What's new

'I had the honour of flying your brave son'

LOL desperation that is its origin not its meaning today, you said we use martyr from Christians that is incorrect I said the closest interpretation would be the English word martyr but that is not its literal definition.

What an earth, etymology is not desperation!

The etymology of the word "shahid" suggests that it primarily means "witness" and the same word began to be used by Muslims as anhonorific title for Muslim martyrs who died fighting in the way of Islam. Subsequently, and over a period of time, the same word was adopted by non-Muslims in the Middle East and South Asia such as Arab Christians and South Asian Hindus and Sikhs to denote their martyrs.

Interestingly, the English word "martyr" originates from the Greek word "martys", which also means "witness" in the Greek language. Therefore, in both the Arabic and Greek languages, the origin for the word "martyr" is "witness."

I still don't get it why were they fighting gun battle when they could have blown them up . It is really a unnecessary loss. We already have so less officers.

Respect for the Brave man and the Pilot .
Yes, they could have used a rocket launcher and blown the buggers up. But that house belonged to a Kashmiri and would have resulted in collateral damage destroying his house. However if that house belonged to a terrorist or his supporter, it would have been blown to smithereens which I think was the case here.

Shahid does not mean martyr it means witness that is what I am telling you. :cheesy: Martyr itself may have originated from Greek word witness but shahid is just witness.

The only reason Muslims use it as an honorific is because of the connotation behind it without that Islamic connotation it does not make sense lol.

I am tired........

Go to sleep then.

I never said "martyr" is exclusive for religions, I said Shaheed is exclusive for Muslims. While your soldiers fit that former definition for you they do not fit the definition of shaheed.
Words are our slaves, not our masters. Words can change their meanings or adapt to new meanings over time. That is how languages develop. If "asura" means a demonic race in hindu mythology and a godly race in Celtic mythology (despite originating from the same root), if 'sumer' used to mean springtime in middle english and now means summer time in modern english, and almost any word you speak today is a deviation of a pre existing word in the same or another language, why can't we adapt this particular word?

Words get a meaning when a large number of people start using it in that meaning. Languages evolve. Whether you like it or not, the word "shahid" will be used to mean martyr in India for a long time to come, because it has become accepted into large scale already. So get used to it, accept it, deal with it.

Then as long as Indians butcher the meaning Muslim will point it out no biggy.

A concept taken from Christianity I guess. Not surprised :coffee:

In Christianity, a martyr, in accordance with the meaning of the original Greek martys in the New Testament, is one who brings a testimony, usually written or verbal. In particular, the testimony is that of the Christian Gospel, or more generally, the Word of God. A Christian witness is a biblical witness whether or not death follows.[7] However, over time many Christian testimonies were rejected, and the witnesses put to death, and the word martyrdeveloped its present sense. Where death ensues, the witnesses follow the example of Jesusin offering up their lives for truth.

Ok now let us come to an agreement..... We keep using it... and you keep complaining.....Now let us move on to the real topic

To repeat - words are our slaves, not our masters. Adapting is not butchering. Keep pointing it till your voice is hoarse, it won't make a difference. No biggie.

On topic, hope the families of Shaheeds Maj. Varadarajan and Sepoy Vikram Singh find solace.

Nice try.

The word "shahid" originates from the Qur'anic Arabic word meaning "witness", which is used in the context of "those who bear witness." Its application to Muslim martyrs originates from the context of the martyr having died in the way of Islam and, therefore, having become a "witness" to the "Shahada", i.e. "I bear witness that there is no God butAllah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah."

A shahid is one who beared witness that there is God but Allah and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. We apply it as an honorific to Muslims who died in witness to God, simple.

Funny because your previous post says the Arab Christians took it from Muslims now you are trying to say Muslims took it from Christians make up your mind.

Regardless of everything else, any man that lays down his life for his nation is worthy of respect in my eyes. It is always the patriotic people laying down their lives while being used by spineless politicians.

Respect to this soldier.

My respect for Amma increased a bit, you guys know if Major was from UP or Bihar, those sobs Mulayam and Nitish wouldn't have had the guts to say something like that. Its heros like these who deserve the honor of being called son/daughter of the state, not some some alleged suicide bomber and terrorist killed in encounter.

To that idiot Azam Khan -

They were not Hindus or Muslims who were martyred. They were brave Indian soldiers who gave their lives for your tomorrow!!

And how is it any different from the concept Martyr/Martys of the New Testament which mind you predates the Quran:o:
