While everybody knows about the famous German U Boats. The Japanese I- Series boats remain neglected. This is an extract taken from a rare book on I-Series Subs of Imperial Japanese Navy. I hope you guys will like it. I have the complete book. Do let me know if you want to read more.

yeap, i have read about this beast earlier.
sadly, they were not used to there potential as the saw limited time in action being built around 1944-1945 and soon after, Japan surrendered. 2 were captured by Americans after the surrender and a third one was concerted into a tanker.

there biggest mission would have been an attack on Panama canal to cut and disturb American supplier but this never happened as Japan was nuked!

as per sources, the Americans never knew about there existence and when captured, they were astonished by there massive size. these were designed to travel anywhere in world and come back to home!

actually five boats were built but only three were launched and latter the remaining two were canceled after the war was over.

here is the article from where i came to know about these after reading in a book about there existence:

The Japanese built five (three were launched) giant, seaplane carrying submarines. One made a trip around the Horn of Africa to Germany. Another was converted as a tanker. A submarine fleet was formed intending its aircraft to torpedo the Gatun Locks, Panama Canal, but was diverted to attack the US anchorage at Ulithi just as the war ended. The I-400 series submarine had an energy absorbing skin, snorkel, radar, degaussing, and a range of 1-1/2 times around the world and four months duration.

AT SEA
Two submarines hulls were welded together with a waterproof compartment on deck for three disassembled torpedo bombers.

some similar platforms were built by other nations as well.

just for your reference:
FRANCE:French submarine Surcouf

carried one airplane, a Besson MB.411 float plane. it was sunk by friendly fire.
French submarine Surcouf (N N 3) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

ITALY: Regia Marina
proto type boat was made in 1920s but never entered production since the program was canceled.

UK: HMS M2
it was a modified M-Class submarine, the M-Class submarines were designed to carry heavy guns and one example was fitted with water proff tanks to launch and recover aircraft. this was destroyed in 1932 and the program was canceled.

US: USS S-1 (SS-105)
the US efforts were also confined to proto type building, two examples with different modification were made but the program was canceled after the UK loss of boat.

so france and Japan were the only nation to have operations Submarine Aircraft carrier boats.

this is an interesting concept, i hope you find this useful.

Very interesting... japanese thinking many are lucky that the japan of the past is still not in power .

Well the concept of manned aircraft seems a bit outdated since you have missile carrying submarines which can carry both nuclear and tactical missiles.

This concept it making a comeback with UAVs

Indeed Rython and Germans are testing this, infact, having a long endurance, small tactical UAV would enhance the survivability of Sub manifold as the sub is virtually blind from above surface threats when running silently, deep under the sea.

Indeed Rython and Germans are testing this, infact, having a long endurance, small tactical UAV would enhance the survivability of Sub manifold as the sub is virtually blind from above surface threats when running silently, deep under the sea.

yes, its part of future weapons and modren military developments. a most common example is of the Rython tested submarine launched UAV:

America has gone one better than Germany in the race to develop the world's most powerful submarine-launched robot aircraft. US arms giant Raytheon has announced a model which can be deployed at depth without modification to the submarine.

The new U-UAV is dubbed SOTHOC, for Submarine Over the Horizon Organic Capabilities. The launch system works by deploying a sealed can through the sub's waste disposal lock. The can then sinks away safely to get clear of the boat. On reaching a preset depth it dumps weight to become positively buoyant and ascends to the surface. Once stable at the surface, it aligns itself into wind and launches a one-shot, disposable UAV.

The UAV would normally fly its mission autonomously, avoiding the need for the mother sub to show any communications masts. If the sub was to directly receive any data gathered, it would need to put up a mast within range of an eventual download transmission, however.

Raytheon have now tested SOTHOC successfully at Rhode Island's Narragansett Bay test range, but thus far only by dropping it in the sea from a surface vessel.

"In future demonstrations, we will deploy a UAS from an actual submerged submarine," promised Ken Pedersen, Raytheon advanced projects veep.

"This capability will be a keystone for real-time situational awareness at significantly increased ranges," said Mark Rodrigues of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center.

While a fully submerged sub is extremely hard to detect, the very water which hides it also cuts it off almost completely from any real idea what's happening above the waves. It's quite hard even to relay data from other units - while a sub can receive special very-long-wave radio under water, the bandwidth is limited.

A SOTHOC or mast-launched German VOLANS could act in effect as a flying untethered periscope, able to gather a lot more information than a sea-level mast and without the need for so much exposure by the submarine.

This sort of thing could be especially useful for subs like the US Navy's SSGN special-forces motherships, intended to act mainly as bases for operations ashore.

SSGNs might, in fact, use something bigger and more sophisticated than SOTHOC - being converted nuclear-missile boats, they have lots of sizeable launch tubes already designed for launching large air vehicles. But SOTHOC will no doubt carve a niche, as just about any sub could use it without modification. ®
