Prime Minister Gordon Brown signs the Book of Condolence at the Chinese Embassy in London
The British tents on way to the quake zone homeless
A further 1 million British pounds injection of British aid for the China earthquake relief operation was announced today, taking the Government's total contribution to 2 million British pounds.
It came as 3,000 British tents arrived in Chengdu to give shelter to some of the many made homeless by the May 12 devastation and as Prime Minister Gordon Brown signed a Book of Condolence in London.
The British Ambassador to China Sir William Ehrman said the first tranche of the British Government money, channelled through the China Association for NGO Co-operation, was already funding the purchase of the tents, along with food, water and medical equipment.
This second tranche will provide a further 5,000 tents and also satellite communications equipment, to the value of another 1 million British pounds.
On top of the British Government's tally British companies are making sizeable donations which have so far amounted to some 2.5 million British pounds. Additionally contributions in kind are also being made by British firms, for example a fleet of 6 excavators and supplies of pharmaceuticals.
The British NGO community is also contributing actively. For example, a Beijing book club sending almost 4 tonnes of aid to Chengdu last weekend.
Sir William today again paid tribute to the rapid and massive response by the Chinese Government, People's Liberation Army and its people and also expressed thanks to those who had located and helped Britons caught up in the disaster. He said: ''The feelings of all of the British Government and people are with the Chinese people at this time.''
