Afghan officials say the blast was planted by the Taliban
At least 22 people have been killed and many wounded when a roadside bomb hit a crowded minibus in the Afghan province of Herat, officials say.

Officials said the bus was full and women and children were among the casualties.

It was travelling from Obe district to the provincial capital, which recently passed to the control of Afghan forces.

Earlier on Thursday, a suicide attack at a US-run base in eastern Paktia province killed two Afghan guards.

"It was a big, powerful blast," the Associated Press news agency quoted Abdul Bashir, a village elder, as saying.

"Among the dead are men, women and children. The bodies are not easily recognisable."

The bus was on its way to a market where the passengers were going to shop, the agency quoted Mohyuddin Noori, a spokesman for the province's governor, as saying.

Afghan officials said the roadside bomb in Herat was planted by the Taliban.

Last December, 14 people were killed when a bus hit an explosive planted in the same area.

Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) are widely used by insurgents. Their intended targets are Afghan or international security forces but because they are left unsupervised and activated by a pressure plate, civilian vehicles often detonate the explosives.

IEDs are to blame for the majority of civilian deaths in Afghanistan.

Even in today's papers, there is no mention of US casualties except the above incident.

what were "civilian" women and children doing at the ISAF/USA military base entrance?

I think there are 2 separate incidents, the majority of dead were women and kids, their bus was blown up by roadside bomb, but off course we are not surprised to see the taliban decline responsibility for that attack as they usually deny when there is large number of civilians killed by them, on the other hand they accept the responsibility on the military place which only killed 2 guards.

It is always better to wait for a news to get confirmed by large number of sources worldwide before jumping to silly conclusions.

Bringing down a US chopper is much easier then fighting US army in its military base. Not a single major US military base in Afghanistan has fallen to resistance forces thus far. Do the math.

And inflicting casualties on US forces is not easy. In 10 years of fighting; less then 2000 US soldiers died in Afghanistan. Pathetic.

At least, Iraqi resistance managed to kill near 5000 US soldiers.

The lack of progress in Afghanistan is due to policies of Obama administration. He is not interested in destroying Taliban. US has the military capability to end this war in its favor, however the decisions of US leadership will determine the outcome.

When did the western press admitted that American casualties are under-reported? The fact is that western press enjoys much greater freedom in current times then it did in past times. Nothing remains hidden for long now. War On Terror has recieved greatest media coverage in the history of mankind to date.

Vietnam war was an entirely different kind of conflict, fought in a very different territory, and with technology which is largely ancient by modern standards. Not a valid comparison.
