 tonnes of fresh water per day.

Another Indian Naval tanker INS Deepak, which was sailed from Mumbai on 05 Dec 2014 with 800 Tons of fresh water is scheduled to reach Male by noon tomorrow (07 Dec 14). She would also transfer the fresh water on to the water barges at anchorage. The ship is capable of producing 100 Tons of fresh water by the Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants fitted on board.

It may be recalled that a major fire broke out at the Male Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) generator control panel on 04 Dec 14, causing extensive damage to the cabling of the generator to the Distillation plants and disconnection of water supply.
