Humour or racism?

. . . .

The Urdu poet is ridiculing Pashtuns on PTV, the mushaira was aired five days ago. He is calling them uncouth and dumb, smugglers, "bey-sura", unclean and stinky, Naswari etc. May be i have no sense of humour or i am not familiar with depth of poetry. So help me in this regard, is it humour or racism?
the protest was fruitful and the poet has been banned on ptv for lifetime while inquiry against the PTV staff has been ordered today by information ministerm

Whats causing bad blood between Afghans and Urdu speakers in Pakistan ?

Racism from Afghan/Pushtun side mostly but can't deny there are idiot racists in Urdu Speaking community either. Urdu Speakers and Pushtuns have some stereotypes of each other. Pusthuns generally view Urdu Speakers as former Hindus, weak and dark skinned. Urdu Speakers in response view Pushtuns as uncivilised, loud, terrorist and bachay baaz(pedos). People need to grow a thicker skin, there will always be rude idiots who despise people based on their culture, religion or skin colour.

Marriyum imposes life ban on poet who ridiculed Pushtun community

PESHAWAR: Minister of State for Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage, Marriyum Auranzeb has taken serious notice of a programme aired by PTV in which a poet ridiculed and stigmatized the Pushtun community, imposing a life time ban on the participation of the concerned poet in any programme of the official channel.

The minister also directed the secretary information, who is also the managing director of PTV, to submit a report about the incident after holding an inquiry against the PTV officials who were responsible for the regrettable episode.

Earlier, Federal Secretary Information and Broadcasting Sardar Ahmad Nawaz Sukhera also took notice of the controversial poetic programme and sought apology from Pashtuns over hurting of their sentiments, because of the stigmatisation of their race by the poetconcerned.

The federal secretary said PTV, being a national institution of the country, is following a very strict and impartial editorial policy, which does not allow stigmatization, profiling or stereotyping of any individual, caste or community.

He also held out assurance of taking strict action against PTV officials who were found responsible for airing of the controversial programme.

Lol i have always noticed that its only urdu speaking people from Sindh make jokes of pathans. I have many Urdu speaking friends and they always joke about pathans being Pedos, Ganja smokers, uncivilised and "gutter chaap"(thats an indian word). While punjabis always give respect to Pathans.

Whats causing bad blood between Afghans and Urdu speakers in Pakistan ?

In 70's, 80's large numbers of pashtuns migrated to Karachi, afghanis included. Then criminal gangs from both communities used to fight each other. One day in 1986 some muhajir girl was killed by bus driver in accident and riots broke out between muhajirs and pathans. Later on it was it was found out that driver was not pathan but punjabi but too late by that time.

Riots and target killings continued from time to time till 2014 when Karachi operation was started. Now Karachi is peaceful and next generation will wonder why they used to fight in the first place.

Basically what happened is lack of rule of law in Karachi allowed crimnals from both sides to create bad blood between communities.

That exactly what happened....though a Mohajir would tell you that their beef with Pashtuns is since Ayub Khan times. It appears that Ayub Khan encouraged settlement of large number of Pashtuns in Karachi to counter-balance the absolute dominance of Mohajirs in the city who were at odds with him and had supported Fatima Jinnah. The first Mohajir-Pashtun riot broke out when Mohajirs attacked rally of Gohar Ayub Khan who was celebrating win of his father over Fatima Jinnah. Mohajirs did not like the arrival of Pashtuns to the city. My study says that there were Pashtuns, but big chunk of them were actually Hazarawals who were staunch supporters of Ayub Khan. Mohajirs called them Pathans nonetheless. Hazarewals were getting killed as many as Pashtuns in target killings at the hands of MQM in recent years, they were put in the category of Pathans. The 80s anti-Pashtun riots were also started (this time led and organized by Altaf Hussain and co) to oppose the change of demographics of the city due to arrival of Afghan refugees and Pashtun economic migrants. While the 60s and 70s riots were spontaneous, the riots in 80s against Sindhis and Pashtuns led by MQM were intentional and planned. MQM fueled anti-Pashtun , anti-Sindhi and anti-Punjabi sentiments to rally Mohajirs around them. Pashtuns were responding in tit for tat so they are detested the most out of all. The arrival of Biharis from Bangladesh, , many of whom were trained in combat, benefited MQM. The spread of AK47 all over Pakistan, a side effect of Afghan Jihad, also made the riots bloodier as both sides easily acquired it.

So this bad blood between Mohajirs and Pashtuns is rooted in politics. As they do not have their own province and are mostly confined to a city, still carry the label of "Mohajir", so they are quite edgy about arrivals of people from other provinces to Karachi but they cant do any thing about it as the cities belongs to Sindh province. The unfair Quote system of Bhutto also angered them. MQM cashed on these sentiments and made the Karachi a hell-hole. A big difference and change has been observed ever since the city is cleansed from MQM.

In my opinion MQM was the main culprit. They were burning the buses of Pashtuns and promoting racism against them, and their was big motive behind that. MQM was behind spreading Pathan jokes through sms (a cell was caught in Karachi where daily 500 sms were sent , replacing word sardar with Pathan). They turned the dead Ahmad Faraz into a joke, assuming him to be a Pathan even though he was a Hindkowan from Kohat city. Things will get better as MQM has been uprooted but not overnight as we are talking about decades of riots and hostilities.
