India reactivates airstrip in Ladakh - dnaindia.com

Srinagar: Waking up to the Chinese threat, the Indian army bolstered its defences along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) by landing, for the first time, a fixed wing transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF) at the Nyoma airstrip in the Ladakh sector on Friday.

"The landing of the fixed wing aircraft at the Nyoma advanced landing ground (ALG) marks the culmination of joint efforts by the IAF and the Indian Army,'' saidcolonel DK Kachari, ministry of defence spokesman, at the northern command headquarters, addingit would enable both to operate in the inhospitable terrain of Leh-Ladakh region in tandem.

The ALG would ensure that the troops deployed on the LAC get uninterrupted supplies during the harsh winter. Also, it would boost the defence system as troops can now be ferried fast to this LAC during an emergency, he added.

The landing at Nyoma comes 15 months after an AN-32 landed at Daulat-Beg-Oldie (DBO), the highest airfield in the world. The base was established during the Sino-Indian conflict in 1962. However, it was closed in 1966 after an earthquake in the
region.

People in Ladakh have welcomed the commissioning of the ALG in Nyoma saying it will reassure them against any threat.

"This will not only boost the defence systems but also reassure people living in the region against Chinese incursions," said Tsering Dorjay, chief executive councillor of the Leh Autonomous Hill Development Council.

Despite two landmark agreements -- the Peace and Tranquillity Agreement, 1993, and Confidence Building Measures in 1996 -- between India and China to improve bilateral relations, the latter has been violating airspace.

Sir its a great move. IAF opened new airbase just 23km away from china. Its a answer. PLA provoking our army and our IAF provoking PLA and PLAAF. As you know indian army weak. So what IAF saying is if china attack IAF base near china border then IAF would return the favour and join indian army. Am just waiting now to see whether sukhoi-30MKI too would land there or not. AN-32 way bigger size than su-30Mki. More air base going get open as work on infrastructure going at rapid pace.

I wonder if the local ladakhis are getting some sort of paramilitary/volunteer corps training.

It will be beneficial as it will provide an alternative source of income to the locals, as well as co-operating and getting local knowledge and expertise from the ladakhis as well as gearing them up to face combat/guerrilla warfare.

Sir i agree with you. Why only ladakhis? We want even tibet people should be trained. Our neighbours doing it openly. Why shouldn't we? i think ladakhis very good mountain climbers and tibet people are ready to give life. India should trained them as soon as possible sir. It will benefit india.

Allow me to correct you. Opening the air field in Ladakh is no answer to China's military build up in the area. It is simply a means of improving the communications in that desolate place where roads if they exist, remain cut off during the winter months. Improvement of infrastructure in border areas should be a continuous and gradual exercise. However in the case of our nothern borders, nothing happened for 60 years. All we are doing here is trying to make up on the lost time.

The landing of the medium lift AN-32 implies that military (ground) operations can now be supported from the air in that area in case of hostilities with China. Fixed wing aircraft like AN-32 can provide more substantial support as compared to rotary types which were already in use there.

The air field can also be used to bring relief to locals during the winters and natural calamity, that is why they are happy. A major part of the effort of the Army and Airforce in these far flung places with inadequate infrastructure is to support the civillians.

Please dont call the Indian Army weak. It is not weak even by the wildest stretch of imagination. Yes the PLA is much larger in size but that is where its superiority ends.

What exactly is the point of landing Sukhois at Nyoma? Why should any one land an aircraft with a range of 5000 km(without air-air refuelling) just 26 km from the border?

We should avoid getting excited by sensational media coverage. As of now India is merely upgrading its communications in the border areas. Something we should have done many decades ago.

Agreed.

The only "answer" to China that India should be focusing on is to improve infrastructure in the border areas. While the Chinese have highways on their side of the border, we have what can be best described as goat tracks. Embarrassing really.

The lack of railway and road connectivity in these areas is a threat to our sovereignty.

Sir i agree with you totally. But atlast india doing something which is more important. Pace also picked up now. India did sleep long but now its work time. We should not provoke china. They too played it cool and slowly build the infrastructure when india was sleeping. After our infrastructure ready we would be in position to reply their mischifs. Right now china has edge and any reply from india would cost india and china knew that sir.

1. You repeated war rhetoric has become quite annoying now. Same with your habit of "sir sir".

2. GOI had recognized Tibbet as part of China, so stop bringing in Tibbet to discussion on Indo-China.

3. It is good to see your enthusiasm on India's capability in defending its territories. However, request you not to start war mongering at the slightest opportunity if you want yourself to be seen as a serious poster here (and not a war mongering troll like some of the others). Do you seriously want India n china (or any other country) to be engaged in a war like most of your posts suggest?

4. I know there are worst posters/ trolls/ war mongers present in this forum. But I'm saying this to you because one, you are an fellow Indian and two, you seem to be a intelligent block and if you can put your brain in the right path (of peace ofcourse), I'm sure we will be able to read far more intelligent posts from you in the future.

Thank you (and please don't keep on SIR-ing anymore).

Sir did i ever said india should attack china? Am saying do what they do to us. Why are you forcing india to be saint? Better go and advice them instead of india. We are defender and will defend our country. If war starts it wont be by india. It will be by them ok? We have rights to protect our border. We are peaceful country and believes in peace sir. Thank you.
