As much as I love Fareed Zakaria's opinions, I totally disagree with him supporting Walmart's entry in Indian retail sector. India does NOT need to be part of an acronym, India has done better without being a part of that 'group'. It means nothing, just like the fangless SCO. Retail sector does need reform. But that does not mean that we have to allow monopolistic behemoths to gobble up the retail sector in India stifling the domestic retailers. Indian economy thrives on domestic consumerism and everyone knows that. Allow Walmart into India, and you allow Chinese cheap goods through Walmart effectively killing Indian products, unless, Walmart is strictly told to stock and sell only Made in India products. Period.
IMHO, GoI will not succumb to that kind of lobbying. Too much at stake for all the parties concerned in terms of votebank politics.
