U.S. military successfully tested a new hypersonic missile

On Thursday, the U.S. military successfully tested a new hypersonic missile. The missile flies at eight times the speed of sound with a range measured in the thousands of miles. That allows the missile to hit a target anywhere on earth in less than an hour.

COIMBATORE: With the air-version of BrahMos missile likely to be inducted in IAF within a year,works have already been started to develop BrahMos 2, the fastest Hypersonic missile in the world, which would take final shape in five years, a top scientist said.

It is possible, the only problem will be maneuvering the missile after its launched. The five year window seems like a good enough time period.

Nope..with Russia..It was already gone for some lab tests..The test was conducted at the Hyderabad-based Advanced Systems Laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) which has developed the missile through a joint venture with Russia's NPO organisation.

I think OP want to talk about Hypersonic Cruise Missiles..Shaurya is indeed a Hypersonic Missile but its a Quasi ballistic one.

yes its very much possible as we are working in this area for years.

For a moment forget about BrahMos 2 Hypersonic Missile (Its a India-Russia JV) India is developing 2 of its own Hypersonic Cruise Missile one with the range of 600 kms other with 1500 kms.

Nirbhay = 1000 kms NUCLEAR WARHEAD sub-sonic cruise missile

LRCM = 600 kms NUCLEAR WARHEAD super/hyper sonic cruise missile (Air to land attack, surface-surface etc.)

IISc, defence agencies work on recoverable hypersonic missiles

BANGALORE: Scientists at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), along with Indian defence agencies, are developing technology to build recoverable hypersonic missiles which will be half the size of the current missiles.
These missiles will have the potential of hitting a target over 5,000 km away at more than five times the speed of sound (Mach 5) and can also be used to launch satellites at low cost, a top scientist working on the project told ET.

No time frame has been announced as yet on when the missile work will be completed. This is of special significance as institutions like Nasa is experimenting on unmanned projects where they will use hypersonic flights to conduct space exploration.

Missiles which fly at Mach 3-4 (three to four times the speed of sound) belong to the high supersonic class, while hypersonic missiles can fly at more than Mach 5. India's longest-range missile, Agni III, is capable of hitting targets 3,500 km away and the forthcoming Agni V which has a range of about 5,000-6,000 km is expected to be test-fired in 2010.

The missile will be much smaller than the current ones. It will be more like an aircraft which can come back to its base after dropping the weapon and need not be huge like the Chinese Dongfeng intercontinental ballistic missile,"[/COLOR] a scientist who did not wish to be quoted said. "This technology is not yet available in any other country and it will help better access to space, reconnaissance-strike and global reach."

IISc is working on some parts of this intercontinental ballistic missile which will be made of materials like composites and Titanium.
