The tremendous backlash you talk about is also a myth.

In UP with its caste divides, the backlash was only by the Jats (who I think is 2-5% of the population). The rest of the Hindu community kept out of this and let the Jats fight it out.

UP with 80 Lok sabha seats will continue to send "secular" parties to our Parliament to decide our destiny.

You add Assam, Kashmir, West Bengal and Kerala to that "secular" list and we are truly Fcuked !

The reality is UP has to be won back by the "communal" forces. There is no alternative.

My chat with a couple of posters from UP showed me that the caste factor is a tremendous influence in politics and identity formation. Unless the various casts in UP learn to respect Hinduism and understand the genuine dangers of going the "secular" way a.k.a minority appeasements, they are looking at a dark hole.

One from which, it will be impossible to pull them out from.

West Bengal and Kerala is a classic example. Maybe Assam too ..... but not sure about that.

Vote shares in UP are very close and small shift could translate in big gains.

BJP suffered in UP because upper castes deserted it due to backstabbing done by BJP in late 90's when they aligned with BSP and did not tried to stop anti upper caste pogrom launched by Mayawati even though their being coalition partners.

This has resulted in drift in upper caste vote in UP but it has not remain stably attached to any party as every party has it's primary vote bank due to which upper caste have not got any share in power.This migration was the reason of resounding victory of Mayawati in last and Mulayam in recent assembly election.

If this vote bank returns to BJP, they would get close to 30 seats. Rest would depend upon how much OBC vote they could corner as non-Yadav OBC vote is also in flux and Modi'd candidature along with presence of other OBC leaders in BJP could dent in that vote bank.

Well It would be like that, but i guess better governance and education would help to develop the area and help the people to change their perspective. I might be wrong in my assumption but its worth a try, not under current government but under president rule.

Actually MP has Shivraj Singh, chhattisgarh has Raman singh and Gujarat has Modi. Who does UP have ? Without a strong honest leader UP still remains lost.

How is Rajnath Singh as a person and a leader ? ....... I am not terribly impressed by his character. Is there anymore more genuine ?

Actually Nitish Kumar with his communal bull$hit and Yadav votebank would be good for UP.

There are no leaders in UP BJP. In UP it has become just like congress and whatever cadre it has on ground is due to RSS.

Even if Modi wins because of UP ( if BJP get close to 50 seats there, they could reach close to 200 Mark) they would not be able to hold it for long.

After doing some reading, Uttar Pradesh just seems to be multiple provinces thrown together, hence the original name United Provinces.

It has over 200 million people, by far the most of any state/province in the world. And a standard of living near the bottom of india.

Even our most populous province, Guangdong, has only 100 million people. And the GDP of Guangdong province alone is almost 1 trillion.

Having a relatively poor province with over 200 million people... that is an administrative nightmare. It should be split into several provinces for easier administration.

Addressing basic administration will lay foundation for new leaders to make their mark and will correct the social breakdown of the last 40 odd years. It would be better to split UP into multiple provenience. The alternative is to choose between bad or worse.

I do not have a great understand of UP but my basic understanding of living there for a few months, interacting with people from there and reading up tells me that the society there has degenerated and their value systems has been corrupted.

I do not think any great leadership can arise from such a society. The society first has to regain its value systems and only then a genuine leader will get mass support.

Its a chicken or egg thing. What comes first ...a leader who will reform society or a society that will produce a great leader

Solution may lie if splitting up the state and provide at least some of them a chance to improve their part of the world. The rest can then take inspiration from the one doing better.
