IAF commandos ditch cop after Maoist fire

Top CRPF and Chhattisgarh police officials have questioned the conduct of six IAF personnel who left a wounded police man in a chopper after it crash landed, and chose to return safely to a camp on Friday. The incident took place in Sukma district, when Maoists fired at the MI-17 chopper. The state police wireless operator was hit by bullets during the encounter with Maoists.

Senior officials in the state police and the CRPF, not ready to be identified, said the incident has made them skeptical of IAF personnel’s conduct as six of them, including a couple of commandos having LMGs, left an injured state police radio operator behind and, instead, tried to secure themselves first which is against the very ethos of the forces.

However, Chhattisgarh DGP Ram Niwas told DNA over phone that whatever decision the IAF personnel took must have been taken in good faith as it was taken on the spot, where situation is often different from what is reported or perceived by others not present there. “We appreciate their (IAF personnel) job. Based on their information we launched an operation and managed to rescue our man,” he said.

After unofficially denying charges of leaving behind an injured policeman, the IAF finally responded officially on Saturday evening. IAF spokesperson Sqdn Leader Priya Joshi, in an emailed statement, said that on approaching the area of evacuation, the helicopter descended to land when it was fired upon, resulting in extensive damage to the helicopter and injury to a “CRPF personnel”, radio operator present on board.

It furtherZ said that after successfully landing the helicopter, the crew assessed the threat situation and condition of the “injured CRPF Jawan” and decided to seek immediate medical help for the injured personnel who was immobilised and also to secure the helicopter.

“The crew reached the CRPF camp at Chintagufa and informed them of the exact location which was then communicated to the search party (CRPF Cobra Team) helping them reach the location. The CRPF Cobra Team thereafter reached the spot and secured the helicopter. Since the injured CRPF jawan could not be moved due to injuries suffered, he was airlifted in the morning today from Chintalgufa to Jagdalpur and from Jagdalpur to Raipur by a special IAF aircraft,” the statement said adding that an inquiry has been ordered into the incident.

The IAF statement, however, has shocked both the CRPF and state police officials as the injured radio operator was not from the CRPF but the state police.

If its true, its very shameful, the ethos "no man will be left behind", should be applied to all men in uniform, no matter if they are military personal or not.

So what, nothing new. They are just roaming around in forests and jungles, and are running out of ammo, support...etc

Its easy sitting behind a keyboard and question battlefield decisions. Some seem wrong with the hindsight but perfectly normal at the moment .. Take an example of FC men who surrender or get captured by TTP. Every time TTP takes prisoners, they end up without their heads. Still we see instances that in a mass attack on an FC post, some FC men are killed and some are taken prisoners. Why do you think those FC men surrender when they know that in all probability, they will be beheaded...

Because in a kill zone, the hope of delaying the inevitable, however slim is better than getting killed on the spot. Its you and I who can objectively analyze this because we are not there..

Take an example of FC men who surrender or get captured by TTP. Every time TTP takes prisoners, they end up without their heads. Still we see instances that in a mass attack on an FC post, some FC men are killed and some are taken prisoners. Why do you think those FC men surrender when they know that in all probability, they will be beheaded...

Because in a kill zone, the hope of delaying the inevitable, however slim is better than getting killed on the spot. Its you and I who can objectively analyze this because we are not there..

IAF Orders Probe Into Naxal Attack Incident

A probe has been set up by the IAF Friday's incident in which its helicopter came under attack by suspected Naxalites in the interiors of Chhattisgarh's Sukma district.

One CRPF personnel was injured and the helicopter was damaged in the firing.

A team of technicians has been sent by the IAF to the spot to get back the Mi-17 chopper, which suffered 15 hits in the firing and suffered "extensive damage" in its hydraulic oil and fuel tank, an IAF spokesperson said.

The chopper was attacked after it took off from Jagdalpur to rescue two CRPF personnel and was forced to land in general area of Chintal Gufa and Temalwada in Dantewada district.

On reports that IAF personnel from its security force Garud had left behind the chopper and the injured CRPF personal unguarded, the spokesperson said the injured jawan was immobile due to his injuries and the security team took a decision in the interest of the security of the chopper and the crew.

The IAF in a release issued late in the evening said, "An enquiry has been ordered into the incident."

The force claimed that after landing, the "complete crew then assessed the threat situation and condition of the injured CRPF jawan and decided to seek immediate medical help for him and also to secure the helicopter."

It said after the crew reached the CRPF Camp at Chintalgufa, it informed them of the exact location which was then communicated to the search party (CRPF Cobra Team) helping them reach the location.

The CRPF Cobra Team thereafter reached the spot and secured the helicopter.

The IAF has maintained that the trooper injured in the attack on its aircraft belonged to the CRPF but yesterday Chhattisgarh Police Chief Ramniwas had said that the injured person belonged to the state armed police force CAF.

IAF chopper crash in C’garh: Cobra team rewarded

The home ministry decided to give a reward of Rs. 5 lakh for CRPF’s Cobra commandos who tracked down the helicopter and the injured Chhattisgarh armed police constable left behind by six Indian Air Force personnel after making an emergency landing.

The IAF chopper earlier had to abort its rescue mission after Maoists fired at the craft and injured a state police wireless operator in south Chhattisgarh. The pilot landed about 2-3 km from Chintagufa in south Bastar.

The IAF personnel — armed with LMG and other handheld weapons — left the injured police technician in the chopper in the Maoist heartland. The technician was rescued by Cobra teams.
