I am unable to help: Sushma Swaraj
NEW DELHI: A day after seeking report from the Odisha government on the trial of an Iranian woman by a local state court, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Saturday said that she is "unable to help".

"I have received the report from Government of Odisha. The trial court has convicted Narges K Ashtari to one year imprisonment and Rs 3,00,000 fine. She has filed an appeal before Sessions Court which is pending. The appellate court has released her on bail pending appeal," the minister tweeted.

"This is a judicial order and the matter is sub judice. Therefore, I am unable to help in this case," She added.
Narges Ashtari, who is was Iranian by birth and British by nationalisation, associated with an NGO Prishan Foundation, has been stranded in India since her passport expired.

Narges was granted an employment visa through a local NGO of Rayagada called ASSIST (Asia Society for Social Improvement and Sustainable Transformation). However in 2011, Narges established her own organisation Prishan Foundation in Rayagada, an orphanage home for girls in the Rayagada district in Odisha.
In 2014, while on a one-day field trip of the orphanage home, where Narges ended up paying most of the expenses out of her own pocket, her father's pension, one of the blind children fell into a river and was swept away.

Although the child's parents, who both worked for the school at the time, had accompanied their son on the excursion, greed and pressure by ASSIST made them lodge a complaint against Narges, accusing her of throwing their child in the river and murdering.

. .
NGO.

Had she not been associated with one, I would have had felt bad for her. Not now.

.
what she is convicted for?? If NGO is at fault, it should be banned ..

That woman should haul a*s ASAP, she is lucky she wasn't assaulted physically.

She has to be out of her freaking mind to venture out on her own. She probably is a bit on the loony side, high on helping people, low on the common sense

According to the public prosecutor, Sachidanand Khardanga, Ashtari and her associates took six children bathing in the Nagabli River where they were accidentally washed away. He says five were rescued except for Aseem Jilakara, who could not be found. The prosecution says there was a strong current in the river that day and blames Ashtari for organizing the picnic in that area. The parents of the young child were also by the river, but Khardanga said the head of the foundation should be held responsible for Jilakara’s death and alleges it was negligence on Ashtari’s part.

Ashtari denies these claims and said there is “absolutely no evidence whatsoever, there was no proper investigation, and no body found.” She alleges the parents pressed ahead with a charge of manslaughter because she refused to pay a bribe to them and the local police. The defence counsel says the child was not an orphan under the care of the Prishan Foundation and that his parents should be held responsible.

The parents and a relative of the child presumed drowned testified in court, claiming they saw Ashtari and some of her colleagues forcibly bathe some of the children in the river. The father, Peter Jilakara, says he jumped into the river to rescue his boy.

Other court witnesses do not support those allegations. One of those witnesses, Rajesh Kadraka, testified that Ashtari had “no involvement” in the alleged incident. The judge declared Kadraka and those other witnesses as ‘hostile’ and concluded that “nothing substantial could be elicited from them.”

According to court documents obtained by Global News, there were some ‘discrepancies’ and ‘exaggerations’ on the part of the parents. However, the court concluded that since the parents are from a rural area, “exaggerations are bound to occur in such truthful witnesses.”

Ashtari believes she is the victim of a corruption scandal.

A few months prior to being accused of manslaughter, Ashtari was working with a non-governmental agency and began questioning its business tactics. She says she exposed that organization and some of its members and claims those people ended up in jail based on evidence she uncovered. She alleges the parents of the child at the centre of this case were bribed

The kind of mentality some people are having here just bewilders me. Seeing their hate, it just boils down the fact that they are not human being anymore. Woman comes to India to work and earn, finds herself in trouble, should have approached concerned authorities directly without any delay. Now her employers are after her that means only two things either she is true and withc hunting is being done against her or she has ribbed her employers. I am no aware of what actually happened there, so I will not pass the judgement. Now she is under courts jurisdiction, let them work and get the facts on the ground to reach a conclusion.
Off topic :- @fallstuff a friendly advice, don't play hate too much that it's gets you. She is there in India, Indian court is checking everything then only conclusive opinion will be given along with verdict. And last but not the least I being a Indian as well as human being have posted the thread for health discussion, not for your rambling. Hope you get my massage.

She was there to help orphan kids in India yet some ungrateful and corrupt locals joined hands and accused her of manslaughter to make some money which we in Iran found really appalling.
Fortunately, the FM of India has promised to cooperate with Iranian embassy to find ways for immediate release of this humanitarian advocate.

I also believe that if FM says this there must be some truth behind the incident, hopefully all evidence is placed in front of law & order to secure her. And not only that all real culprits should be punished severeliy to make a fitting example.
