Below are the Main uses for 60Co:
As a tracer for cobalt in chemical reactions,
Sterilization of medical equipment,
Radiation source for medical radiotherapy,
Radiation source for industrial radiography,
Radioactive source for leveling devices and thickness gauges,
As a radioactive source for food irradiation and blood irradiation, and
As a radioactive source for laboratory use.
Now could anyone please explain me why are we even bringing Nuclear weapons and nuclear safety in the discussion. Practically it is not possible build a bomb out of Cobalt.
Only side-effects can happen from radioactive cobalt in the form of health related issues when exposed for prolonged period to gamma radiations from it. It is foolish to compare this accidental selling of lab instruments with Cobalt in it to Scrap dealers, to nuclear safety or something.
