Hydro electric potential of Pakistan

What is the current peak consumption of electricity in Pakistan? Last time I checked, a couple of years back , it was 18000 MW.
Firstly Peak consumption would be in GWh not in MW or GW. Secondly there will two scenarios for consumption, one is average daily demand and other is peak daily demand. I can tell you average daily demand based on power purchase data roughly excluding load shedding hours and energy produced privately. You have to dig deeper to get the data for peak daily consumption but I'm afraid no one would have that data because we resort to load shedding during our peak consumption hours so you would get only estimates.

The graph below shows the total California load profile for a hot day in 1999
elec_load_demand.gif

For the month of January nepra purchased from a number of sources total sum of 6913.8 GWh electricity worth 46.6 Billion Rs. So the average daily demand met through national grid (minus load shedding hours) is roughly 223 GWh for the month of January, 2017. If we assume uniform 6 hrs load shedding throughout the country than the shortfall is roughly 56 GWh daily.

Thanks for the clarification. The daily demand is surely to rise in the coming months. Any idea about the completion dates of the projects mentioned in post #6?

Zia sb,

Pakistan should be careful about building new projects on rivers which are essentially fed by Karakoram glaciers- they are receding and the useful life of such projects maybe lower than anticipated. Better to focus on Jhelum, Chenab and Kabul river based projects.

point taken but you should also understand why future wars would be fought on water resources.

Kohala

Feasibility done many times.

There are many more opportunities dosn streams in our rivers and kanals. Govt should start working on new projects

.
we talked about on channel storage
there are also off channel storage option meaning, taking water through barrage and saving it on site off the river bed.
Remember there are numerous unidentified sites, these are identified with preliminary studies done back in 1980s

AAEAAQAAAAAAAAJRAAAAJGVjZDIxZjkzLTU1MWQtNGNhOS04NzliLTNmMTE3NmI2NDUwYg.jpg

Those off channel sites include
ON INDUS:
1. sanjwal Dam 3.6 MAF sister projects of akhori which is also majorly an off channel storage htough it would stor river Haro water
2. Bahatar Dam 0.8 MAF
3. Dhok pathan Dam 8.5 MAF, this dam unfortunately is becoming less feasible dam by dam because of poor planning, current motor way will be submersed and huge population along it
4. On Jehlum river
Rohtas Dam 5.75 MAF

.
Chiniot dam 69MW and most importantly will store 1 MAF water and help prevent floods on Chenab.

Wapda set for feasibility study into Chiniot Dam project

LAHORE: The Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) will arrange part payment and conduct a feasibility study for the much-needed Chiniot Dam project that would mitigate floods in Chenab River in addition to water storage for crops and low-cost hydel electricity generation, an official said on Monday.
“Wapda has decided to arrange Rs86.7 million from its own resources, besides Rs50 million to be provided by the federal government for the study,” spokesman at the utility said.

“The future water requirements for the industry, likely to be set up in the region in the wake of the discovery of iron, copper and gold reserves in Chiniot, have also increased significance of the project.”
The Central Development Working Party (CDWP) in the Planning Commission of Pakistan recently approved PC-II of the Chiniot Dam for conducting feasibility study of the project at a cost of Rs136.724 million.
The CDWP, while approving the PC-II, said the government would finance up to Rs50 million, while Wapda would have to arrange the remaining amount from its own resources to conduct the study.

In view of its importance, Wapda agreed to the proposal and decided to start the study as early as possible.
“The feasibility study is expected to be completed in one-and-a-half years,” the spokesman added.
After completion of the feasibility study and preparation of detailed engineering design, the Chiniot Dam could be constructed in four years time.

The Punjab plain, due to simple topography, has very little storage sites for the flood water. Besides other sites, the only storage site available on River Jhelum had already been developed by constructing Mangla Dam, which has proven its worth, time and again, to control floods in River Jhelum since its completion in 1967.
River Chenab presents the only site five-kilometre upstream of Chiniot city, which can help store one million acres feet of water and generate 69 megawatts hydel electricity.
The main objectives of the Chiniot Dam include water storage, regulation of existing downstream canal network, power generation and most importantly flood mitigation.

The devastating flood in rivers Jhelum and Chenab played havoc across Punjab in 2014.
Though the raised Mangla Dam absorbed high flows of River Jhelum, there was no such dam at River Chenab. This situation necessitates construction of Chiniot Dam on River Chenab without delay.
The dam will also help meet water requirements of the industry, which is expected to flourish in the suburbs of Chiniot consequent to historic discovery of iron, copper and gold mines in the area.

CHINIOT DAM PROJECT
this project was identified very recently after devastating floods on chenab river which is not regulated at all unlike indus and jehlum

The dam site is located about 176 km downstream Marala Headworks and about 5 km from the Chiniot City and approximately 100 meter up stream of existing
Railway Bridge on Chenab River.

Its time federal govt and provincial govt owe their responsibility
after getting 50% from NFC, provincial gov t should not cry on their finances , as this is enough money for their other expenses

Federal govt should atleast spend 10-20% pf PSDP on dams
infact chinot dam cost can be covered within 1 year if govt closes steal mills(costing 3 billion per month), it will give jobs but productive jobs rather free feeding million of rupees for board of directors of project that is non functional since supreme court stopped it privatization

. .
Lessons learned from these floods

Float international bonds take more loans but please start building simulataneously two more dams that are ready to build

I.e Kalabagh and akhori(feasbility already done)

Both dams will not help people of KP but will greatly help people of sindh

Taliban officials, Russia near energy deal

KABUL: The Taliban administration is in the final stages of talks in Moscow over the terms of a contract for Afghanistan to purchase gasoline and benzene from Russia, Afghan commerce ministry officials told Reuters.
Habiburahman Habib, the spokesperson for Afghanistan’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry, confirmed that an official delegation chaired by the commerce ministry was in the Russian capital and finalising contracts for supplies of wheat, gas and oil.
“They are in negotiation with the Russian side,” he said in a message to Reuters, adding that they would share details once the contracts were complete.
A source from the office of the Minister of Commerce and Industry told Reuters technical officials from his ministry and the ministry of finance had stayed in Moscow to work on the contracts after a ministerial delegation visited this month.
Afghan commerce ministry source says they are working on text of the contract
“We are working on text of contract, (we have) almost agreed on gasoline and benzene,” said the official, adding they expected it to be finished soon.
Spokespeople at Russia’s foreign and energy ministries did not respond to requests for comment.
The contracts come after a Taliban delegation, led by the acting commerce minister, visited Russia in the mid of August to hold talks on trade, while the United States tries to convince other nations to cut down on use of Russian oil.
If completed, the contract with Russia would be a sign of foreign countries increasingly doing business with the Taliban, despite its administration not being officially recognised by any international government since it regained control of the country a year ago.
Both Russia and Taliban-led Afghanistan face economic sanctions from international governments, including the United States.
No foreign government, including Moscow, formally recognises the Taliban administration and Afghanistan’s banks have been hampered by the sanctions which have left most international banks unwilling to carry out transactions with Afghan banks.
The official source said they had a plan for how payments would be made but declined to provide details on whether official banking channels would be used.
Despite Afghanistan’s central bank assets being frozen, its banking sector hampered by sanctions, and a lack of formal recognition from abroad, some countries are doing business with Kabul, helping it access global markets amid a domestic economic crisis.
Pakistan is receiving thousands of tonnes of coal from Afghanistan a day, which the former has welcomed to ease its energy crisis. Transactions are carried out by private businesses in each country, and the Taliban administration collects duties on the coal exports.
